The two eyes of a person, when the sun sets in the west, gradually lose vision. This also belongs to internal eye disorders (Nei Zhang), commonly known as "chicken cataract" (Ji Meng Yan). This condition is caused by Kidney deficiency. Although the eyes are classified as orifices, their root control lies with the Kidneys. When the Kidneys are deficient, the eyes become dim. If one indulges in lust, excessive alcohol consumption, and sexual activity, it causes the Kidneys to become weak and exhausted. The innate endowment of true Qi is incomplete, leading to a shortage of spirit and essence. Consequently, the Shen Shui (Divine Water, referring to the aqueous humor governed by Kidney water) within the pupil becomes turbid, resulting in a lack of luster in the eyes. Treatment requires methods to restore vision and tonify the Kidneys. One must assess the patient's age, constitution, and excess or deficiency patterns, carefully selecting herbal decoctions to balance the body, using diet for supplementation, abstaining from sexual desire, and controlling anger, so that the water at Huiyin naturally becomes clear.
Huanshen Bushen Wan (Restore Essence and Tonify Kidney Pill): Treats internal eye disorders (for the detailed formula, see the section on "Vision Obscured with Flowers").
Bushen Mingmu Wan (Tonify Kidney and Brighten Eyes Pill): Treats various internal eye disorders, aiming to prevent progression into the Five Wind internal disorders and to improve unclear vision.

Dryness and deficiency of the pupil also belong to internal eye disorders and are unrelated to external eye disorders (Wai Zhang). However, because it arises from headache, it is listed under the external disorder section. According to this syndrome, it is caused by inability to sleep at night. The Hun (Ethereal Soul) stored in the Liver and the Po (Corporeal Soul) stored in the Lungs become unsettled; the spirit is unstable, and there is little sleep, leading to labor injury of the Liver. Thus, the Jin Jing (Golden Well, referring to the pupil) becomes irregular, with edges resembling saw teeth, uneven and jagged. Over time, it gradually shrinks, vision becomes blurry, making it difficult to distinguish people and objects, leading to mutual deterioration of vision. Treatment method: Suitable to use formulas that drain the Liver and tonify the Kidneys. Another version recorded in *Hongfei Ji* states that both Liver and Kidney are deficient with hyperactive fire. It suggests cooking pork liver, leaving it exposed overnight, slicing it thinly in the early morning, dipping it in Ye Mingsha (Stercoris Apiae, Bee Droppings), and chewing it finely. This medicine has the function of clearing brightness and benefiting the Gallbladder. A small pupil indicates Liver excess; a large pupil indicates Liver deficiency. If this condition is left untreated for a long time, the pupil often locks tight, becoming as small as a pinhole, with cloudiness forming inside, which may be yellow, green, or white. It appears not very distinct in shade and not very clear in sunlight, eventually leading to blindness! In the initial stage, if the eyeball feels heavy and painful, slightly red, but still able to see the Three Lights (Sun, Moon, Stars), treatment should include taking Wuxie Tang (Five Draining Decoction) and Shengfeng Tang (Wind-Prohibiting Decoction) combined with Bushen Wan (Kidney-Tonifying Pill), as well as Bushen Mingmu Wan. Long-term use yields good results. These formulas are provided earlier.
Wuxie Tang (Five Draining Decoction): Treats dryness and deficiency of the pupil with hyperactive fire, as well as hyperactive fire from deficiency in the Five Zang organs. This medicine can drain fire.
