关之
Indicated for conditions following sweating, characterized by aversion to heat, delirious speech, mental restlessness, abdominal fullness, and a floating pulse.
Rhubarb (4 liang, peeled, washed with wine) Licorice Root (2 liang, honey-fried) Mirabilite (0.5 sheng)
Crush the above three ingredients. Decoct in 3 sheng of water to obtain 1 sheng of liquid. Strain out the dregs. Add Mirabilite. Heat again gently until boiling. Take warm in small amounts frequently.
Song:
To harmonize Stomach Qi, roasted Licorice's merit is key;
Half a sheng of Mirabilite opens the earthy pathway free.
Two liang of Licorice and four of Rhubarb suffice,
The methods within are subtle, boundless their surprise.
Wei Litong's Note: This treats a condition originating in the Taiyang (Greater Yang) channel but transforming into an excess-heat syndrome of the Yangming (Yang Brightness). The Classic says: "When heat floods within, treat with salty-cold substances; when fire floods within, treat with bitter-warm substances." Here, using Tiaowei Chengqi Tang also takes the meaning of slow regulation.
Ci Nan Yuanxi's Note: Using Tiaowei Chengqi Tang for this syndrome can remedy the error of residual heat entering the Stomach after administering Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction). When used for Taiyang excess-heat syndrome, it can vent muscle heat to induce sweating; when used for Yangming syndrome, it can harmonize Stomach Qi to resolve slight stagnation. The self-note in Neitai Fang states that the three characters "pulse is floating" carry profound significance.
Indicated for diarrhea with undigested food, Jue-ni (reversal cold) involving the Three Yin channels, aversion to cold, and a deep, thready pulse. This formula is indicated for such conditions. It is a potent agent for warming meridians and rescuing Yang.
Licorice Root (2 liang, honey-fried) Dried Ginger (1.5 liang) Aconite Root (one piece, raw, peeled, cut into eight slices)
Crush the above three ingredients. Decoct in 3 sheng of water to obtain 1.2 sheng of liquid. Strain out the dregs. Divide into two doses and take warm. For robust individuals, use one large Aconite Root and 3 liang of Dried Ginger.
Song:
One raw Aconite, one-and-a-half Liang of Ginger,
Two Liang of Licorice form the Shaoyin prescription's center.
Ginger and Aconite perform like virtuous generals bold,
Who rely on Licorice's counsel, calm and controlled.
Wei Litong's Note: Sini Tang (Frigid Extremities Decoction) is the principal medicine for Shaoyin (Lesser Yin) disease. Used for this syndrome, it attracts and retains dissipating Yang. When used for Taiyang, it warms the meridians; when used together with Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction), it rescues...
Ci Nan Yuanxi's Note: Raw Aconite Root and Dried Ginger penetrate from top to bottom, dispel the myriad Yin pathogens, welcome Yang back to its residence, and connect the twelve meridians, possessing the power to break through enemy lines...
