Sudden redness and swelling of the eyes is due to Liver Heat (Gan Re, liver heat). At the onset, it must be caused by Wind (Feng, wind), so cold-natured remedies should not be used; they can only be used after four or five days. One should first use Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma) and Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) to disperse Wind, followed by Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), etc.
Chuanxiong (Cyperi Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Yuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Longdancao (Gentianae Radix).
Some physicians add Muzei (Equiseti Herba), Juemingzi (Cassiae Semen), Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum), Manjingzi (Vittariae Spora).
Shazhen (Measles) is a Fu-organ disease. Its eruption is exclusively related to the Lung Meridian. Although it stems from fetal toxin (Tai Du), it often carries the nature of epidemic pathogens (Shi Xing). Generally, in winter warmth diseases, it is appropriate to erupt measles, which is similar to erupting smallpox. Measles involves more transformations and is more severe than smallpox. If slightly exposed to cold or if raw/cold foods are ingested, the rash will recede into the skin and cause wheezing, leading to untreatable conditions. This differs from smallpox, which has visible colors for verification and predictable timelines. For the rash to erupt properly, the entire body must show no gaps in redness and swelling; otherwise, wheezing will occur, indicating danger. The initial eruption is characterized by extreme heat or alternating chills and fever, resembling Taiyang disease (Taiyang Bing, exterior syndrome), accompanied by tearing, coughing, irritability, and clear nasal discharge. Under light, the rash appears faint within the skin; upon touch, it feels distinct within the muscles. The rash appears and disappears intermittently, emerging and vanishing repeatedly. If the base of the rash is swollen, it indicates concurrent Urticaria (Yin Zhen, hives); if the skin is red, it indicates concurrent Macules (Ban Zhen, macules). Bright red-yellow and moist rash indicates a favorable prognosis (Shun), while dark purple/black and dull rash indicates an unfavorable prognosis (Ni). If the rash appears briefly and then vanishes, it is an extremely severe unfavorable prognosis. Treatment should employ mild sweating to vent Qi-level heat and clearing/draining to expel pathogens. Epistaxis resolves the heat because the Lung opens into the nose. Diarrhea allows toxins to descend because the Lung and Large Intestine are interior-exterior paired organs. Dryness and heat are feared, but sore throat is tolerable. Eruption too late requires exterior-releasing methods; eruption too dense requires detoxification. Bedding should not be too warm; cold remedies are strictly forbidden as they cause the rash to recede. Medical texts using Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), and Renshen (Ginseng Radix) are erroneous. My family's treatment for this condition is unparalleled. Previously, we used Shengma Tang (Cimicifugae Decoction), but Danggui is cloying and obstructs the chest, and Shaoyao is sour and cold, both being unsuitable. Our family has generationaly used Fangfeng Tang (Saposhnikoviae Decoction).
Fangfeng Tang: Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Shiunazi (Arctii Fructus), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus), Gange (Puerariae Radix), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), Chuanxiong (Cyperi Rhizoma), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthis Radix).
If the rash has not erupted, use Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba); if the color is too red, use Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix); if severe, use Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Yuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix); if the color is white/pale, use Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix); if coughing is severe, use Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex) and Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), or add Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba). Coughing at the initial stage indicates Lung Qi leakage, which is harmless if untreated; coughing after the rash indicates the need to drain the Lung. Severe wheezing requires doubling Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), and Su Zi (Perillae Fructus), or adding Ziwan (Asternatis Radix), Madouling (Aristolochiae Radix), and Kuandonghua (Farflos). Severe cases require doubling Sheng Gancao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), and Shiunazi (Arctii Fructus). Astringent urination requires Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Mutong (Akebiae Caulis). My family does not adhere to specific timings but strictly follows the above formula, adding a little wine to enhance efficacy, a secret unknown to others. If vomiting and diarrhea occur severely during the measles phase, with wheezing or profuse sweating and wheezing, Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) are used together. Fangfeng drains Lung excess, and combined with Huangqin, its effect is miraculous. Previously, the eruption period lasted one week; now it may last ten days or half a month. Red eyes and red soles indicate proper eruption; otherwise, it is a critical condition. Initial eruption uses mild/warm methods; full eruption uses cooling methods, which is an unchangeable principle. The rash must completely subside to avoid sequelae.
Four Critical Conditions After Measles:
1. High fever on the skin indicates toxins entering the Zang-Fu organs, muscle wasting, skeletal prominence, dry hair, and emaciated skin. This is named "Sha Gan" (Measles Malnutrition). Fewer than one in ten survive. Formula: Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Longdancao (Gentianae Radix), Lvhui (Aloe), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Yujin (Curcumae Radix), Ganchantou (Dry Bufo Head). In severe cases, use Yin Chaihu (Stellariae Radix) and Hu Huanglian (Picrorhizae Rhizoma). Our family's Fei'er Wan (Child-Nourishing Pill) using this formula is effective, also known as Lvhui Wan.
2. Coughing, chest distension, and high-pitched wheezing indicate toxins remaining in the Lung Meridian, possibly due to intolerance of sour/cold substances. Formula: Tingli (Descurainiae Semen seu Fructus), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Tiandong (Asparagi Radix), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Su Zi (Perillae Fructus), Madouling (Aristolochiae Radix). If the face is blue and voice hoarse, it is untreatable.
3. Rapid-onset Gum Gangrene (Zouma Ya Gan), where oral ulcers become foul and necrotic. If black like old soy sauce, cracking without bleeding, or if toxins enter the throat, it is untreatable.
4. Measels Dysentery (red and white stools). Treat according to dysentery protocols, adding Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) and Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus). For red dysentery, use Bidou (Phaseoli Semen), Baiye (Platycladi Cacumen), Jingjie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica), Chu Pi (Toosendan Cortex), Huashi (Talcum). Externally, boil Yuanxu (Coriandri Fructus) in wine and rub over the body with Zhu Ma (Ramie Fiber) mixed with wine to open pores and facilitate rash eruption. For any measles that fails to erupt, drink thick decoction of cotton gauze to induce immediate eruption. There is another condition suspected as measles, unknown to the public. Infants aged around one month present with mottled rashes like measles but without coughing. This is due to heat retained in the womb causing blood/qi stagnation; upon ingesting breast milk, the qi rises while blood remains unharmonized, causing this condition. Do not mistake it for measles. My family treats it similarly to measles, though this is a compromise approach.
For all rashes, whether just appearing or fully erupted, avoid: pork, walnuts, water chestnuts, oranges, and all raw/cold foods.
After eruption, further avoid: chicken, fish, salt, sour flavors, and pungent/spicy foods.
Chicken causes recurrence of rash; salt and sour flavors cause persistent coughing; five pungent spices cause convulsions. He who obtains this secret should remember it.
