Jin Zhi (Human Urine Distillate):
Taste is sweet and bitter, nature is greatly cold, non-toxic, enters the Heart Meridian. It primarily treats manic fever caused by epidemic pathogens, dry-heat due to Yin deficiency, resolves all toxins, and cures all sores. Those buried in soil for a long time are superior.
Note: The *Suwen* states: "Turbid Yin exits through the lower orifices," thus it is sufficient to subdue Yang hyperactivity. Since the Heart is the master of Fire, Jin Zhi uniquely enters the Heart Meridian. Preparation method: In winter, place a bamboo basket on top of a vat, cover it fully with palm fiber, add several layers of straw paper, pour urine onto it, and let the filtrate drip into the vat. Store in a new urn, cover with a ceramic bowl, seal tightly with salt mud, bury deep in the ground for many years until it naturally becomes clear like spring water, with no foul odor. Another method: In the twelfth lunar month, take light bamboo, scrape off the green skin, soak it in a latrine to extract juice, which is also good.
Qiu Shi (White):
Taste is sweet and salty, nature is neutral, non-toxic, enters the Spleen Meridian. It primarily treats abdominal distension and fullness caused by pediatric malnutrition (Gan accumulation). It must be rinsed clean in water, stored in a bucket,剖 open frogs fed to fatten them, exposed to the scorching sun until steamed dry, covered tightly to cause death, then dried over gentle fire.
Note: Maggots are substances of turbid Yin that descend and flow without restriction; they possess the principle of descending and purging, hence they specifically enter the Spleen Meridian. They are most effective for treating pediatric Gan syndrome.
Ren Zhong Bai (Calculus Humanis / Urinary Calculus from Vessel):
Taste is salty, nature is cold, non-toxic, enters the Heart and Lung Meridians. It primarily treats heat from consumptive disorders, vomiting blood and epistaxis, phlegm-wheezing and cough, traumatic stasis, postpartum retained blood, generates fluids and quenches thirst, promotes urination and defecation. That from young males is superior. Accumulated scale in vessels is called Ren Zhong Bai. Calcined over gentle fire on tiles until the essence remains, processed with wine and vinegar. Its function is similar to urine. It treats mouth ulcers and phlegm nodules; those exposed to the open air for years are best.
Note: Human urine reduces fire fastest. Zhu Danxi said: "Excess Qi becomes Fire." The Lung governs Qi, and the Heart belongs to Fire, so it appropriately enters both meridians. It reduces fire without injuring with coldness, and its tonifying efficacy is great, yet Materia Medica texts do not mention this, what a pity! Chu Cheng said: "Using child's urine to treat blood disorders, one rarely fails," thereby utilizing its true function.
Qiu Shi (Refined/Dark):
Taste is salty, nature is slightly cold, non-toxic, enters the Lung and Kidney Meridians. It primarily nourishes Kidney Water, returns to the root and restores origin, nourishes the Dantian, returns to the root and restores life, harmonizes the Five Zang Organs, moistens the San Jiao, eliminates thick phlegm with reverse coughing, retreats bone-steaming consumption fever, removes drum-like distension, softens hard accumulations, brightens the eyes and clears the mind, prolongs life and benefits longevity.
Note: The salinity of Qiu Shi originally specializes in entering the Kidney Meridian, and since the Lung is the mother of the Kidney, it enters both. It must be prepared using both Yin and Yang refining methods and taken together, embodying the meaning of Kan and Li achieving balance. Su Dongpo has refining methods available for use.
