Lei Gong said: When using Asparagi Radix (Tianmendong), after harvesting, remove the outermost layer of the epidermis, split it open, and remove the core. Steam it in a willow-wood steamer fueled by willow wood for one double-hour (12 hours), sprinkle wine evenly over it, and steam again with increased heat; take it out, sun-dry it, place it on a small rack about two chi above the ground lined with leaves of Asparagus cochinchinensis, spread the steamed Asparagi Radix to dry for use.
Lei Gong said: When using Asparagi Radix, the head and tail tips must be removed. The head and tail parts can induce vomiting.
For processing, each jin (approx. 500g) should be cut into three-cun long segments, split into six or seven slices, placed in a porcelain vessel, soaked and steamed in wine from Si hour to Wu hour, taken out, dried, and finely sliced.
For every jin of the herb, apply seven liang of su (animal fat/butter), roast until the su is completely absorbed.
Alternatively, process it first until both the inside and outside are reddish-yellow for better efficacy.
Lei Gong said: When using raw Rehmanniae Radix (Shengdihuang), remove the white skin, steam it in a willow-wood steamer placed on a porcelain pot, spread it out to let the heat dissipate, mix with wine, steam again, and then take out to dry.
Do not allow it to come into contact with copper or iron vessels, as this will cause kidney qi depletion, whiten the beard and hair, damage Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi) in men, and Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) in women.
Lei Gong said: When using Semen Cuscutae (Tusizi), do not use seeds of Tianbi Cao (likely referring to a look-alike plant). Although they look very similar, the taste of Tianbi Cao seeds is sour, astringent, and sticky, making them unsuitable for medicinal use. Semen Cuscutae inherits neutral qi, condenses pure yang qi to form seeds, predominantly tonifies the body's Wei Qi, and assists the sinews and vessels. Its single stem grows by sensing and attaching to tree branches, and it forms fruit by receiving yang qi in mid-spring. Regarding its weight/energy reception, it involves seven yi and two liang (Note: This appears to be a specific traditional measurement or textual anomaly, translated literally).
For processing, harvest completely, remove the coarse outer shell, soak in kujiu (vinegar) for two days, drain, soak overnight in the natural juice of Polygonati Rhizoma (Huangjing), and by morning, simmer gently over low fire until dry. Place in a mortar, pound with a heated iron pestle more than three thousand times to make powder for use.
Kujiu (vinegar) and the natural juice of Polygonati Rhizoma are used in conjunction with Semen Cuscutae.
Lei Gong said: When using Polygonati Rhizoma (Huangjing), after removing the head and dirt, soak it overnight in the natural juice of Polygonati Rhizoma itself, drain, slice finely, bake until dry, and use.
Lei Gong said: When using Ophiopogonis Radix (Weirui/Yuzhu), do not use Gouwen (Aconitum carmichaelii side roots) or Huangjing, as these three substances look similar but are different; using the wrong one may harm the patient. Weirui has hairs on its nodes, mottled stems, and small yellow spots at the leaf tips.
For processing, after harvesting, first scrape off the node skin with a bamboo knife, wash clean, then soak in honey-water overnight, steam, bake until dry, and use.
