Between the four limbs, or on the head and face, a carbuncle (Ju, a deep-seated suppurative infection) may suddenly appear. The tip of the lesion is black, the skin is purple, and the pain is extremely severe. This is caused by toxic pathogens in Yang syndromes. If treated improperly, it can also be fatal. The toxicity of Yang syndromes develops rapidly; even if anti-toxic herbs are used for treatment, recovery can be achieved promptly. However, Ju and Yong (Yong, a superficial suppurative infection) are actually different. Yong ulcerates internally, whereas Ju swells externally. Lesions that ulcerate internally are difficult to treat externally; those that swell externally are easier to dissipate through internal regulation. Although the toxicity of both Yong and Ju emanates from the interior to the exterior, there is no case where internal treatment cannot lead to external healing. Nevertheless, Ju is particularly suitable for internal treatment. The prescription is Xiaoku Decoction (Xiaoju Tang):
Prunellae Spica (Xiakucao, 2 liang), Honeysuckle Stem (Rendongteng, 2 liang), Angelica Sinensis Root (Danggui, 2 liang), Forsythia Fruit (Lianqiao, 3 qian), Rehmannia Root (Shengdi, 3 qian), Sanguisorba Root (Diyu, 3 qian);
Trichosanthes Root (Tianhuafen, 3 qian), Angelica Dahurica Root (Baizhi, 2 qian), Licorice Root (Gancao, 2 qian).
Decoct with water and take orally. For lesions not yet ulcerated, two doses will eliminate them; for those already ulcerated, four doses will result in complete recovery. This prescription is a general formula for treating malignant carbuncles. Anyone suffering from Ju who uses this prescription will find it remarkably effective. Because nourishing blood and dispersing toxicity promotes blood circulation, making it difficult for toxins to remain; cooling blood and clearing fire lowers blood temperature, facilitating the dispersion of fire. Since Ju mostly belongs to Yang syndromes, treatment is invariably appropriate.
Secret Formula:
Xiaoku Decoction uses Prunella,
Honeysuckle and Angelica each two liang mixed well,
Forsythia, Shengdi, Diyu, and Trichosanthes three qian each,
Angelica Dahurica two qian, Licorice good quality.
Another prescription for treating malignant carbuncles:
