This prescription aims to break blood stasis and promote blood circulation; it is an excellent formula for "Dry Blood Consumption" (Ganxue Lao) as commonly known in secular medicine. If there is dry blood within the body, due to long-standing accumulation, it becomes firm and difficult to break. The newly generated blood cannot circulate and irrigate the whole body. As it accumulates day by day, death is inevitable. Zhang Zhongjing employed miraculous skills to revive the dead: using moistening medicines to lubricate the dry blood, and using creatures that move like worms and feed on blood to move the dead blood. It employs potent drugs but adopts a slow strategy, gradually eliminating the accumulation over time. Once the stasis is removed, consumption may be restored. This is truly a formula that seeks life from death.
Jiayan (Dai Linjiao) stated: In cases of extreme consumption, blood bi (obstruction) occurs, leading to gradual dryness. Although the skin may appear fresh and smooth, the face lacks luster and vitality. Wherever Qi passes, blood no longer moves, merely steaming the blood to generate heat. Sometimes this occurs in the afternoon (Ribu), or at midnight/noon (Ziwu). Initially, there is dry heat. When the steaming qi dissipates, slight sweating occurs, and the heat resolves. Day after day, the steaming heat continues unabated until Yin is exhausted and blood is dried up. What else can one wait for but death? Even worse, prolonged heat steams the accumulated blood, transforming it into parasites, thus forming "Chuan Shi Lao" (Transmitting Corpse Consumption). He further said: I have observed that children's Zang-Fu organs are fragile and tender. Any accumulation of cold-heat easily forms masses or malnutrition syndromes. By the time blood bi occurs and Qi evaporation generates heat, it is already incurable. Women with blood dryness leading to amenorrhea, accompanied by continuous fever, show more signs of tuberculosis (Laozai). Once the condition has progressed, even with good methods, treatment is futile. If one could follow Zhang Zhongjing's foresight, during the incipient stage of tuberculosis in men and women, when Stomach Qi can still withstand medication, one should urgently guide blood circulation, administering it together with Renshen (Ginseng Root) to promote Qi and blood movement. For example, adding Tao Ren (Peach Seed) paste and Dahuang (Rhubarb Rhizome) powder to Qiongyu Gao (Jade Dew Elixir), or using this pill delivered with Qiongyu Gao, a moistening and tonifying medicine, to move stasis and reduce heat, thereby preserving life. This is of great importance, yet those who stick to conventions cannot utilize it. My commentary notes: This formula belongs to attacking agents, designed specifically for dry blood, not a common formula for general consumption. If applied without clear diagnosis, it often accelerates death.
Tale Liver Powder (Tagan San): Treats Transmitting Corpse Consumption. (One must confirm the presence of evil parasites. Use Xurxiang (Frankincense) to smoke the patient's dorsal hand, cover with cloth, and after a long time, hairs about one cun long will grow. White-yellowish ones are treatable; reddish ones are less likely to heal; bluish-black ones indicate death. If smoking for a long time yields no hair, it belongs to ordinary consumption. Another method: If the patient inhales Anxi Xiang (Benzoin) smoke without coughing, it is not Transmitting Corpse Disease.)
Tale Liver (One piece, roasted dry. Pulverized. Take 2 qian with water, three times daily, until acne-like spots appear. Externally: Roast dry peach tree heads and willow tree heads, pound into a paste, mix with Shexiang (Musk) and Xionghuang (Realgar) powder, warm it, and rub onto the spine and limb joints. Additionally, decoct 1 jin of Baibu (Stemona Root) and 4 liang of Tao Ye (Peach Leaf). Surround the area with honey to prevent wind exposure. Place a basin of charcoal fire in the center. After heating, bathe morning and evening. Burn Yushu Dan (Jade Pivot Pill) in the room; inhaling its aroma can kill parasites.)
This is an antiparasitic agent. In consumption with steaming heat, long-standing accumulation generates evil parasites that devour the Zang-Fu organs. Sharing the same Qi and connected branches, they spread easily, even causing family extinction. The treatment method should tonify deficiency to restore Yuan Qi, and kill parasites to cut off the root. If the parasites are killed, even if the patient does not survive, transmission can be prevented. *Jin Gui Yao Lue* attaches Tale Liver Powder after the Consumption chapter; surely there is a profound meaning. Others such as Tale Claws, Xionghuang, Tao Ren, Leiwan (Albizzia Seed), Qinghao (Artemisia Annua), and Baibu are all drugs used for killing parasites in consumption and must be studied. Mr. Liu stated: Whenever children or unmarried girls do not laugh, or widows/widowers, monks, and nuns suffer from emotional depression, stagnation generates heat, which eventually breeds parasites invading the Zang-Fu and bone marrow, making them hard to treat. At the onset, one should only soothe emotions, maintain tranquility, internally administer formulas that vent stagnant heat, such as Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder), to prevent internal heat. Externally, use rubbing methods for a slim chance of success. Those close to patients should avoid hunger; deficient individuals must take tonics. Wearing Anxi Xiang and Shexiang prevents parasite invasion.
Changchun Guangsi Dan: Greatly tonifies True Yin and strengthens Kidney Yang, secures Essence, fills Marrow, and strengthens bones and tendons. A hundred-year-old man taking this will become stronger. It is the number one formula in the human world. (In the capital, I saw a poster for Donkey Kidney Long Turtle Pill, wondered about this formula, bought it at a high price, but it remained secret. Later, I met an eccentric scholar and obtained it inadvertently. It was said to be presented by An Lushan, effective when taken by Emperor Minghuang, hence the imperial praise. Though the story seems absurd, the formula itself is indeed precious. Those who prepare and take it according to this formula achieve great effects. Therefore, I publish it for enthusiasts.)
Shengdi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, 8 liang, mixed with 1 liang fine powder of Sharen (Amomum Fruit), soaked in wine, nine steamed and nine sun-dried.) Lianxu (Nelumbinis Stamen) Fupenzi (Rubiae Fructus) Shayuan Jili (Astragali Complanati Semen, secures primal Essence. Stir-fried. All above sun-dried, net weight 4 liang.) Lujiaojiao (Deer Antler Glue) Guijiajiao (Tortoise Shell Glue, each 1 jin.) Hugujiao (Tiger Bone Glue, half jin, all made into paste with wine.) Biaojiao (Fish Maw Glue, fried, net 1 jin.) Zhujingsui (Porcine Spinal Cord, 40 strips.) Huangniujingyangrou (Yellow Cow Essence Mutton) Heigourou (Black Dog Meat, each 10 jin, made into paste. Add 1 liang Sharen powder to each.) Zihache (Human Placenta, belongs to Qi and Blood, rapid effect in tonifying Essence. More than 10 pieces. Preparation same as above.) Gouyinxing (Canine Penis, treats impotence, makes it strong and hot. White Horse Penis, Donkey Penis have similar functions. These three are often used in sexual arts formulas. 40 to 100 pieces. Flatten with bone, steam with 2 liang Chuangzi (Cnidii Fructus) coated in wine and roast, seeds not used.) Lv yinxing (Donkey Penis, 4 pieces, preparation same as above.) Xiong Wan Can'e (Male Late Silkworm Moth, strengthens Yang preventing flaccidity, stops sperm leakage. Late silkworm is chosen for fertility sensitivity. Fried. Remove feet and wings, 4 liang. If the above three are unavailable, they may be omitted.)
(Total 32 ingredients. Make pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take 4-5 qian with light salt water on an empty stomach, or aged wine when hungry, followed by rich food to settle the medicine.) For obese people with much flesh and damp-phlegm, use the complete formula of Qibao Meiran Dan: Chi Heshouwu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix, red) and Bai Heshouwu (white, mixed with black beans, steamed and sun-dried nine times, each 1 jin.) Chi Fuling (Red Poria) and Bai Fuling (White Poria, each half jin.) Gouqi, Tusizi, Niuxi, Danggui, Buguzhi (each half jin, original formula uses only 4 liang.) Still use Renshen, plus Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 1 jin.) Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum) and Sharen (each 4 liang.) Then Gui and Lu glues as above.
This formula primarily tonifies the Kidney severely, assisting with regulating the Five Zang organs. The Classics state: The Kidney governs hibernation, is the root of sealing and storing, and the gathering place of Essence. It is the organ of True Yin, the foundation of congenital constitution, and the root of life. Thus, Kidney Essence values storage. However, Essence is also transformed from the Five Zang organs, and the Kidney receives and stores it. Therefore, when the Five Zang harmonize, Essence naturally generates; when the Kidney is tonified, sealing and storing function properly. As stated: Full Essence leads to abundant Qi; abundant Qi leads to complete Shen (Spirit); complete Shen leads to physical health; physical health means no disease, allowing for longevity and progeny. Middle-aged men feeling Yang decline and thin Essence can take this. Although there are 32 ingredients, they are all similar有情 (sentient/nature-connected) agents, without miscellaneous items. Like Han Xin's army, the more, the better. Those with easily activated Ministerial Fire and Yin deficiency with internal heat must absolutely not take it, as it will cause other diseases. Commentary: This formula is not set for treating consumption per se, but attached afterwards because human deficiency arises from desire. For deficiency with hyperactive fire, formulas like Baoyin, Liuwei Dihuang Wan, Zuogui Wan, Huisheng Dan are available. For deficiency with declining fire, Babei Dihuang Wan, Yougui Wan are selectable. For those with small genitalia, easy flaccidity and emission, thin and cold Essence, and infertility, taking this formula causes no harm and brings great benefit. It is moistening but not drying, warming but not hot. Compared to sexual arts formulas full of acrid-hot and mixed agents, the difference is vast.
In consumption syndromes, a void and rapid pulse indicates difficult treatment; six beats per breath and above indicate certain death. Appearance of Jie Mai (Knotted Pulse) or Dai Mai (Intermittent Pulse) indicates death. Body heat indicates death; a choppy and small pulse also indicates death. (Choppy-small indicates injury to both Essence and Blood, external and internal heat, leading to immediate exhaustion.) String-taut pulse in both hands indicates Wood overcoming Earth failure. If the left hand pulse is fine and the right hand pulse is floating, large, and forceful, it also indicates Wood overcoming Earth failure and death. In various hemorrhagic syndromes, cool body with slow/small pulse is treatable; hot body with rapid/large pulse is difficult to treat (due to Yang excess and Yin deficiency). Further appearance of coughing with rebellious Qi, inability to lie down indicates death.
Consumption patients unable to tolerate Renshen (Ginseng) and Huangqi (Astragalus Root) die from inability to accept tonification. (Tonifying Yang in Yin deficiency makes Yang hyperactive and Yin more deficient, increasing frequent cough, sore throat, bloody sputum, and upper Jiao heat.) Consumption cough with hoarseness indicates death. Inability to sleep on one side indicates Lung failure. Chronic diarrhea in consumption indicates death. Emaciation of large muscles indicates Spleen failure. Coughing incessantly with white blood indicates death. (Metal suffering from Fire punishment, severe damage produces white foam. Blood exhausted in the Lung becomes white saliva/fluid. Though white, it is transformed from blood. Some call it white blood, pale red, resembling meat or lung tissue.) Consumption with long-term hemoptysis and silent sore throat is lower transmitting to upper; non-coughing, non-painful, but long-term turbid urine and spermatorrhea is upper transmitting to lower. Both indicate death.
