310. Jaundice: The five types of jaundice are divided into Yin Jaundice and Yang Jaundice. If the application of the Yellow Beeswax Formula (Huangla Fang) is ineffective, it is Yang Jaundice. Treatment with Man Tian Xing (Lysimachia christinae) will invariably result in recovery. What are the five types? They are Jaundice (Huangdan), Grain Jaundice (Gu Dan), Wine Jaundice (Jiu Dan), Female Labor Jaundice (Nv Lao Dan), and Fatigue Jaundice (Lao Dan). Symptoms include a body yellow like gold, possibly accompanied by swelling, vomiting, or yellowing of the eyes and sclera. Emergency treatment involves using thin grass paper rolled around a pen tube like a firecracker, sealing one end tightly. Melt yellow beeswax in a copper vessel and pour it evenly around the paper tube, ensuring no wax enters the inside. Have the patient lie supine and cover the navel with the wax tube. With the sealed end facing down, use flour to make a ring protecting the base of the tube to prevent air leakage. Ignite the top of the tube and burn until it reaches the flour ring at the base. Remove and replace with another tube to continue burning. Observe if yellow fluid resembling egg yolk flows from the navel; if so, remove it. For mild cases, burn seven or eight tubes; for severe cases, twenty tubes. Burn twice daily. The goal is to extract all yellow fluid. One case involved a patient with golden-yellow skin, generalized edema, inability to eat, immediate vomiting upon ingestion, and failure of hundred remedies. Treated according to this method, full recovery occurred in three days. Truly an immortal formula. Treasure and keep secret.
Linwu Shanshan's effective formula for jaundice uses: Xanthium Fruit (Cang Er Zi), Mint (Bo He), Akebia Caulis (Mu Tong), and Yinchendao (Mian Yin Chen), each 3 qian. Decoct with aged rice wine to obtain one bowl of juice. Separately, take 3 qian of stir-fried Amomum Fruit (Sha Ren) powder mixed with water. If urine is red like blood, add 1 qian of Coptis Rhizome (Huang Lian) and decoct together; the effect is miraculous.
Another formula uses fresh Imperata Rhizome (Mao Gen) boiled with pork meat; eating it several times leads to recovery.
Yet another formula uses Bitter Clove (Ku Ding Xiang) ground into fine powder, inserted into the nostrils. After one shi (two hours), yellow fluid flows from the nose. Stop when the fluid is exhausted. Repeat once after three days for complete recovery.
For Yang Jaundice, use Man Tian Xing (Lysimachia christinae), which has small, smooth leaves and grows abundantly in flower pots and under steps. Wash clean including roots, take approximately half a tea spoonful, crush, and boil with several liang of pork. Drink the soup and eat the meat one or two times. The yellow color recedes and recovery occurs. Tested repeatedly with miraculous results.
Another formula uses 1 fen of Dang Men Zi (Musk) placed in the navel. Then, take a yellow-skinned toad, split it open, and place the whole toad including viscera over the navel. Bind with cloth. Recovery occurs in a few days. Contraindicated for pregnant women. Do not use toads with red eyes or those lacking an "eight-character" pattern on the belly, as they are toxic.
Severe jaundice leading to death-like state and unconsciousness is Yang Jaundice. Use one white-feathered black-bone chicken (also known as Rong Hua Ji, Bai Feng Huang, or Si Mao Ji). Pluck feathers, split open, remove viscera. Place over the heart area. The patient revives shortly after. Treat subsequently with the previous formula.
Post-illness yellowing of body and face, hematemesis filling a basin, is also Yang Jaundice, unresponsive to various medicines. Use ten river snails, wash away mud, crush. Leave exposed overnight. At dawn (Wu Geng), take the clear juice and drink two or three times. Bleeding stops, yellowing recedes, and recovery ensues. Avoid eating snails after recovery.
Chest fullness and abdominal distension indicate Spleen Earth deficiency and Liver Wood excess. Wood overcoming Earth causes this, potentially leading to yellow swelling of body and face, or swelling without yellowing. Formula: Cang Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) 2 jin, soaked in rice washing water for one day and two nights, charred to retain nature; Tian Jiu Qu (Sweet Wine Yeast) 4 liang, charred to retain nature; Zao Fan (Alum) 1 jin, soaked in vinegar, dried, calcined in a bottle to retain nature; add Ping Wei San (Calm the Stomach Powder). Grind all to fine powder, mix with vinegar to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 30-40 pills per dose with wine. Rice soup is also acceptable. Twice daily. A miraculous immortal formula.
Waitai Mi Yao (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) emergency formula for thirty-six types of jaundice: Burn one egg with shell to ash. Grind and mix with one he of vinegar, then warm. Take all at once. For extreme yellowing of body and eyes, no more than three eggs are needed. Worms may exit the nose; the effect is miraculous.

Decoct beans and Poria in water first, then add other herbs ground to powder. Take half a dose. Vomiting should occur shortly; recovery follows. Avoid Song Cai (Chinese Cabbage), strong vinegar, and Hai Zao (Sargassum). Some recovered by taking only Tu Gua Gen (Solomon's Seal Rhizome) juice.
312. Yellow Sweat: Yellow Sweat disease presents with severe body edema, fever, sweating, and thirst. It resembles Feng Shui (Wind Water) disease, but sweat stains clothes yellow like cypress sap. The pulse is deep. This arises from heat in the Spleen and Stomach, where sweat opens pores allowing water entry, such as during bathing. Treat with Huang Qi (Astragalus Root), Shao Yao (Peony Root), Gui Xin (Cinnamon Heart), and wine. Huang Qi 5 liang, Shao Yao 3 liang, Gui Xin 3 liang. Chop coarsely. Decoct with one part Ku Jiu (Vinegar) and seven parts water to yield three parts. Strain and take one sheng warm. Heart vexation is expected initially. By the sixth or seventh day, vexation resolves due to the astringent nature of vinegar. Avoid raw green onions.
313. Jaundice: Cui Shi's treatment for jaundice, suitable for poor families unable to afford medicine: Take three sheng of willow branches, decoct in water to obtain a thick liquid. Take half a sheng, finishing the entire dose in one go. Another formula for jaundice and heart/abdominal discomfort: Take a large handful of Man Jing Zi (Turnip Seeds), crush, cook thoroughly, and grind. Add one sheng of water, grind again, filter to obtain one large cup. Take all at once. Diarrhea or vomiting may follow, relieving abdominal distension. Sweating may also lead to recovery. Contraindicated for Acute Jaundice (Ji Huang).
Jiang Jiu suffered from jaundice and recovered using Yin Chen Tang and pills from Bi Xiao Fang for all types of jaundice. Formula: Yin Chen 4 liang, Da Huang (Rhubarb) 3 liang, Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root) 3 liang, Zhi Zi (Gardenia Fruit) 3 liang. Decoct these four ingredients in five sheng of water to yield three sheng. Divide into three doses. Take on an empty stomach. Alternatively, grind, sift, mix with honey to form pills. Take 20 pills with water, increasing slightly to 25 pills. Decoction is superior to pills for severe cases. Avoid mutton, alcohol, wheat products, and hot foods. Continue until cured. Treats yellow urine and yellow body.
Waitai Mi Yao formula for various jaundices, even when eyes are yellow: Gua Di San (Melon Seed Powder). Ding Xiang (Clove) 1 fen, Chi Xiao Dou 1 fen, Gua Di 1 fen, Shu Mi (Millet) 1 fen. Grind the three herbs to powder. Decoct and mix with Shu Mi. Take before meals in one dose. Expect diarrhea and expulsion of yellow fluid. Repeat if necessary. Alternatively, make pills the size of beans and insert into nostrils. Yellow fluid flows out shortly.
Recent effective formula for yellowing, where body, face, and eyes are golden yellow, and urine is dark yellow like cypress bark, unresponsive to other doctors: Liang Yan Yin Chen Tang. Yin Chen 4 liang, Huang Qin 3 liang, Zhi Zi 3 liang, Sheng Ma (Cimicifuga Rhizome) 3 liang, Long Dan Cao (Gentian Root) 2 liang, Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange) 2 liang, Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root) 4 liang. If the body is extremely emaciated, add Sheng Di Huang (Rehmannia Root) and decoct in water.
314. Female Labor Jaundice: Symptoms include yellowing of body and eyes, fever with aversion to cold, lower abdominal fullness and urgency, and difficult urination. Caused by sexual intercourse during heavy labor and high heat, followed by entering water. Abdominal fullness indicates difficult treatment. Xiao Shi Fan Shi San (Nitrostone and Alum Powder) is indicated. Formula: Xiao Shi (Saltpeter) roasted until yellow, Fan Shi (Alum) roasted until juices evaporate. Mix equal parts, sieve through silk. Take with barley gruel, one fang cun bi per dose. Three times daily. Cover with thick clothing to induce sweating. Disease exits via stool and urine. Urine becomes yellow, stool becomes black.
315. Female Labor Jaundice: If body is yellow, forehead black, stool black and loose, feet feel hot, this is Female Labor Jaundice. Abdominal fullness indicates difficult treatment. Formula: Gan Hua Shi (Talcum) powder 5 liang, Shi Gao (Gypsum) powder 5 liang. Make powder. Take with barley gruel, one fang cun bi per dose. Three times daily. Recovery occurs when urination is profuse.
