Malaria that manifests after noon belongs to this category. Take Qingpi (Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), and Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae) each at 3 qian, and 5 Zhenwumei (Fructus Mume) with 2 bowls of water. Decoct until 8/10 remains. Expose overnight in the open air. On the day of onset, reheat and take orally; the efficacy is miraculous.
Hanzhicao (Herba Ecliptae), ground into particles the size of soybeans, wrapped in Zisuye (Folium Perillae). For males, insert into the left nostril; for females, into the right nostril. After half a day, nasal discharge and tears will occur. Mild cases are cured immediately, while severe cases heal gradually. Alternatively, treat according to the aforementioned formulas. Refer to Volume 16 "Summary of Medicinal Materials" for information on Hanzhicao.
Shouwu (Radix Polygoni Multiflori Preparata) 5 qian, Cangzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Lanceae) 3 qian, Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) 2 qian, Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) 1 qian, Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae) 5 fen. Add 4 bowls of water, decoct until 1.5 bowls remain. Take at Jiming time (3:00–5:00 AM); the malaria will stop immediately. If not cured, follow the aforementioned formulas.
The aforementioned external treatments can be used for chronic malaria.
Biejia (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis) roasted with vinegar, ground into powder, taken with wine at 2 qian per dose. Take once the night before, once early in the morning, and once just before onset; there are no uncured cases. Adding a small amount of Xionghuang (Realgar) is even better. This is from Ge Xian's *Zhouhou Fang* (Emergency Prescriptions Kept Up One’s Sleeve).
Another formula: A large handful of Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae), add 4 bowls of water, decoct until 2 bowls remain. Take one dose before the onset of fever and one dose after it passes; cure follows.
Another formula: Whether occurring twice a day, two to three times a day, or once every two to three days. Use Wulingzhi (Faeces Trogopterori) and scalp oil each at 1 qian, and Chen Shihui (Calx Carbonisata) 2 qian. Grind into powder, bind with rice flour to make pills the size of silkworm beans. Take one pill at Wugeng time (3:00–5:00 AM) with Wugen Water (rainwater/snowmelt); the malaria stops. This is a miraculous formula.
Another formula: Two large fleshy dates (peeled and pitted), 2 Banmao (Mylabris), baked and ground. Mix evenly with date pulp, add a little cooked lard, and form into cakes.
Another formula: Changshan (Radix Dichroae) boiled in wine and dried, Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae), Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae), and Caoguo (Fructus Tsaoko) each at 1.5 qian. Decoct in water, take hot at Wugeng time. This formula has been used by some for over thirty years with extraordinary effects that cannot be fully described. Do not arbitrarily modify the ingredients.
Pingmayangpi Wan (Malaria-Pacifying and Spleen-Nourishing Pills): Effective regardless of whether the disease is recent or long-standing, truly the royal path for treating malaria. For those with chronic malaria and deficiency, nothing else will cure them. Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng) (if unavailable, use Gaolishen [Korean Ginseng]), Jiaozhu (Scorched Atractylodes Rhizome), Piao Cangzhu (Washed Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome), Fuling (Poria), steamed with human milk; Chenpi (Citrus Reticulate Peel stir-fried with wine); Qingpi (Citrus Reticulate Exocarp stir-fried with vinegar); Zhi Banxia (Prepared Pinellia Tuber); Zi Su [Text missing]; processed into pills the size of rice grains.
