Commonly known as "chicken blind eye" (nyctalopia), this condition is caused by Liver deficiency. Take yellow beeswax in any amount, melt it, remove from heat, and mix with appropriate amounts of clam powder (Concha Meretricis). Use two qian of the mixture each time. Slice a pig liver (sheep liver is better) weighing two liang, insert the medicine inside, tie it securely with hemp rope, place it in one bowl of water, and boil together in a copper vessel until cooked. Remove and fumigate the eyes while hot.
Another prescription: Boil two liang of sheep liver until cooked, then eat it dipped in soot from the bottom of the cooking pot. It will be cured after two or three times. Soot from burning straw is preferred; soot from burning coal must absolutely not be used.
Any condition involving swelling of both eyes, severe redness and pain, itching with excessive tearing, sensitivity to light and wind, susceptibility to external irritation, nasal congestion, and soreness of the head are all indications for these prescriptions. The following formulas listed below will certainly cure them. However, when washing the eyes, it is essential to do so within a mosquito net or curtain to avoid wind. Even removing clothes or lifting blankets within the net can cause air movement, so care must be taken. If wind is not carefully avoided, the treatment will be ineffective.
Bi-Nasal Powder: Dried Eleplantasia herb (Herba Centipedae) five qian (check *Materia Medica Preparation* for details), real Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis), and Chuanxiong Rhizome (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) one liang each. Grind all into a fine powder and insufflate into the nose.
Another method: Look around at a well three times daily to dispel fire-heat.
Another method: Mix Dan Sha (Mineral Cinnabar) with white honey and apply to the Taiyang acupoint (Ex-HN5, Temple) for immediate effect.
Another method: Light white Lu Gan Shi (Calamina Lapis) (preferably that which floats on water). Soak in child's urine (Tong Bian) for one day and night (the longer, the better). Calcine in charcoal fire until red, then soak again for one day, calcine again. Then soak in Chuan Lian Zi (Fructus Picrasmae) decoction for one day and night (the longer, the better). Calcine in charcoal fire until red, soak again for one day, calcine again. Take one qian of this processed Calamina, Jing Peng Sha (Borax) five fen, Da Zhu Sha (Cinnabar) four fen, Zhen Zhu (Pearl) three fen, Ya Se Mei Hua Bing Pian (Platycodon/Boar Tusk flavored Borneol), Zhi Ru Xiang (Processed Frankincense) (check *Materia Medica Preparation*), and Bo He Wei (Mentha Haplocalyx) powder, each two fen. Grind together into an extremely fine powder until silent; test by placing on the tongue—it should leave no residue. Dip a bone needle into clear water, moisten with a small amount of powder, and apply to the eyes. This treats all conditions of wind-fire causing swelling and ulceration with miraculous efficacy.
Another method: Sesame seed (Semen Sesami Nigrum), Wei Ling Xian (Radix Saposhnikoviae), He Shou Wu (Radix Polygoni Multiflori Preparata), Ku Shen (Radix Sophorae Flavescentis), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), and Shi Chang Pu (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii), each three qian. Grind into a fine powder. Take three qian per dose, washed down with yellow wine. This is an immortal prescription carved on stone at Wudang Mountain, with unparalleled efficacy. It also treats Head Wind (Teng Feng) and eye diseases.
Another method: Ku Shen one and a half qian, Wu Bei Zi (Galla Chinensis) one qian, Ming Fan (Alumen), Bo He (Mentha Haplocalyx), and Jing Jie Sui (Schizonepeta Spike), each three fen. Decoct in water. Before sleep, gently wash the eyes with silk cloth while avoiding wind. Extremely effective.
Another method: One black date (Ziziphus jujuba), a piece of Dan Fan (Chalcanthite/Vitriol) the size of a soybean, Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex) three fen. Steam thoroughly with water. Wash with warm solution four or five times; reheat if it cools.
Another method: Chuan Lian Zi (Fructus Picrasmae), Fang Feng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Bai Ju Hua (Flos Chrysanthemi Indici), Gui Wei (Radix Angelicae Sinensis Tail), each one qian. Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Tong Lv (Malachite Green), Dan Fan (Chalcanthite), each five fen, three fen respectively. Seven Xing Ren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum) (peeled, tips removed, crushed). Soak in water, steam until hot, and wash according to the previous method. Very effective.
