A formula for treating dry and painful throat due to Yin deficiency with hyperactive fire, to be modified according to circumstances. *Tian Dong* (Asparagi Radix) 3 qian (remove the heart), *Da Sheng Di* (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) 2 qian (soaked in wine), *Jiu Huang Qin* (Scutellariae Radix processed with wine) 2 qian, *Dan Pi* (Moutan Cortex) 2 qian.
Modification method: Add *Zhi Mu* (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) and *Huang Bo* (Phellodendri Cortex) to *Liu Wei Di Huang Tang* (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia). *Shu Di* (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) 8 qian, *Jiu Zheng Shan Yu Rou* (Corni Fructus steamed with wine) 2 qian, *Jiu Jin Dan Pi* (Moutan Cortex soaked in wine, remove woody core) 2 qian, *Yun Ling Shen* (Poria) 3 qian, *Tai Dang Shen* (Codonopsis Radix) 5 qian, *Sheng Shou Wu* (Polygoni Multiflori Radix) 4 qian, *Huai Shan Yao* (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) 4 qian, *Gan Cao* (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 1 qian, *Jin Yin Hua* (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) 2 qian, *Dong Sang Ye* (Mori Folium) 2 qian, *Yun Fu Ling* (Poria) 3 qian. The above formulas can be used universally for various types of throat conditions; they are largely similar with minor differences, essentially revolving around these herbs. Other herbs for modification based on symptoms are listed below for reference and use as appropriate.
For *Bai Hou* (White Membrane Throat) accompanied by slight yellowing, especially severe on the left side, add *Huang Lian* (Coptidis Rhizoma), *Niu Zi* (Arctii Fructus), and *Ling Yang Jiao* (Saiga Tataricae Cornu); for throat swelling, add *Ma Bo* (Lasiosphaeria/Fuligo Septica, a crucial herb in throat specialties; it must be decocted wrapped in silk gauze and tied securely to prevent a porridge-like consistency that is difficult to swallow), *Jin Yin Hua* (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), and *Chan Tui* (Cicadae Periostracum); for redness and swelling, add *Chi Shao* (Paeoniae Radix Rubra) and *Dou Gen* (Styphnolobii Radix); for bitter taste in the mouth, add *Huang Qin* (Scutellariae Radix); for thirst, add *Sheng Shi Gao* (Gypsum Fibrosum) and *Tian Hua Fen* (Trichosanthis Radix); for excessive phlegm, add *Zhe Bei Mu* (Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus), *Chuan Bei Mu* (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus), and *Fu Ling* (Poria); for excessive saliva, add *Jiang Can* (Bombyx Batryticatus); for headache, add *Fen Ge* (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) and *Ju Hua* (Chrysanthemi Flos); for constipation, add *Sheng Da Huang* (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma); if bowel movement does not occur, add *Xuan Ming Fen* (Mirabilitum) 3–4 fen, taken by dissolving in the medicine bowl without boiling. In severe cases of throat pain, initial symptoms often include chills and fever, which are not due to external contraction; thus, diaphoretic (sweat-inducing) drugs must be strictly avoided. If *Qiang Huo* (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), *Fang Feng* (Saposhnikoviae Radix), *Jing Jie* (Schizonepetae Spica), or *Su Ye* (Perillae Folium) are mistakenly administered, the swelling will worsen and the throat swelling will be difficult to resolve quickly. Herbs such as *Sheng Di*, *Xuan Shen* (Scrophulariae Radix), *Lian Qiao* (Forsythiae Fructus), *Mu Tong* (Akebiae Caulis), *Zhi Mu*, *Huang Bo*, *Tian Dong*, and *Mai Dong* (Ophiopogonis Radix) can all be kept as commonly used medicines.
Prepare *Shu Di* (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) 1 liang, *Tian Men Dong* (Asparagi Radix) 6 qian, *Tai Dang Shen* (Codonopsis Radix) 2 liang, *Da Sheng Di* (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) 6 qian, *Cun Mai Dong* (Ophiopogonis Radix) 6 qian; process into pills using honey. Take 5 qian per dose.
Find earthworms from within leek fields, crush them into a paste, mix with *She Xiang* (Moschus) and *Bing Pian* (Borneolum Syntheticum), and apply to the outside of the throat for immediate cure. If *Bing Pian* or *She Xiang* are unavailable, crushing and applying only earthworms (*Qu Chan*) is also effective.
Another prescription: Use 7 seeds of *Ba Dou* (Crotonis Fructus) and 8 fen of *Xi Xin* (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), grind together into a fine powder, wrap in cotton, and insert into the left nostril for left-sided throat pain, or the right nostril for right-sided throat pain. Remove immediately once pain ceases and swelling subsides.
Another prescription: Grind *Ya Zao* (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina) into a fine powder, mix with egg white, and apply to the neck. Reapply when dry.
