Whenever a woman suddenly faints before delivery, or when going into labor, suddenly experiences locked jaws, eyes rolling upward, and foaming at the mouth, it is all due to failing to observe dietary restrictions during pregnancy, indulging in rich and sweet foods, leading to stagnation of Qi in the five Zang organs and disharmony of the six Fu organs. Additionally, if the fetus becomes too large and effort is exerted too early, it causes fetal shock and sudden collapse. Treatment should employ Shou Tai Jin Ye Wan (Slimming Fetus Golden Liquid Pill), which can ensure safety for both mother and child.
Jin Ye Wan: Ram and ewe feces (burned until carbonized but retaining properties), Fei Sheng Mao (hair from the armpit, carbonized), Xue Yu (hair from a healthy person, carbonized) each 5 qian; Zaoshen Tu (Kitchen Hearth Earth) 1 qian; Sha Ren (Amomum Fruit) 5 fen; Hei Qian (Black Lead) 1 qian. Melt the lead in a crucible, mix with 1 qian of Mercury (Hydrargyrum), take out and grind into powder. Mix all powders together, form pills the size of mung beans using the corner of a zongzi leaf. In cases of the aforementioned symptoms as well as transverse or breech presentation, urgently swallow five pills with flowing water, ensuring the preservation of both mother and child.
In cases where true Yin is depleted and stagnant at the time of delivery, or in middle-aged women whose Jiao Gu (Pubic Symphysis/Crossbones) fails to open after cesarean section, leading to difficult labor, Kai Gu Qian Jin Bu Yi Tang (Bone-Opening Thousand Gold Unchanging Decoction) is suitable.
Kai Gu Fang: Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 6 qian; Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) 3 qian; Bai Gui Ban (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, aged/decayed) 3 qian; Bai Fa (Human Hair) one large ball; add one zhan of wine, decoct and take.
Jiu Ni Tang (Rescue Counter-Decoction): Treats postpartum mothers who are constitutionally deficient in Qi and Blood, where the fetus lacks strength to turn, resulting in hands or feet presenting first. Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) 1 liang; Dang Gui 3 liang; Chuan Xiong 2 liang; Hong Hua (Carthami Flos) 3 qian. Decoct in water and take quickly. If labor does not progress after a long time, decoct again and take again.
Du Shen Tang (Single Ginseng Decoction): With commentary. The primary formula for inducing labor. Ren Shen 2-3 qian, or 4-5 qian.
Commentary states: Ren Shen is indeed a wonderful product for inducing labor, but if used improperly, errors often occur without people realizing it. If uterine contractions have not yet arrived, and the fetus turns causing abdominal pain, people who do not understand this principle may think labor is imminent and brew Ginseng Decoction for the mother to drink to boost her strength, which is premature. If the mother is constitutionally deficient in Qi and Blood, there is benefit without harm. However, if applied to robust women whose dystocia is not due to deficiency, Ren Shen may consolidate fetal Qi, forcing it upward against the chest and heart, causing distension and failure to descend, thereby worsening dystocia. Since the onset of contractions, if the mother experiences lower back soreness, abdominal pain, tenesmus of the anus, and sensation of fire in the eyes, just as the fetus is emerging, only then should Ginseng Decoction be drunk, and consumed entirely at once. Is this not known to be too late and hasty? After delivery, when expelling blood stasis is required, the sharp power of Ren Shen causes the stasis to receive tonification, leading to stagnation and potentially ascending to rush the heart. Some use up to 1-2 liang, which requires extreme caution. Therefore, ancients did not use Ren Shen for postpartum conditions unless it was an emergency, and often combined it with Chuan Xiong and Dang Gui, indicating deep intent. Prepare high-quality Ren Shen 4-5 qian. If the mother is young and strong, and labor proceeds smoothly, Ginseng Decoction is unnecessary. For middle-aged mothers with excessive childbirth history, or those constitutionally thin, or experiencing difficult labor lasting days past the expected time, or having misused effort leading to fatigue and lack of strength to expel the fetus at the critical moment, Ren Shen 2-3 qian can be decocted and taken, naturally facilitating easy delivery. For ordinary births, fearing difficulty at term, one may pre-decoct 2-3 qian of Ren Shen, keep it warm in a double boiler, and upon rupture of membranes, let the mother drink two or three mouthfuls to boost strength, pause, then drink two or three more, administering frequently in small amounts merely to assist Qi for induction. Stop after birth; do not consume excessive amounts to invite fault. Alternatively, holding a piece of high-quality Ren Shen in the mouth generates fluids and assists Qi, which is also excellent. For transverse or inverted presentations, manual reduction techniques described earlier must be employed, followed by Ginseng Decoction to assist. Ren Shen tonifies Qi and lifts, preventing maternal exhaustion, and helps the fetus rotate into a favorable position for easier delivery.
Cui Sheng Wan Quan Tang (Labor-Inducing Ten-Thousand-Safety Decoction) (With Commentary): Ren Shen 3-5 qian (Greatly tonifies Yuan Qi as Sovereign); Dang Gui 3 qian (Greatly tonifies Ying Blood as Minister, remove root tips); Chuan Xiong 1 qian (Enters Liver to relieve stagnation, contains slight lifting nature so descending drugs gain efficacy); Tao Ren (Persicae Semen) 13 grains (leave skin and tips... Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Hong Hua... Take before meals).
Commentary states: Women's labor concerns the lives of mother and child, a matter of life and death in an instant, hence many formulas were created by ancients. Childbirth severely injures Qi and Blood; dystocia often stems from Qi and Blood deficiency. Postpartum diseases belong to severe Qi and Blood depletion, yet postpartum deficiencies arise from prenatal conditions. Unfortunately, formulas like Fo Shou San, Tu Nao Wan, and Kui Hua Yi Mu involve activating blood, smoothing Qi, lubricating the fetus, breaking stasis, warming and unblocking orifices to create momentum for expulsion, completely ignoring the source of this momentum. For mothers with robust energy, these guides facilitate easy birth; however, if Qi and Blood are insufficient, although there is the merit of guiding induction, there is no power to drive the medicinal effect, what good is that! Regarding holding Shi Yan (Stone Swallow Stone) or applying Bi Ma (Ricinus Seed) to feet, assuming real-excess smooth labor borrows this condition, waiting for the time, if spirit and Qi/Blood are extremely depleted, using such perfunctory formulas exhausts internal spirit, like scratching through boots. Forcing induction without regulating Qi and Blood provides no tool for operation, retaining only empty fame without practical effect, costing lives in an instant, how painful! Only Da Sheng San has a balanced prescription, but it is only suitable for regulation before labor. Sheng Hua Tang has deep intent but is only suitable for regulation after labor, not for emergency induction. Now, Wan Quan Tang synthesizes the intent of two formulas into one, aiming for absolute safety, proven effective repeatedly, thus named Wan Quan. First, regulate and tonify Qi and Blood, assisted by dispersing stasis, descending, and warming the center. With strengthened Qi and Blood, it naturally performs vigorous induction, this is "induction without forcing." Thus, Ren Shen and Dang Gui are Sovereigns to cultivate Qi and Blood. Add small amounts of Tao Ren, Chuan Xiong, Hei Jiang (Charred Ginger), Zhi Cao (Honey-fried Licorice), Jiu Hong Hua (Wine-treated Safflower) to warm the center and disperse stasis. Niu Xi Shao (Tip of Achyranthes Root) and Gui Xin (Cinnamon Heart) warm and guide downward, preventing adverse rushing to the heart. Not only is induction miraculous, but postpartum stasis is avoided, preventing hundred diseases. Tonifying with warmth prevents stagnation; warming with tonification prevents collapse. Slight lifting and heavy descending allows Qi to be lifted and easily descend; descending with lifting ensures stasis removal and new blood return. More tonifying than purging removes evil while sparing Yuan Qi; less bitter and more sweet drives stasis while maintaining harmony. Is this not the ultimate safe induction?
Cui Sheng Fo Shou San: Quan Dang Gui (Whole Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 1 liang; Chuan Xiong 5 qian; Gui Ban (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum) 7 qian (roasted with vinegar/vinegar-roasted thoroughly). Decoct in water and take. One variation removes Gui Ban and adds Yi Mu Cao (Leonuri Herba)...
San He Ji Sheng Tang: Treats difficult labor, not delivering after 1-2 days; taking this naturally facilitates rotation and descent. Dang Gui 3 qian; Chuan Xiong 2 qian; Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus, bran-fried) 2 qian; Zi Su 8 fen; Da Fu Pi (Arecae Pericarpium, washed with ginger juice) 1.5 qian; Gan Cao 7 fen. Decoct in water and take when lower back pain is severe, resulting in immediate delivery.
Yu Jiao San (Fish Collodion Powder): Treats dystocia. Yu Jiao (Collodium Corii Asini) 5 qian, stir-fried with flour until pearl-like, remove flour, grind collagen into fine powder, take with hot wine, delivers shortly after.
Cui Sheng Jian Yi Fang (Simple Labor-Inducing Formula): When medication is inconvenient during labor, tear off the front yellow paper cover of the current year's almanac (Shi Xian Shu), printed with Imperial Astronomical Bureau approval and official seals, without others seeing. Burn to ash, mix ash with one cup of wine, give to the parturient to swallow, resulting in immediate delivery.
Alternatively, request a dispatch stick from local officials (Prefecture, Zhou, or County). Write the name of the Magistrate in cinnabar on the stick...
Cui Sheng Ru Yi San: Can be taken when lower back pain occurs during labor. Ren Shen 1 qian; Ru Xiang (Olibanum) 1 qian; Chen Sha (Cinnabar) 5 fen. Grind to powder. At labor, mix with one egg white, dilute with fresh ginger juice, cool and take. For transverse or breech presentation, corrects immediately, ensuring safety for mother and child.
Cui Sheng Xiong Gui Tang (i.e., Fo Shou San, but differs in decoction method, hence also named Cui Sheng Xiong Gui Tang): Treats dystocia caused by external factors disturbing the fetus... Transverse... Locked jaw...
One woman did not deliver after three days; added 2 liang of Yi Mu Cao to this formula, decocted with equal parts wine and water, took it and delivered immediately. Someone else used only this base formula to treat transverse and breech presentations; frequent consumption led to smooth delivery, proving effective repeatedly.
Cong Bai Yi Mu Tang: Treats dystocia. Yi Mu Cao 5 qian; Cong Tou (Scallion Head) 3 qian; Wen Yin (Pattern Silver) ingot weighing 4 liang, 2 bowls of water. Decoct to 1 bowl, take and deliver immediately.
Shen Zuo Yin: Induces labor very quickly; treats transverse, inverted, and breech presentations, and retained dead fetus. Fresh Zuo Tree thorns, finger-sized, one handful (wash clean, chop; species with one leaf one thorn are common everywhere); Gan Cao 5 qian (one version says 5 cun); Xin Ji Shui (Freshly drawn water) 1.5 bowls. Put water and herbs in a new clay jar, seal tightly with three layers of paper, decoct over mild to medium heat to 80% volume. Take warm, do not decoct dregs. When feeling abdominal pain, heavy lower back, and desire to go to the birthing mat, take one zhan of this medicine warm; feel openness in the chest. If thirsty, drink another zhan; feeling heaviness below indicates delivery, with no risk of dystocia or transverse/inverted presentation. For transverse, breech, or inverted, correction occurs within three doses; dead fetus in uterus expelled within three doses, preserving both mother and child, most miraculous.
Once a woman had a transverse birth, hand presenting first, leading to spleen swelling, considering amputation to save life, repeated labor-inducing drugs failed. Boiled this medicine strongly, gave one bowl; she revived instantly. Gave another bowl; after short sleep, she suddenly said her joints were disassembled, asked to be helped up. Blood and water gushed down, dead fetus extracted effortlessly. This formula saves lives with 100% accuracy. However, according to *Shi Shi Mi Lu*, it should be used with caution. See commentary in the Modified Shen Zuo Yin formula below.
Mi Lu Jia Wei Shen Zuo Yin (With Commentary): Treats fetal head reaching the cervix but not delivering for a long time, due to Jiao Gu non-opening. Zuo Mu Zhi (Zanthoxylum/Ziziphus branch - context implies Zuo tree branch) 1 liang (or 5 qian); Dang Gui 2 liang; Chuan Xiong 1 liang; Ren Shen 1 liang. Decoct in water and take. If fetal head reaches cervix and does not deliver, after taking this, a loud sound will likely occur, and the baby will be born. Truly a miraculous and divine formula.
Commentary states: If the fetal head does not descend, absolutely do not use Zuo Mu Zhi. This herb specifically opens the Jiao Gu. If the fetal head has not turned and the cervix opens first, it is a path to death. Thus, this formula can only be used after the fetal head reaches the cervix. I believe the previous formula using only Zuo Mu Zhi for transverse/dystocia, stating to take warm when desiring to sit for labor, risks being too early. It is better to wait until the fetal head reaches the cervix and remains undelivered for a long time before taking it.
Ru Zhu Dan (Also named Kai Gu Gao/Paste): Treats dystocia and Jiao Gu non-opening. Ru Xiang (Olibanum) any amount. Grind finely on specific dates (March 3, May 5, July 7). Form pills the size of wu zi (walnut seeds) using pig heart blood. Coat with Zhu Sha (Cinnabar), dry and store. For dystocia, dissolve one pill in cool wine and take; if not delivered, take again. Or use seven lotus leaf stalks, decoct 2 zhan of water to 1 zhan, dissolve pill and take, miraculous effect.
Fu Long Gan: Treats transverse/inverted dystocia. Fu Long Gan (Earth opposite the hearth, old and red is best). Quickly grind to fine powder, take with warm wine...
Er Tui San: Treats transverse/inverted dystocia. She Tui (Snake Skin) one whole strip; Po Gu Zi (Psoraleae Fructus) one sheet. Place in new clay bottle, seal with salt mud, burn until carbonized, grind to powder. Decoct in Ru Xiang (Olibanum) soup, take 1 qian mixed. Three consecutive doses yield miraculous results. *Ben Cao Gang Mu* suggests decocting in Yu Bai Pi (Ulmi Cortex) soup, take 1 qian. I believe this formula is harsh and should be used with caution.
Jiao Kui San: Treats transverse/inverted dystocia. E Jiao (Collodium Corii Asini) 1 liang (stir-fried with Ge Fen [Calamina] until pearl-like); Huang Kui Zi (Abutilonis Semen) 1 liang. Take 4 qian per dose, decoct in water.
Cui Sheng Ru Shen San (Also named Hei Shen San/Black Divine Powder): Treats transverse/inverted labor, and also treats menorrhagia and metrorrhagia. Bai Cao Shuang (Soot from chimney) (Blood stops when black, excessive amniotic fluid, usable for induction); Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) equal parts (do not expose to fire). Grind to powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mix with child's urine and vinegar to form paste, add boiling water to adjust. Take three consecutive doses to consolidate blood and prevent blood depletion. One variation adds Hua Shi (Talcum), take 3 qian per dose.
Cui Sheng Ru Sheng San: Treats dried amniotic fluid, fetus inactive in uterus, or bloody discharge blocking the pathway causing dystocia. Huang Kui Hua (Yellow Hibiscus Flower) 2 qian, dry-roast and grind to powder, take with hot water, miraculous. If there is bleeding, dry uterine lining, severe dystocia pain, take three doses together. After a while, abdominal Qi relaxes, fetus slides, delivering immediately. If no flower, use Huang Shu Kui Zi (Yellow Abelmoschus Seed) ground to powder 2 qian, take with wine. If dead fetus retained, decoct Hong Hua (Carthami Flos) in wine and take.
Empirical Formula: Use 49 or 30 Huang Shu Kui (Yellow Abelmoschus) seeds. Song goes: Thirty golden Bing Zi seeds, ground fine with wine for emergencies. Life hangs by a thread in an instant, enabling relatives not to weep.
Cui Sheng Qi Dou Shen Yan Fang (Labor-Inducing Smallpox-Reviving Miraculous Formula): Treats dystocia and smallpox that fail to erupt or fill. Shan Yang Xue (Goat Blood) 7-8 fen or 1 qian. Dissolve blood in wine and take; delivers instantly, harms no one, and prevents postpartum blood stasis and syncope. Some say this blood still gathers at the infant's crown.
