Restlessness and crying at night in infants are caused by four factors: cold, heat, fright, and stagnation. A careful examination is required to determine the specific cause for appropriate symptomatic treatment. Crying due to cold arises from cold spleen qi; yin predominates at night, causing abdominal pain, manifesting as a cyan complexion, cold hands and feet, and a curved waist while crying. It is advisable to use equal parts of Zhi Huangqi (Prepared Astragali Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), and Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) ground into powder. Apply this to the nipple for the infant to suck. Crying due to heat results from excessive heart fire, presenting with a red face, warm hands and feet, hot breath, an arched back while crying, and intensified crying upon seeing light or fire. Use Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis), Fushen (Poria Cum Radix Pini), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Dengxincao (Junci Medulla), Chen Sha (Cinnabar), and Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) each one qian, decocted in water for oral administration. Crying due to food stagnation is characterized by pain from retained milk and food, crying without weeping, a straight continuous sound, and absence of tears. Use Sheng Maiya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus) and Shanzha Tan (Crataegi Fructus Carbonized) each one qian, decocted in water for oral administration. Crying due to fright stems from insufficient heart qi and unsettled spirit, manifesting as weeping without crying, continuous sounds, and abundant tears. Treatment should address the fright condition using Tianwang Buxin Dan (Emperor of Heaven's Tonic for the Heart Pill). For external treatment, mix equal parts of Zaoshintu (Furnacis Argilla) and Qiuyin Ni (Lumbricus Terrenus) into powder, dilute with water, and apply to the infant's vertex and soles of the feet for optimal effect.
Another prescription for internal heat and restlessness causing night crying: Clean 49 Chan Tui (Bombyx Batryticatus), removing heads, feet, and wings, using only the posterior half. Add Fushen (Poria Cum Radix Pini) two qian, grind finely into powder, divide into four doses, and administer with Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis) decoction. The condition resolves upon completion of the medication. During preparation, women and children must be excluded from viewing.
Another prescription for incessant night crying: Grind Qian Niu Zi (Pharbitidis Semen) finely, mix with water, and apply to the umbilicus to stop crying immediately.
Use Niu Huang (Bovis Calculus) and Chen Sha (Cinnabar) each five li, refined and ground into powder. Mix with Bohe Tang (Menthae Haplocalycis Decoction) and a small amount of wine for oral administration to stop crying. Applying chicken droppings to the umbilicus is also effective; use female chicken droppings for male infants and male chicken droppings for female infants.
Another prescription for fright-induced crying: Use Deng Xin Cao Hui (Ash of Junci Medulla) five fen, mixed with Bohe Tang (Menthae Haplocalycis Decoction) for oral administration, yielding miraculous effects.
Failure to urinate shortly after birth is attributed to fetal heat flowing downward. Use Dao Chi San (Guide Out Red Powder): Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) each three fen, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) one fen, and Danyezhu (Bambusae Folium) five fen. In cases of severe heat, use Ba Zheng San (Eight-Herb Rectifying Powder): Wei Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma Calcined), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Huashi (Talcum), Zhiren (Gardeniae Fructus), Qumai (Dianthi Herba), Pianxu (Spermatum Lychnidis), and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) in equal parts, with Dengxincao (Junci Medulla) as a guiding herb, decocted in water for oral administration.
Another prescription: Decoct Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) and Qierdi (Solanis Melongena Pedunculus) for oral administration to restore urination immediately.
Another method: Mix equal parts of Congzhi (Allii Fistulosi Juice) and Ren Ruji (Humanis Lac) thoroughly, apply to the infant's mouth, and urination will resume shortly.
