The insects found within the stems of *Xanthium strumarium* (Cocklebur) are best caught within five days after the Start of Autumn, regardless of quantity. They should be pounded into an extremely fine paste, then mixed with an appropriate amount of *Fritillaria thunbergii* Bulb (Tuber of Thunberg's Fritillary) powder, which has been ground to a very fine consistency. The mixture is further pounded and formed into pills the size of mung beans. When applying, flatten the pill temporarily and place it on the apex of the carbuncle, covering it externally with a plaster. The next day, the toxin will be drawn out onto the plaster, and the condition will heal.
Another prescription: Dry cow dung until dry, grind it into powder, mix with water, and apply to the affected area. The toxicity will gradually dissipate and not invade the Zang-Fu organs.
Yet another prescription: Take one preserved plum, one lychee, and one qian (approx. 3.73g) of cinnabar (silver朱, red mercury sulfide). Pound them together into a paste and apply to the affected area.
Yet another prescription: Take several black bricks from a long-used latrine pit, grind them finely with water, decoct them with raw *Glycyrrhiza uralensis* Root and Rhizome (Licorice) to make a concentrated juice. Strain the dregs and drink the liquid. After ingestion, if black fluid is passed in the stool, the disease will heal.
Although the five types of ding sores correspond to the five Zang organs, they are essentially disorders characterized by pure fire. The internal treatment method lies in assessing the severity and employing sweating, purging, clearing heat, resolving toxicity, dispersing, or eliminating methods. However, medication must be guided by pulse and symptoms: for floating and rapid pulses, use dispersing methods; for deep and solid pulses, use purging methods; for excess conditions in both exterior and interior, resolve the exterior and attack the interior simultaneously; for numbness or severe pain, or lack of pain, moxibustion is suitable, combined with anti-toxin measures. Do not apply treatments indiscriminately or incorrectly, avoiding both excess and deficiency.
When ding sores first appear, sweating should be induced first. If other prescriptions are mistakenly used to induce sweating, it will not only be ineffective but may also cause "Zouhuang" (spread of toxin to the heart/mind). Therefore, Chan Su Pill (Toad Venom Pill, see Vol. 11, Formulas for Carbuncles and Toxins) must be used. Induce sweating according to the method; if sweat is not fully expressed, promote sweating further with scallion wine. For severe toxicity, administer another dose. If after inducing sweating the toxic heat persists, accompanied by aversion to cold and high fever, Wu Wei Xiao Du Yin (Five-Ingredient Decoction for Eliminating Toxins) is suitable: use San Ye Jin Yin Hua (Honeysuckle Flower) 3 qian, Ye Ju Hua (Wild Chrysanthemum Flower), Pu Gong Ying (Dandelion), Zi Hua Di Ding (Viola philippica), and Zi Bei Tian Kui Zi (Seed of Kochia Scoparia or related species) each 1.5 qian. Decoct with wine and water, and induce sweating again. If there is fever, thirst, constipation, and a deep, solid pulse, Huang Lian Jie Du Tang (Coptis Decoction for Resolving Toxins, see Vol. 11, Supplementary Formulas) should be taken, added with Sheng Da Huang (Raw Rhubarb Root) 1.5 qian and five scallion heads to clear heat. For mild cases, follow various simple prescriptions to induce sweating.
After the ding sore ulcerates, if residual toxins remain uneliminated, causing heat in the five centers (palms, soles, and chest), Ren Shen Qing Shen Tang (Ginseng Decoction for Clearing the Spirit) should be taken to clear and resolve the remaining heat.
