The mass gradually enlarges, becoming soft rather than hard. Medical texts state that there are five types: those with unchanged skin color are Rou Ying (Meat Goiter); those with exposed tendons and vessels are Jin Ying (Tendon Goiter); those with intersecting tendons and vessels appearing purple-red are Xue Ying (Blood Goiter); those that fluctuate in size with worry and anger are Qi Ying (Qi Goiter); and those that are hard and do not resolve are Shi Ying (Stone Goiter). Some may be as large as a bowl, some long and hanging down. There are also various types such as Fen Liu (Powder Cyst), Lou Liu (Leaking Cyst), and Shi Liu (Louse Cyst). Additionally, Yang Mao Ding (Wool Carbuncle) resembles a goiter in shape; its treatment methods are found in the preceding section on "Carbuncles and Sores."
Xiao Ying Wu Hai Yin (Goiter-Resolving Five Seas Drink): Kelp (Haidai, 海带), Sargassum (Haizao, 海藻), Laminaria (Kunbu, 昆布), Clam Shell (Haige, 海蛤), and Cuttlebone (Haipiaoxiao, 海螵蛸), each 5 qian. Decoct in water and drink as tea; it is very effective.
Another prescription: Cherry pits, ground with good vinegar and applied externally to resolve the mass; highly effective in the early stages.
Another prescription: Parasitic plants growing on pomegranate trees, ground with vinegar and rubbed on the affected area; extremely effective, especially for those growing on the neck.
Another prescription: Phellodendron Bark (Chuan Huangbai, 川黄柏) and Sargassum (Haizao, 海藻), each 1 liang, ground into fine powder and stored. Take 5 fen per dose, place on the palm, and lick with the tongue. Apply three to five times daily to resolve the mass. Especially effective for those on the neck.
Another prescription: Scutellaria Barbata (Huang Yaozi, 黄药子) 10 liang and strong liquor 3 jin. Place together in a bottle, seal tightly, and simmer over chaff fire for one shichen (or steam in a pot for half a day). After cooling the bottle in cold water, wait seven days, then drink small amounts occasionally throughout the day. Ensure the effect of the alcohol is continuous. Effective regardless of location. While drinking, frequently check with a mirror; stop drinking once resolved, as excessive consumption may cause the neck to become too thin. Huang Yaozi, also known as Huang Yao, is best sourced from Wanzhou, Jiangxi. It is also produced in Qingyuan Prefecture, Guangxi.
Every night before sleep, apply freshly cooked hot rice to the lesion. Replace with fresh rice when it cools. Apply three times nightly. With prolonged use, it will heal naturally. This method is effective for newly formed Rou Liu (Meat Tumor) the size of a small marble. Do not underestimate it.
Simmer Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草) into a paste. Use a brush to paint around the circumference of the tumor. Separately, grind Genkwa Flower (Yuanhua, 芫花), Great Euphorbia (Daji, 大戟), and Kansui Root (Gansui, 甘遂) in equal parts into powder, and mix with vinegar. Using a separate clean brush, apply this mixture inside the circle drawn by the licorice paste. Ensure a gap between the two applications, as their properties are contrary; do not mix them. The next day after application, the tumor should shrink. Repeat this process three to four times for cure. After healing, consult a renowned physician for internal medicine to dissipate residual pathogenic factors and prevent recurrence.
