At the onset, there is headache, alternating chills and fever (Han Re), and red spots resembling rashes appear on the anterior chest at the heart region and the posterior back. First, puncture with a needle to extract the wool-like fibers. Then, take two qian of refined Realgar powder (Xionghuang), wrap it in blue cloth, dip it in hot distilled liquor (Shaojiu), and rub it in circular motions around the wound on the anterior chest, one or two cun away from the sore, gradually rubbing into the sore opening. The wool-like fibers will then migrate to the posterior back. Rub the back in the same manner as before; all wool-like fibers will be extracted onto the cloth, which should then be buried in the soil. Internally, Juhua Yin (Chrysanthemum Decoction), Dingding Yin (Arnebiae Radix Decoction) (both see previous sections), or Huxin San (Heart-Protecting Powder) (see formulas for carbuncles and sores) may be used.
This condition suddenly presents with a blister shaped like a tumor containing wool-like fibers, also known as Yang Ding (Sheep Carbuncle). Its initial signs include headache or alternating chills and fever. Grind equal parts of Black Soybean (Heidou) and Buckwheat (Qiaomai) into powder, puncture the lesion, and apply the powder. Healing occurs when the fibers fall out. Internally, Juhua Yin (Chrysanthemum Decoction) is also effective.
Drinking one large bowl of pure Sesame Oil (MAYOU) will stop the symptoms. Drinking Rapeseed Oil (Caiziyou) is even better.
When Ding Du (Carbuncle Toxin) causes severe swelling, pain, delirium, or even unconsciousness, it is called Zou Huang (Running Yellow/Spreading Toxin). Immediately administer juice extracted from crushed Banana Root (Bajiaogen); life can be restored instantly. Alternatively, administering Juhua Yin (Chrysanthemum Decoction) or Dingding Yin (Arnebiae Radix Decoction) as described previously is also highly effective.
Severe cases of Ding Du may recur after apparent healing because the root of the toxin has not been expelled. If not treated urgently, subsequent recurrences will have deeper roots and become difficult to cure. Take one seed of Castor Bean (Bimazi, de-oiled) and one fen of Frankincense (Ruxiang, de-oiled), pound them into a paste, mix with rice flour to form a cake, and apply it to the lesion. After a short time, the toxin root will naturally emerge.
Another prescription: Use Scallion White (Congbai) mixed with refined honey, applied after puncturing the carbuncle. Within the time it takes a person to walk five li, the root will naturally emerge. Additionally, the Hong Gao Yao (Red Plaster) formula from the section on various formulas for carbuncles and sores is most effective for extracting the toxin root.
This sore is extremely toxic; improper treatment often leads to chronic, incurable conditions. It is strictly contraindicated to take Calomel (Qingfen); if taken, the toxin lodges in the sinews and bones, making eradication difficult, and it may cause infertility. If already ingested, treat with the Qingfen Detoxification Formula (see the section on rescuing from various toxins).
Hongzao Wan (Red Date Pill): Take three jin of Red Dates (Hongzao), boil them using Chinese Fir wood (Shanmu) as fuel. After cooking, peel and remove the pits. Take abundant charcoal from burnt Chinese Fir wood, grind it into fine powder, mix with the date pulp, and pound into pills the size of marbles. Eat freely every day without interruption. Even if toxin sores cover the whole body, or if ingestion of Calomel (Qingfen) and other mineral/cinnabar drugs has led to chronic condensation toxins causing perforation of the palate or nose with persistent ulceration over many years, this formula yields miraculous effects, being stable and effective. This is the primary formula for treating Meiyang Jiedu (Syphilitic Condensation Toxins). Take it for one to two months after healing to eradicate the root. Red Dates detoxify minerals and cinnabar; Chinese Fir expels damp-heat invasion, hence its rapid efficacy. Avoid vinegar, chili peppers (also known as Qingjiao), and all stimulating foods (Fa Wu) for half a year. Externally apply Xama San (Toad Powder).
Another prescription: Take one liang of Smilax Glabra Rhizome (Tufuling), one qian each of Akebia Caulis (Mutong), Dictamnus Cortex (Baixianpi), and Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng), two qian each of Chaenomeles Fruit (Xuan Mugua), Coix Seed (Yiyiren), and Honeysuckle Flower (Jinyinhua), and four fen of Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit (Zaogaozi). Decoct in water and take orally. Take one dose daily until healed. Externally apply Xama San (Toad Powder) (see formulas for carbuncles and sores). Regardless of duration or severity... Another prescription: Take one liang of Rhubarb (Dahuang), three qian each of Pangolin Scales (Chuanshanjia, stir-fried), Magnolia Bark (Chuan N Houpo), Angelica Dahurica Root (Baizhi), Bignonia Seed (Da Fengzi Ren), Sichuan Pepper (Huajiao), and Licorice Root (Gancao). Decoct in water, mix with wine, and take orally. The toxin qi exits through the stool; full recovery occurs in seven days. Dietary restrictions are the same as above, except tea and toads are not restricted. Regardless of severity, it has proven miraculously effective in repeated trials; do not underestimate it.
Another, washing prescription: Take two qian each of Raw Licorice Root (Sheng Gancao), Honeysuckle Flower (Jinyinhua), Atractylodes Rhizome (Cangzhu), Angelica Dahurica Root (Baizhu), Agastache Herb (Huoxiang), and Sophora Flower (Huaihua). Decoct together and use the liquid for washing. For mild cases, internally take the previous formula and externally wash with this medicine for immediate healing.
Prevention of Meiyang Chuang (Syphilis) Formula: Anyone close to a patient with Meiyang Chuang who serves them is liable to infection. Use five fen each of Realgar (Xionghuang) and Sichuan Pepper (Chuanjiao, seeds removed)... [text cuts off] down.
