Jiu Chun Tang (Rescue Lip Decoction): Radix Violae Yedoensis (Zihua Diding) and Flos Lonicerae Japonicae (Jinyinhua), each 1 liang; Semen Ginkgo (Baiguo), 20 pieces; Raw Radix Glycyrrhizae (Sheng Gancao) and Cortex Morindae Officinalis (Zhimu), each 3 qian. Decoct in water and take orally. For the most severe cases, three doses will surely cure it. This formula is effective for treating carbuncles and toxic sores on the head, face, and corners of the mouth, with even better results for lip carbuncles.
Another prescription: A person had seven carbuncles growing on the lips and mouth, with the head and face swollen as large as a dou (a unit of volume), accompanied by chest oppression and unconsciousness, to which various medicines were ineffective. Later, someone said: this is called "Seven Stars Chasing the Moon." Apply crushed Ascaris lumbricoides (Hui Chong) externally to the lesion. Within moments, yellow fluid flowed from the wound, the swelling subsided, consciousness returned, and full recovery occurred the next day. If Ascaris lumbricoides is unavailable, use 1 qian of Lumbricus (Wugu Chong) (roasted on a tile and ground into powder), 3 fen of Alumen (Bai Fan), and 3 fen of Toad Venom (Chansu). Dissolve in distilled spirits (Shaojiu), mix well, and apply to the carbuncle. After a short while, the carbuncle will also break open, discharge toxic fluid, and heal.
Another prescription: Whenever a carbuncle grows on the lips, observe if there are purple veins in the popliteal fossa (the bend of the thigh). Puncture them with a silver needle to release blood, and it will heal. Some people do not know where the carbuncle is located but feel extreme itching inside the lips, followed quickly by swelling, hardness, and severe pain on half of the face. If purple veins appear at the back of the leg, puncturing them yields immediate effect.
Another prescription: Apply blood from the comb of a rooster directly onto the lesion; its efficacy is miraculous.
Another prescription: Take one large Bufo bufo gargarizans (Da Xia Ma), extract its liver, and apply it to the lesion for immediate resolution. It also treats carbuncles on the face and duikou carbuncles (carbuncles opposite the navel or on the back).
Another prescription: Use fresh Corbicula fluminea (Sheng Xian), remove the shell, crush and blend, then apply. It dissipates immediately.
Another prescription: Take a dark-colored grass carp (Wuse Cao Yu), remove scales, take the skin, slice it, and apply. Replace when dry. After dozens of changes, the lesion will break open and heal.
This type of carbuncle spreads fastest. If it arises on the foot, the red thread gradually extends to the umbilicus; if on the hand, it extends to the heart region; if on the lips or face, it extends to the throat. Once it reaches the throat, it is incurable. For carbuncles on the hands and feet, tightly bind hair around the limb one or two cun away from the lesion. Pierce the end of the hair bundle, or burn the end of the red thread using a lamp flame or moxa fire. The red thread will recede and the condition will heal. If it does not recede, burn again until it disperses. The efficacy is miraculous. Alternatively, treat according to the previous formulas mentioned above.
The carbuncle resembles the width of a leek leaf, one to two cun in length, with flesh appearing purple-black. Avoid puncturing with needles. Administer Cong Bai Fan San (Green Onion and Alum Powder) orally, and apply thin chicken manure externally. It will heal promptly. Delaying treatment allows the toxin to enter the heart, leading to death.
