This pill clears pathogenic heat, guides stagnant qi, and moves blood stasis; it is the holy medicine for treating dysentery, with miraculous effects upon consumption. The prescription consists of: Chuan Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) 1 liang 2 qian, Guang Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) 8 qian (do not stir-fry over fire), Shanzha Rou (Crataegi Fructus flesh) 1 liang 2 qian (stir-fried), Chuan Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, coarse skin removed, stir-fried with ginger juice), and Xiao Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, vinegar-fried) each 8 qian, Sheng Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma raw), Jian... wrapped in Lotus Leaf (Note: Original text appears fragmented here). These two prescriptions must be prepared in advance to assist patients at any time, rendering boundless merit.
Additionally, on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, select intact water chestnuts (Biqie), wash and dry them thoroughly without damaging them, place them in a bottle, immerse them in good liquor (Shaojiu), seal tightly with yellow mud, and store. When encountering patients, take one or two pieces, have them chew thoroughly, consume on an empty stomach, and still use the original liquor to swallow them down; this is extremely effective.
Jinyinhua Teng (Lonicerae Japonicae Caulis), decocted into a concentrated juice and taken orally, is extremely effective.
Alternatively, decoct dried persimmon cakes (Shibing) into soup and drink several times daily.
Burn eggplant roots (Qiegen) to ash while preserving their medicinal nature, mix equally with Shiliupi (Pomegranate Peel) into powder, and take mixed with sugar water; recovery will follow immediately.
Alternatively, decoct air-dried old radish leaves (Luobo Ye) into soup and take orally; dysentery stops immediately.
Alternatively, crush fresh old ginger (La Jiang), fine tea leaves (Cha Ye), and Chinese chives with roots (Jiucai) together to extract juice; the three ingredients are taken by flushing with warm wine.
You Danggui (Angelica sinensis oil-treated) 1 liang, Zhike (Aurantii Fructus) 3 fen. If rapid effect is desired, add Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) 1 qian for red dysentery, or Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) 3 fen for white dysentery; this method is infallible and miraculous. For Jin Kou Li (dysentery with inability to eat) presenting as red dysentery, add Xian Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis) 3 qian; for Jin Kou Bai Li, add Chao Guya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus, stir-fried) 8 qian; taking more will lead to self-healing.
Commentary: Dysentery arises from stagnation (Yu) and dryness, and ultimately stems from deficiency (Xu). Hence, there is tenesmus (Li Ji Hou Zhong - urgent desire to defecate with heavy sensation in the anus but difficulty passing stool), wanting to pass stool but unable to do so. This differs significantly from treating watery diarrhea. Treating diarrhea favors astringency/stopping, whereas treating dysentery favors purgation/drainage. However, physicians often use Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) to scour away filth, unaware that this depletes the patient's essence and fluids (Zhigao). Those robust may see temporary relief, but complications arise frequently; those frail will inevitably suffer worsening conditions, which is terrifying! Moreover, Dahuang can only treat Heat Dysentery and Excess Dysentery, not Cold Dysentery or Deficiency Dysentery. Negligence leads to worsening, worsening leads to danger, and danger leads to death; I have witnessed many victims. Thus, carefully pondering the cause of disease lies in stagnation and dryness, and contemplating the treatment method should involve dispersing stagnation and moistening dryness. You Danggui is a Qi-moving herb within Blood herbs; its taste is pungent, and pungency can moisten. Its nature is mild and peaceful, so excessive use is permissible. *Bencao Congxin* states: "It excels at lubricating the intestines; avoid if diarrhea exists." Here, we precisely utilize its moistening property. Moistening eliminates dysentery, which is a superb method. Furthermore, the root of dysentery pathology is stagnation; Danggui can disperse this stagnation. The root of dysentery pathology is deficiency; Danggui can tonify this deficiency. This prescription is a fairy medicine for treating dysentery. Regardless of Yin/Yang or Excess/Deficiency patterns, use it boldly, and efficacy will be seen. Danggui is slightly warm, suitable for Cold Dysentery, yet for Heat Dysentery, it does not aid Fire pathogens, especially when combined with Huanglian, where they assist each other, leaving no doubt. Danggui tonifies, suitable for Deficiency Dysentery, yet for Excess Dysentery, it does not hinder the expulsion of external pathogens. The term "Excess" refers to symptomatic excess, not constitutional fullness. Symptoms may occasionally present as excess, but the human body is invariably deficient. Supporting the Righteous Qi (Zheng Qi) eliminates Pathogenic Factors (Xie Qi), which is even more wonderful. Fearing the force may not reach the Fu organs, add Zhike to widen the Large Intestine, thereby eliminating tenesmus; this is infallible and repeatedly tested. However, Zhike has a potent force, like crashing through walls; do not use heavily to avoid damaging Yuan Qi. Red dysentery sometimes involves Blood Deficiency rather than Heat; White dysentery sometimes involves Qi Deficiency rather than Cold. Simply omit Huanglian for Blood Dysentery, and taking more leads to self-healing; add Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 3 qian for Qi Dysentery to cure. Regarding other cases such as constipation due to Shanghan (Cold Damage), use You Danggui 1 liang and Damaren (Cannabis Semen) 8 qian, plus yin-nourishing and clearing tonics; bowel movement will naturally occur. Avoid Dahuang strictly. Please inform others; this is a merit that costs no money.
Commentary: For treating dysentery with repeated success, none surpasses the formula recorded in Volume 7 of Dysentery Formulas: Heavily use Danggui, Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Luobozzi (Brassicae Rapae Fructus); lightly use Zhike, Binglang (Arecae Semen), Cheqian (Plantaginis Semen), and Gancao. This formula is extremely miraculous.
