Postpartum women may experience dryness of breast milk after suffering from measles. This is due to excessive Heart Fire (Heart Fire) scorching and depleting the source of body fluids (Jin Ye). The urgent task at this time is solely to nourish the blood; one must not administer harsh medications that would obstruct the source of lactation.
Breast milk is formed from body fluids. After childbirth, women have lost a significant amount of blood. Coupled with the scorching effect of measles fire, the blood becomes depleted and body fluids dry up, resulting in the exhaustion of breast milk. It is appropriate to nourish the blood to nourish the source of generation and transformation. One must absolutely avoid recklessly using harsh tonifying medicines, which would block the source like a surging spring. It is suitable to use Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) [see Article 25] added with Mutong (Akebia Caulis) as the main treatment.
What causes generalized edema? It is solely because Qi and Blood are weak after measles. This condition is never seen in infants or young noblewomen, but is common among the elderly and women.
Generalized edema after measles is rare in children, occurring mostly in the elderly and women. This is likely because the elderly inherently suffer from Qi and Blood deficiency. Combined with the consumption of blood by measles fire, generalized edema occurs after the eruption of the rash. It is suitable to treat with Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) [see Article 25] combined with Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) [see Article 72], removing Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), and adding Yiyiren (Coicis Semen) and Tiantingli (Semen Lepidii). If a woman suffers from generalized edema after measles, it is certainly because during the initial fever stage, while the rash was emerging or had just emerged, her menstruation occurred simultaneously, causing a heavy loss of Yin Blood. Thus, generalized edema appears after measles. If there are no signs of residual heat or constipation, one should use Yangrong Tang (Nourishing the Vigor Decoction) or Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) [see Article 25], or Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) [see Article 72], all with a large addition of Tiantingli for treatment.
Yangrong Tang: Treats Spleen and Lung Qi Deficiency, insufficient Ying and Blood, palpitations, forgetfulness, night sweats, fever, poor appetite, lack of taste, physical fatigue, and emaciation.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, stir-fried with soil), Huangqi (Astragali Radix, honey-fried), Zhigancao (Prepared Licorice Root), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, white part removed), Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (each 1 qian), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus, honey-fried, this ingredient should be removed), Bai Fuling (Poria, each 0.7 qian), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix, 0.5 qian), Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), with Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Zao (Jujubae Fructus) as guides. Decoct in water and take orally.
Residual pathogens after measles are most prone to cause disaster, presenting repeatedly with severe conditions, which is very dire. Seasonal pestilential Qi spreads through infection, like epidemic ghosts taking souls to Beimang Mountain.
Only when measles are fully erupted does peace arrive; if pathogens are not exhausted, symptoms remain unresolved. Slight irritability and heat indicate pathogens are still vigorous; frequent vomiting indicates toxins are still steaming.
When measles are about to erupt but have not yet done so, it is advisable to disperse them early to resolve their toxicity, preventing residual pathogens from becoming future disasters. If one fails to resolve toxicity in the initial stage, allowing measles to fully erupt, toxins will accumulate internally, inevitably causing harm. This may manifest as high fever leading to chronic wasting, convulsions and epilepsy, diarrhea, rapid coughing with hemoptysis and asthma, vomiting of thick pus leading to Lung Abscess (Fei Yong), or death from infantile malnutrition (Gan Syndrome). Although this is caused by the transmission of seasonal pestilential Qi between individuals, it invariably results from inadequate human management. Practitioners of this field should note: if they see an earlier case die from residual pathogen manifestation without treatment, they must proactively resolve toxicity for subsequent new cases early on, preventing residual pathogens from causing harm and premature death. Only then can they be called skilled physicians. Generally, for measles, if they are fully erupted, toxicity is resolved, and Zheng Qi (Upright Qi) becomes harmonious. However, if during the resolution phase of measles, slight irritability and restlessness persist, resembling a snake in ashes or an earthworm in dust, accompanied by vomiting or diarrhea, this indicates toxin pathogens are stagnant and have not fully exteriorized. For irritability and heat, use the ancient formula Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Decoction for Resolving Toxins) [see Article 35] added with Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus), and Chifuling (Poria with Red Coir). For vomiting, use Chaihu Jupi Tang (Bupleurum and Tangerine Peel Decoction) removing Renshen (Ginseng Radix) and Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), added with Pipaye (Eriobotryae Folium) and Mutong (Akebia Caulis). If indeed measles have not fully erupted, rub the skin with Ramie stem dipped in wine, or Huisu (Coriandri Herba) wine. Once measles are fully erupted, irritability will naturally cease, and vomiting/diarrhea will stop. If after measles resolution there is only fever without other symptoms, use Jiajian Qingji Tang (Modified Clearing Muscle Decoction) added with Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma). If residual toxins remain after measles causing high fever, use the ancient formula Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Decoction for Resolving Toxins) [see Article 35] added with Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Xian Digupi (Fresh Lycii Cortex), Mutong (Akebia Caulis), and Zhike (Aurantii Fructus). If fever persists after measles, use Chaihu Siwu Tang (Bupleurum Four Substance Decoction) [see Article 30] removing Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), and Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), added with Jiuhuanglian (Honey-fried Coptidis Rhizoma), or Shengdi Gupi Tang (Rehmannia and Lycii Cortex Decoction) [see Article 30] added with Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma). If residual toxins are not cleared and residual heat remains after measles, use Shixian Tang (Ten Immortals Decoction) added with Digupi (Lycii Cortex), or Lianqiao Qingdu Yin (Forsythia Toxin-Clearing Drink) removing Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), and Gancao (Licorice Root), added with Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), and Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix). If residual toxins after measles remain unclear and stagnate in the Lung Meridian, causing expectoration of yellow purulent sputum, it constitutes Lung Abscess (Fei Yong). Treat with Sanglian San (Mulberry Bark and Coptis Powder). If ineffective, use Baibu Tang (Stemona Decoction). If still not fully cured, use Huaruishi Wan (Flower Manganese Stone Pills), and additionally use Baiji (Bletillae Rhizoma) powder. Steam sliced pig lung until cooked, dip in Baiji powder, and eat. If these formulas fail, it becomes Lung Flaccidity (Fei Wei). Treat with Ziwan Tang (Asterae Decoction).
