After the eruption of measles, the whole body feels as hot as if burning with fire. This is because pathogenic toxins are severely congested and difficult to eliminate quickly. For resolving the muscle layer (Ji) to promote eruption, only allowing the skin to remain warm is permitted; for saving the interior (Liu) by regulating internal organs, it is appropriate to ensure the smoothness of urination and defecation.
The eruption of measles relies on "fire energy" (Yang Qi and heat momentum); without sufficient heat, measles cannot erupt. When measles are about to erupt, the patient experiences fever throughout the body, or may exhibit restlessness, headache, or bodily stiffness and tension. Once the measles have erupted, the body temperature naturally decreases and becomes cool. If this principle is clearly understood, the measles will subside smoothly. If the measles have erupted but high fever persists without reduction, this indicates that pathogenic toxins are congested and obstructed. It is appropriate to use the ancient formula Daqing Tang (Cyan Blue Decoction), removing Gancao (Licorice Root), to resolve the exterior pathogens. If there is difficulty or pain in urination, the ancient formula Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Decoction for Resolving Toxicity) can be used, adding Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Chuan Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), and Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma). Alternatively, Dalianqiao Tang (Large Forsythia Decoction) can be used, substitiying Digupi (Lycii Cortex) for Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) and removing Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra). If defecation is obstructed, Hejian Liangge San (Cooling Chamber Powder from Liu Wansu's School), removing Gancao (Licorice Root) and adding Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus), should be used to resolve interior pathogens. If fever persists after eruption and food intake is reduced, this indicates that toxins are pressing upon the Stomach. It is appropriate to use Jiawei Digupi San (Modified Lycium Bark Powder), removing Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra) and Gancao (Licorice Root), and adding Jiuzheng Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis steamed with wine).
Zhu stated: Persistent high fever is always due to the congestion and obstruction of pathogenic toxins. In the formulas of the ancient Daqing Tang, Dalianqiao Tang, and Jiawei Digupi San, some use Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), some use Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), and some use Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix). These herbs are used to push the toxins outward. One dare not use purely cooling herbs indiscriminately, as this would block the mechanism of toxin expulsion.
Ancient Formula Daqing Tang (Cyan Blue Decoction): A good prescription for detoxification in treating macules and rashes.
Ingredients: Daqing (Isatidis Folium), Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Jingjie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica), Xian Digupi (Fresh Lycii Cortex), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). Use twelve leaves of Dan Zhuye (Phyllostachydis Folium) as a guiding herb.
Ancient Formula Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Decoction for Resolving Toxicity): Treats Fire Toxin, commonly used for both smallpox and measles.
Ingredients: Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhi Ren (Gardeniae Semen). Decoct in water and take orally. Adding Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) creates the name Jinhua Wan (Golden Flower Pill), which moistens the intestines and purges heat.
Dalainqiao Tang (Large Forsythia Decoction): A good prescription for resolving interior heat.
Ingredients: Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Qu Mai (Dianthi Herba), Jingjie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica), Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis), Che Qian Zi (Plantaginis Semen), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chan Tui (Cicadae Periostracum), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Hua Shi (Talcum), Zhi Ren (Gardeniae Semen), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Chi Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra) (all in equal parts). Add Zi Cao Rong (Arnebiae Radix et Rhizoma cum Mucilage) 5 fen. Decoct in water and take warm before meals.
Modified Digupi San (Modified Lycium Bark Powder)
Ingredients: Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex) 3 qian, Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex) and Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) each 2 qian, Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Chi Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra) each 1 qian, Sheng Xi Jiao Xie (Rhino Cerios Cornu et Os Trachea fragment) and Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) each 5 fen. Decoct in water and take orally.
