Yang Shangshan's Note: From the beginning to the end of this chapter, the content is found in Volume 13, Chapter 46 "Lun on the Causes of Disease" (Bing Neng Lun) of *Suwen* (Plain Questions), and also appears in Volume 11, Chapter 2 of *Jiayi Jing* (The Systematic Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion).
Yellow Emperor asked: There are patients who suffer from excessive anger or joy. Where does this disease originate? (Note: In *Suwen* and *Jiayi Jing*, "anger and joy" is written as "mania" (Nu Kuang), and "originates in making life" is written as "originates in Yang". The New Correction states that in *Taisu*, "nu kuang" is written as "shan nu" [frequent anger].) Qibo replied: It originates in the Yang aspect. The Yellow Emperor asked: Why does abnormal Yang energy cause mania? Qibo answered: Human Yang energy, due to sudden frustration and difficulty in resolution, leads to emotional instability, manifesting as anger or manic joy. This disease is named Yang Jue (Manic Syndrome due to Yang constraint). (Note: In *Suwen* and *Jiayi Jing*, "anger and joy" is written as "shan nu" [frequent anger].)
The Yellow Emperor asked: How can one diagnose it? Qibo answered: The Renying pulse of the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian usually pulsates. The pulses of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian and Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian usually do not pulsate. However, if these two meridians' pulses beat too rapidly, this is the diagnostic sign. (The Renying pulse of the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian is normally active. In a disease named Yang Jue, because Yang energy suffers sudden damage and obstruction, leading to mania and erratic emotions, the fact that the Taiyang and Shaoyang meridians, which should not be active, beat excessively fast serves as the diagnostic indicator. Note: In *Jiayi Jing*, "Ju Yang" is written as "Tai Yang". In *Suwen* and *Jiayi Jing*, the characters "chong bu dong" [repeatedly do not move] do not appear after "bu dong". The annotation "you bing" [has disease] is printed as "you ji" [has illness] in the Yuan edition. "Bu dong er da ji" [do not move but move very fast], the Yuan edition mistakenly prints "dong" as "tong" [pass through].)
The Yellow Emperor asked: How should it be treated? Qibo answered: Reducing food intake will cure it. Food enters the Yin aspect and generates Qi for the Yang aspect; therefore, depriving the patient of food will cure the condition. (Reducing food intake means eating less. Grain Qi is hot; when pushed into the abdomen, it thrives in the Yin and strengthens Yang, which exacerbates the aversion associated with manic illness. Thus, by regulating emotions and reducing food intake, and having the patient take Sheng Tie Luo [Raw Iron Filings], the disease will heal. Sheng Tie Luo refers to iron slurry. Note: In *Suwen*, "Shuai Qi Shi" [reduce their food] is written as "Duo Qi Shi" [deprive their food]. The New Correction states: "In *Jiayi Jing*, 'duo' is written as 'shuai', consistent with *Taisu*. The character 'luo' is written as 'luo' [fall/loose] in *Suwen*. The phrase 'Fu Sheng Chang Qi Zhui Tie Luo' [For generating long Qi hammering iron filings] in *Suwen* and *Jiayi Jing* is written as 'Fu Sheng Tie Luo Zhe' [As for Raw Iron Filings]. Furthermore, the five characters 'Sheng Chang Qi Zhui Tie' are difficult to interpret and must contain errors; since the original copy reads thus, it is retained.)
