The Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian originates at the tip of the great toe, follows the medial white flesh margin of the toe, passes behind the nuclear bone, ascends to the anterior margin of the medial malleolus, then runs posterior to the tibia, crosses anterior to the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian, ascends along the anterior margin of the medial thigh and knee, enters the abdomen, belongs to the Spleen, and connects with the Stomach. It pierces the diaphragm, flanks the pharynx, connects to the root of the tongue, and scatters under the tongue. Its branch diverges from the Stomach, ascends through the diaphragm, and pours into the Heart. When this meridian undergoes pathological changes, symptoms include stiffness of the tongue root, vomiting after eating, epigastric pain, abdominal distension, frequent belching. After defecation or passage of gas, the patient feels relieved and symptoms diminish, accompanied by heaviness of the body. These are diseases governed by the Spleen, including pain at the tongue root, inability to move the body, difficulty in eating, irritability, urgent pain in the epigastrium, loose stools or dysentery, urinary retention, jaundice, inability to lie flat, dizziness upon standing forcibly, swelling and coldness in the inner thigh and knee, and immobility of the great toe. For these conditions, excess patterns are treated with draining methods, deficiency patterns with tonifying methods, heat patterns with rapid needling, cold patterns with retained needling, sinking Qi with moxibustion, and balanced patterns with local points on the meridian. In excess patterns, the Cun Kou pulse is three times larger than the Ren Ying pulse; in deficiency patterns, the Cun Kou pulse is smaller than the Ren Ying pulse. ("An" pronounced 'wa' departing tone).

"Nuclear bone" is also written as "Ci bone" (commonly known as the ankle bone). The bones rising on both sides behind the heel are called ankle bones. The calf is called the fibular belly. The inner thigh is called the thigh. Above the navel is the abdomen. The pharynx is used for swallowing food, located anterior to the larynx, extending 1 chi 6 cun to the stomach, serving as the connection of the stomach. The root of the tongue is the base of the tongue. The Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian originates at the Yinbai acupoint (Yinbai, SP1) at the tip of the great toe, receiving intersection from the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. It follows the medial white flesh margin of the great toe through Dadu (Dadu, SP2), passes behind the nuclear bone through Taibai (Taibai, SP3), Gongsun (Gongsun, SP4), and Shangqiu (Shangqiu, SP35), ascends to the anterior margin of the medial malleolus at Sanyinjiao (Sanyinjiao, SP6), then ascends through Lougu (Lougu, SP7) running posterior to the tibia, ascends 2 cun, crosses anterior to the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian, reaches Diji (Diji, SP8) and Yinlingquan (Yinlingquan, SP9), ascends along the anterior margin of the knee and thigh through Xuehai (Xuehai, SP10) and Jimen (Jimen, SP11), winds into the abdomen, passing through Chongmen (Chongmen, SP12), Fushhe (Fushhe, SP13), Zhongji (Zhongji, CV3), Guanyuan (Guanyuan, CV4), then along the abdomen through Fujie (Fujie, SP14) and Daheng (Daheng, SP15), meets Xiawan (Xiawan, CV10), passes Fuai (Fu'ai, SP16), goes past Riyue (Riyue, GB24) and Qimeng (Qimeng, LR14), runs along the interior of this meridian, descends to the vicinity of Zhongwan (Zhongwan, CV12), belonging to the Spleen and connecting with the Stomach. From Fu'ai, it ascends through the diaphragm, passing Shidou (Shidou, SP17), Tianxi (Tianxi, SP18), Xiongxiang (Xiongxiang, SP19), and Zhourong (Zhourong, SP20), curves downward to reach Dabao (Dabao, SP21), then curves outward and upward from Dabao, meeting Zhongfu (Zhongfu, LU1), ascending into the interior of Renying, flanking the throat, connecting to the root of the tongue, scattering under the tongue, and terminating. Its branch diverges from Fu'ai, runs separately from the exterior of the Zhongwan acupoint in the Stomach, ascends through the diaphragm, pours into the interior of Danzhong (Danzhong, CV17), the domain of the Heart, to intersect with the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian. When this meridian undergoes pathological changes, the disease qi spreads to the meridians, and from the meridians to the zang-fu organs, causing stiffness of the tongue root, vomiting after eating, epigastric disease, abdominal distension, etc. Frequent belching occurs because Spleen Qi moves upward to the Heart forming belch. Relief after defecation or gas passage is due to the dispersion of rebellious Qi downwards. Heaviness of the body is due to the rebellion of Taiyin Qi. These are meridian diseases generated by the Spleen organ; pain at the tongue root indicates that when Taiyin Qi is diseased, it causes stiffness of the tongue root and vomiting, which are diseases of Qi rebellion. In meridian diseases generated by the Spleen organ, symptoms include pain at the tongue root and difficulty eating, which are diseases of the meridians themselves. Qi provides warmth; when diseased in Qi, the body feels heavy. Meridians nourish sinews and bones and facilitate joint movement; when diseased in blood vessels, the body cannot move. This distinguishes the "Is-Moving" diseases of the Taiyin Meridian from the "So-Generated" diseases of the Spleen organ, where internal and external manifestations differ slightly. Spleen Meridian Qi pours into the Heart, causing irritability and urgent epigastric pain. Excess in the Spleen leads to masses, diarrhea, urinary retention, and jaundice, representing internal organ diseases. Inability to lie flat, dizziness upon standing, swelling in the inner thigh and knee, and immobility of the great toe represent external meridian diseases. These are the internal and external manifestations of Taiyin Meridian and Spleen organ diseases. Understanding the principles of the entry and exit of Zang-Fu Yin-Yang and Meridian Qi allows one to comprehend more than half of the major principles of this classic.
