帝曰∶善。厥阴之政奈何?岐伯曰∶巳亥之纪也。
In the first Qi, the earthly Qi migrates; the dryness is about to depart, and cold begins. Hibernating creatures re-enter hiding, water freezes, and frost descends again. Wind arrives, causing the Yang Qi to be depressed. The people feel a sense of tightness and constraint, joint stiffness and fixation, and lower back pain. As the intense heat and summer are about to rise, sores and ulcers occur both internally and externally. In the second Qi, Yang Qi spreads, wind circulates, the spring Qi becomes correct, and all things flourish in response. Cold Qi arrives from time to time, and the people are harmonious. Their diseases include strangury (Lin syndrome), eyes closing or becoming red, with Qi stagnating above causing heat. In the third Qi, the heavenly administration is distributed, the Great Fire (Heart Fire) prevails, myriad species become vibrant and fresh, and cold Qi arrives from time to time. The people suffer from Qi reversal and heart pain, alternating cold and heat, coughing, wheezing, and red eyes. In the fourth Qi, muggy heat arrives, heavy rain occurs frequently, and cold and heat alternate. The people suffer from cold and heat disorders, dry throat, jaundice, nasal congestion with epistaxis, and the onset of fluid retention (phlegm-fluid). In the fifth Qi, the Feared Fire (Shao-Yang Ministerial Fire) descends, summer heat returns, Yang transforms, and all things grow and flourish. The people are healthy, but their disease is warm pathogen (Wen Bing). In the final Qi, the dry command prevails, residual fire is blocked internally, swelling occurs above, accompanied by coughing and wheezing, and in severe cases, blood extravasation. When cold Qi rises frequently, fog and visual obscurations arise. Diseases arise in the skin and interstices, lodge internally in the hypochondrium, connect downward to the lower abdomen, and cause middle-jiao deficiency cold; this is due to the changing of the earthly Qi. One must suppress the influencing Qi, nourish the year's victorious Qi, resolve the stagnant Qi, and first access the source of transformation, so as not to allow excessive violent Qi to generate disease. Eat the grain of the year to preserve true Qi, and eat the interstitial grain to ward off empty evil. For the year, it is suitable to use salty flavor to drain and regulate the upper part; if severe, use bitter flavor to disperse. Use sour flavor to astringe and stabilize the lower part; if severe, use bitter flavor to purge. Adjust according to the similarity and difference of the Qi; when similar to heavenly Qi, transform with cold and clear methods; when similar to earthly Qi, transform with warm and hot methods. Avoid using hot remedies during hot periods, cool remedies during cool periods, warm remedies during warm periods, and cold remedies during cold periods. Dietary choices should follow the same principles. If there is a counterfeiting phenomenon, act oppositely; this is the way. Those who reverse this will have disease arise.
The Yellow Emperor said: Excellent. How is the administration of Jueyin? Qibo said: It is the record of Si and Hai years.
