调其化，使上下合德，无相夺伦，天地升降，不失其宜，五运宣行，勿乖其政，调之正味，从逆奈何？岐伯稽
首再拜对曰∶昭乎哉问也，此天地之纲纪，变化之渊源，非圣帝孰能穷其至理欤！臣虽不敏，请陈
其道，令终不灭，久而不易。帝曰∶愿夫子推而次之，从其类序，分其部主，别其宗司，昭其气数，明其正

气交。初之气，地气迁，阴始凝，气始肃，水乃冰，寒雨化。其病中热胀，面目浮肿，善眠，鼽衄嚏欠呕，小

冰雹，阳光不治，杀气乃行。故有余宜高，不及宜下，有余宜晚，不及宜早，土之利，气之化也，民气亦从之，
间谷命其太也。初之气，地气迁，寒乃去，春气正，风乃来，生布万物以荣，民气条舒，风湿相薄，雨乃后。
民病血溢，筋络拘强，关节不利，身重筋痿。二之气，大火正，物承化，民乃和，其病温厉大行，远近咸若，
湿蒸相薄，雨乃时降。三之气，天政布，湿气降，地气腾，雨乃时降，寒乃随之。感于寒湿，则
民病身重 肿，胸腹满。四之气，畏火临，溽蒸化，地气腾，天气痞隔，寒风晓暮，蒸热相薄，草木凝烟，湿
化不流，则白露阴布，以成秋令。民病腠理热，血暴溢疟，心腹满热胪胀，甚则 肿。五之气，惨令已行，
寒露下，霜乃早降，草木黄落，寒气及体，君子周密，民病皮腠。终之气，寒大举，湿大化，霜乃积，阴乃凝，
水坚冰，阳光不治。感于寒，则病患关节禁固，腰 痛，寒湿推于气交而为疾也。必折其郁气，而取化源，
益其岁气，无使邪胜，食岁谷以全其真，食间谷以保其精。故岁宜以苦燥之温之，甚者发之泄之。不发不泄，
则湿气外溢，肉溃皮拆而水血交流。必赞其阳火，令御甚寒，从气异同，少多其判也，同寒者以热化，同湿者
以燥化，异者少之，同者多之，用凉远凉，用寒远寒，用温远温，用热远热，食宜同法。假者反之，此其道也，
反是者病也。

降，金火合德，上应荧惑太白。其政明，其令切，其谷丹白。水火寒热持于气交而为病始也，热病生于上，清
病生于下，寒热凌犯而争于中，民病咳喘，血溢血泄鼽嚏，目赤 疡，寒厥入胃，心痛腰痛，腹大嗌干肿上。
(Huangdi asked:) When the pathogen is in the interior, but palpation reveals neither fullness nor hardness, and it gathers and scatters intermittently, what should be done? Qibo replied: What a detailed question! For conditions without accumulation (Ji), seek the affected Zang organ. If deficient, tonify it; use herbs to dispel the pathogen; use food to follow up with nourishment; use water soaking (Shui Zi) to promote circulation; harmonize the interior and exterior, and the disease can be cured.
Huangdi asked: Are there regulations for taking toxic and non-toxic herbs? Qibo replied: Diseases differ in duration (new vs. old), and formulas differ in size. The toxicity of herbs has established rules. To treat disease with highly toxic herbs, stop when six-tenths of the disease is gone; with commonly toxic herbs, stop at seven-tenths; with slightly toxic herbs, stop at eight-tenths; with non-toxic herbs, stop at nine-tenths. Use grains, meats, fruits, and vegetables to complete the dietary therapy and eliminate the remaining pathogen. Do not overdo it, lest you damage the Zheng Qi (Upright Qi). If the disease is not fully resolved, repeat the method as prescribed. First, consider the annual climate (Sui Qi); do not violate the harmony of Heaven and Earth. Do not reinforce excess or further deplete deficiency, thereby avoiding disaster for the people. Do not allow pathogens to arise or lose the Zheng Qi, which would cut short human life.
Huangdi asked: For those with chronic diseases, some have Qi stagnation and do not recover; even after the pathogen is gone, they remain emaciated. What should be done? Qibo replied: How profound is the Sage's question! Transformation cannot be substituted, and seasonal changes cannot be violated. As long as the meridians are unobstructed and Blood and Qi flow smoothly, restoring insufficiency to match that of healthy individuals, through nourishment and harmonization, waiting quietly for the right time, carefully guarding the Qi so it does not collapse, the physical form will manifest vitality, and Sheng Qi (Vital Qi) will grow. This is called the way of the Sage King. Thus, the general principle states: Do not substitute natural transformation, do not violate seasons, must nourish and harmonize, and wait for recovery. This is what is meant.
Huangdi said: Excellent.

Huangdi asked: I know about the Six Transformations and Six Changes, the excessive treatments of Sheng (Overcoming) and Fu (Rebounding) Qi, and the sequence of the six flavors (Sweet, Bitter, Pungent, Salty, Sour, Bland). However, regarding the transformation of the Five Yuns (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water), sometimes they follow the Five Qi, sometimes they oppose Heavenly Qi, sometimes they follow Heavenly Qi but oppose Earthly Qi, sometimes they follow Earthly Qi but oppose Heavenly Qi, sometimes they are compatible, and sometimes incompatible. I fail to understand these matters. I wish to comprehend the records of Heaven, follow the principles of Earth, harmonize the Yuns, adjust the Transformations, so that Upper and Lower possess virtue, do not compete with each other, Heaven and Earth ascend and descend without losing propriety, the Five Yuns propagate without deviating from their governance, and the correct flavors are adjusted. How should one adapt to compliance or opposition? Qibo bowed twice and replied: Your question is profoundly insightful! This is the纲纪 (綱紀 - guiding principle) of Heaven and Earth, the source of changes. Who but a Sage Emperor could exhaust its ultimate principles? Although I am not wise, I request to expound this Dao, so it may never perish and remain unchanged for a long time.
Huangdi said: I wish for you to deduce and arrange them in order, following their categories, dividing their regional masters, distinguishing their ancestral functions, clarifying their Qi numbers, and illuminating their correct transformations. May I hear them? Qibo said: First establish the year to clarify its Qi. The numbers of the operational Yuns of Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth, and the transformations of the supervising Qi of Cold, Heat, Dryness, Dampness, Wind, and Fire, then the Way of Heaven can be seen, and the Qi of the people can be regulated. Yin and Yang expand and contract; being close, there is no confusion. Those that can be counted by numbers, let me proceed to explain.
Huangdi asked: What is the governance of Taiyang (Sun)? Qibo said: It is the record of Chen and Xu years.
Taiyang (Shaoyin Junfire on Heaven) Taijue (Jueyin Windwood on Earth) Taiyin (Dampness governs) Ren-Chen and Ren-Xu years. Its Yun is Wind, its Hua (Transformation) is rustling sounds and opening/splitting, its Bian (Change/Abnormality) is shaking, pulling, destroying, and uprooting, its Bing (Disease) is vertigo, tremors, and blindness.
Taijue (Initial/Normal) Shaozheng Taigong Shaoshang Taiyu (Final)
Taiyang Taireg (Initial/Normal) Taiyin Wu-Chen and Wu-Xu years same as Zheng Zheng. Its Yun is Heat, its Hua is warm summer heat, depression and mugginess, its Bian is fierce flames and boiling, its Bing is heat depression.
Taireg Shaogong Taishang Shaoyu (Final) Shaojue (Initial)
Taiyang Taigong Taiyin Jia-Chen (Sui Hui, same as Tian Fu) and Jia-Xu (Sui Hui, same as Tian Fu) years. Its Yun is Yin mist/dust, its Hua is soft, moist, heavy, and glossy, its Bian is thunder shock and drifting storms, its Bing is heaviness in the lower body.
Taigong Shaoshang Taiyu (Final) Taijue (Initial) Shaozheng
Taiyang Taishang Taiyin Geng-Chen and Geng-Xu years. Its Yun is Cool, its Hua is fog, dew, and whistling, its Bian is solemn killing and withering, its Bing is dryness, back dizziness, and chest fullness.
Taishang Shaoyu (Final) Shaojue (Initial) Taireg Shaogong
Taiyang Taiyu Taiyin Bing-Chen (Tian Fu) and Bing-Xu (Tian Fu) years. Its Yun is Cold, its Hua is congealing, miserable, and biting cold, its Bian is ice, snow, frost, and hail, its Bing is severe cold lingering in the valleys.
Taiyu (Final) Taijue (Initial) Shaozheng Taigong Shaoshang
In all these Taiyang ruling Heaven policies, the Qi transformation operates prior to Heaven (Xian Tian). Heavenly Qi is solemn, Earthly Qi is quiet. Cold descends upon the Great Void, Yang Qi does not command. Water and Earth combine in virtue, corresponding above to Chen Xing (Mercury) and Zhen Xing (Saturn). The grains are black and dark red. Its governance is solemn, its command is slow. When Cold governance is greatly launched, marshes lack Yang flames, then Fire erupts awaiting its time. Shaoyang governs in the middle, seasonal rains cease, rain stops and scatters, returning to Taiyin. Clouds face the North Pole, Dampness transformation spreads, moisture flows to all things. Cold spreads above, thunder moves below. Cold-Damp Qi holds at the Qi intersection. People suffer Cold-Damp diseases, developing muscle atrophy, flaccidity and inability to收 (receive/support) the feet, loose diarrhea, and blood overflow.
1st Qi: Earthly Qi migrates, Qi becomes greatly warm, grass blooms early, people suffer epidemics, Warm diseases arise. Symptoms: body heat, headache, vomiting, skin and interstices sores.
2nd Qi: Great Coolness returns, people feel miserable, grass encounters cold, Fire Qi is suppressed. People suffer Qi depression and middle fullness, Cold begins.
3rd Qi: Heavenly governance spreads, Cold Qi moves, rain descends. People suffer Cold, counteracting with internal Heat, abscesses, dysentery, heart heat, dizziness, and oppression. Untreated cases die.
4th Qi: Wind and Damp contend, wind transforms into rain. Things grow, transform, and mature. People suffer great heat and little Qi, muscle atrophy, foot flaccidity, and dysentery with red and white discharge.
5th Qi: Yang recovers and transforms, grass grows, transforms, and matures. People feel comfortable.
6th Qi: Earthly Qi is correct, Damp command acts. Yin condenses in the Great Void, dust dims the suburbs. People feel miserable, cold wind arrives. Counter-reactions cause death in gestation.
Therefore, for this year, it is suitable to use Bitter flavor to dry and warm. Must break the depressed Qi, first support its Hua Yuan (Source of Transformation), suppress its Yun Qi, assist what it cannot overcome. Do not let excessive force generate disease. Eat Sui Gu (Year Grain) to preserve True Qi, avoid Empty Evil to stabilize Zheng Qi. Adjust according to Qi similarity and difference, controlling quantity. Same as Cold-Damp: use Dry-Heat transformation. Different from Cold-Damp: use Dry-Damp transformation. Therefore, similar ones use more, different ones use less. When using Cold, stay away from Cold times; using Cool, stay away from Cool times; using Warm, stay away from Warm times; using Hot, stay away from Hot times. Diet follows the same method. If there is a false condition, reverse it. Reversing this causes disease. This is called "Time."
Huangdi said: Excellent. What is the governance of Yangming (Yang Brightness)? Qibo said: It is the record of Mao and You years.
Yangming (Dryness Metal on Heaven) Shaojue (Jueyin Windwood on Earth) Shaoyin (Heat governs) Clear-Heat and Rebound are same, same as Zheng Shang. Ding-Mao (Sui Hui) and Ding-You years. Its Yun is Wind, Clear, Heat.
Shaojue (Initial/Normal) Taireg Shaogong Taishang Shaoyu (Final)
Yangming Shaoreg Shaoyin Cold-Rain Overcome and Rebound are same, same as Zheng Shang. Gui-Mao (same Sui Hui) and Gui-You (same Sui Hui) years. Its Yun is Heat, Cold, Rain.

6th Qi: Yang spreads, climate warms unexpectedly, hibernating insects appear, flowing water does not freeze. People are healthy and peaceful, disease is Warmth.
Therefore, eat Sui Gu to calm Qi, eat Jian Gu (Intermittent Grain) to remove Evil. Year suitable for Salty, Bitter, Pungent flavors. Sweat, clear, scatter. Stabilize Yun Qi, prevent Evil invasion, break depressed Qi, nourish Hua Yuan. Regulate based on severity and quantity of Cold/Heat. Same as Heat: mostly Tian Hua. Same as Clear: mostly Di Hua. Damp transformation does not flow. White dew distributes yin, completing Autumn command. Must break depressed Qi, take Hua Yuan. Benefit Sui Qi, prevent Evil victory. Eat Sui Gu to preserve True Qi, eat Jian Gu to protect Essence.
Therefore, year suitable for Bitter flavor to dry/warm. Severe cases: vent/drain. If not vented/drained, Damp Overflow externally, flesh ulcerates, skin splits, water/blood mix. Must praise Yang Fire, allow it to resist severe Cold. From Qi difference/similarity, judge quantity. Same Cold: use Heat transformation. Same Damp: use Dry transformation. Different: use less. Same: use more. Use Cool away from Cool, Cold away from Cold, Warm away from Warm, Hot away from Hot. Diet follows same method. False conditions reverse. This is the Dao.
