This is called the imperfection of Shen Guang (Spiritual Light). Not only do corpse ghosts cause harm, but all evil invasions occur because the Spirit has lost its proper position. This is referred to as: those who retain their Spirit live; those who lose their Spirit die; those who obtain the Spirit flourish; those who lose the Spirit perish.
The Yellow Emperor asked: The five Qi (Five Phases energies) intermingle, and their abundance and deficiency alternate. I understand this. Regarding the six Qi (Six Climatic Factors) governing separately, and those managing Heaven and Earth, what is their arrival like? Qibo bowed twice and replied: How enlightened your question is! This concerns the great laws of Heaven and Earth, and the universal correspondence between humanity and the Divine. The Emperor said: I wish to hear how this corresponds to the manifest phenomena above and the obscure realities below. Qibo said: This is the domain of the Dao, where practitioners often harbor doubts. The Emperor said: I wish to hear about this Dao. Qibo said: When Jueyin governs Heaven, its transformation is Wind; Shaoyin governs Heaven, its transformation is Heat; Taiyin governs Heaven, its transformation is Dampness; Shaoyang governs Heaven, its transformation is Fire; Yangming governs Heaven, its transformation is Dryness; Taiyang governs Heaven, its transformation is Cold. Based on the zang-fu positions influenced, the diseases are named accordingly. The Emperor said: What about the transformations of Earth? Qibo said: They follow the same patterns as Heaven's governance, and the Interstitial Qi (Jianqi) operates similarly. The Emperor said: What is meant by Interstitial Qi? Qibo said: Those situated on the left and right are called Interstitial Qi. The Emperor said: How do they differ? Qibo said: The Master of the Year records the annual climate, while Interstitial Qi records the six steps (periods) of the year. The Emperor said: Excellent. How does the Master of the Year function? Qibo said: When Jueyin governs Heaven, it transforms into Wind; when in Spring (Di Quan), it transforms into Sourness; when managing Qi, it transforms into Green/Cyan; as Interstitial Qi, it transforms into Movement. When Shaoyin governs Heaven, it transforms into Heat; when in Spring, it transforms into Bitterness; it does not independently manage Qi transformation, but as Resident Qi, it transforms into Scorching. When Taiyin governs Heaven, it transforms into Dampness; when in Spring, it transforms into Sweetness; when managing Qi, it transforms into Yellow; as Interstitial Qi, it transforms into Softness. When Shaoyang governs Heaven, it transforms into Fire; when in Spring, it transforms into Bitterness; when managing Qi, it transforms into Cinnabar Red; as Interstitial Qi, it transforms into Brilliance. When Yangming governs Heaven, it transforms into Dryness; when in Spring, it transforms into Pungency; when managing Qi, it transforms into White; as Interstitial Qi, it transforms into Clarity. When Taiyang governs Heaven, it transforms into Cold; when in Spring, it transforms into Salinity; when managing Qi, it transforms into Black; as Interstitial Qi, it transforms into Storage. Therefore, one who treats diseases must clearly understand the separate governance of the Six Transformations, the generation of the Five Flavors and Five Colors, and the suitability for the Five Zang Organs, before discussing the threads of disease arising from abundance and deficiency. The Emperor said: When Jueyin is in Spring, Sourness arrives first; I know this. How does the movement of Wind proceed? Qibo said: Wind moves upon the Earth; this is the Root (Ben). The other Qi follow the same method. That which originates from Heaven is the Qi of Heaven; that which originates from Earth is the Qi of Earth. When Heaven and Earth combine their Qi, divided into six solar terms, all things are generated. Thus it is said: Carefully observe the appropriateness of Qi, and do not miss the pathogenesis. This is what is meant. The Emperor said: What is the condition of the diseases governed? Qibo said: If you prepare substances according to the Yearly Qi, there will be no omission of the primary treatments. The Emperor said: Why are they called "First-Year Substances"? Qibo said: Because they are the concentrated essence of Heaven and Earth. The Emperor said: What about those managing Qi? Qibo said: Those managing Qi correspond to the Yearly Master, yet there are differences in excess and deficiency. The Emperor said: What are non-Yearly Qi substances called? Qibo said: They are called Scattered Qi. Thus, although their substance may be similar, their grades differ. Their flavors and aromas vary in thinness or thickness; their natures and functions vary in agitation or stillness; their therapeutic preservation effects vary in quantity; their power of transformation varies in depth. This is what is meant. The Emperor said: What is meant by "Yearly Master Harming the Zang"? Qibo said: It is named by the Zang that overcomes it; this is the key point. The Emperor said: How to treat it? Qibo said: If Yin (excess) invades from above downwards, use what overcomes it to level it; if external Yin invades internally, use what overcomes it to treat it. The Emperor said: Excellent. What is Leveling Qi? Qibo said: Carefully examine the location of Yin and Yang and regulate them, aiming for balance. Regular conditions are treated with regular methods; contrary conditions are treated with contrary methods. The Emperor said: You mentioned examining the location of Yin and Yang to regulate them. The classics state that the Renying (Carotid) and Cun Kou (Radial) pulses should correspond, like a taut rope of equal size, called Ping (Balance). What is the situation with the Yin located at Cun Kou? Qibo said: By observing whether it is a North or South Polarity Year, this can be known.
The Emperor said: I wish to hear this completely. Qibo said: In a North Polarity Year, if Shaoyin is in Spring, the Cun Kou pulse will not respond; if Jueyin is in Spring, the Right side will not respond; if Taiyin is in Spring, the Left side will not respond. In a South Polarity Year, if Shaoyin governs Heaven, the Cun Kou pulse will not respond; if Jueyin governs Heaven, the Right side will not respond; if Taiyin governs Heaven, the Left side will not respond. For all non-responding cases, reversing the diagnostic method will reveal them. The Emperor said: What about the Chi (Calf) pulse indications? Qibo said: In a North Polarity Year, if the Three Yin are below (in Spring), the Cun Kou pulse will not respond; if the Three Yin are above (governing Heaven), the Chi pulse will not respond. In a South Polarity Year, if the Three Yin are in Heaven (governing Heaven), the Cun Kou pulse will not respond; if the Three Yin are in Spring, the Chi pulse will not respond. The Left and Right are the same. Thus it is said: He who knows the essentials finishes in one word; he who does not know the essentials scatters infinitely. This is what is meant.
The Emperor said: Excellent. How do Heaven and Earth Qi invade internally causing disease? Qibo said: In a year where Jueyin is in Spring, if Wind is excessive and prevails, the earthly Qi becomes unclear, the plains grow dim, and grasses flower early. The people suffer from shivering chills, frequent stretching and yawning, heart pain with limb distension, tightness in both hypochondria, inability to swallow food, obstruction in the diaphragm and throat, vomiting after eating, abdominal distension with frequent belching. After defecation and passing gas, they feel relieved as if the illness has subsided, but the body feels heavy. In a year where Shaoyin is in Spring, if Heat is excessive and prevails, flames float on rivers and marshes, and shady places appear bright. The people suffer from borborygmus in the abdomen, Qi rushing up to the chest, asthma unable to stand for long, alternating cold and heat with skin pain, blurred vision and tooth swelling/pain, aversion to cold and fever resembling malaria, pain in the lower abdomen with abdominal enlargement, and hibernating insects failing to hide. In a year where Taiyin is in Spring, grasses flourish early. If Dampness is excessive and prevails, dust dims the rocks and valleys, yellow appears mixed with black, marking the intersection of Extreme Yin. The people suffer from fluid accumulation, heart pain, deafness with muffled hearing, swollen throat and bi-syndrome, bleeding from yin disorders, lower abdominal pain and swelling, inability to urinate, disease rushing to the head causing pain, eyes feeling as if popping out, neck feeling as if pulled, waist feeling as if broken, thighs unable to turn, knees feeling knotted, joints feeling separated. In a year where Shaoyang is in Spring, if Fire is excessive and prevails, flames illuminate the suburbs, and cold and heat alternate. The people suffer from profuse diarrhea with red and white discharge, lower abdominal pain with red urine, and severely, bloody stools. The manifestations are similar to Shaoyin. In a year where Yangming is in Spring, if Dryness is excessive and prevails, mist is clear and dark. The people suffer from frequent vomiting, bitter vomit, frequent sighing, heart and hypochondriac pain preventing turning over, severely dry throat and dusty face, lack of luster on the body, and reverse heat on the outer foot. In a year where Taiyang is in Spring, if Cold is excessive and prevails, condensation and solemnity prevail. The people suffer from lower abdominal pain radiating to the testicles, pulling the waist and spine, upward rushing heart pain, bleeding, sore throat, and submandibular swelling.
The Emperor said: Excellent. How to treat? Qibo said: For Qi in Spring, if Wind invades internally, treat with Acrid-Cool herbs, assist with Bitter, soothe with Sweet, and disperse with Acrid. If Heat invades internally, treat with Salty-Cold herbs, assist with Sweet-Bitter, astringe with Sour, and vent with Bitter. If Dampness invades internally, treat with Bitter-Hot herbs, assist with Sour-Light, dry with Bitter, and drain with Light. If Fire invades internally, treat with Salty-Cold herbs, assist with Bitter-Acrid, astringe with Sour, and vent with Bitter. If Dryness invades internally, treat with Bitter-Warm herbs, assist with Sweet-Acrid, and purge with Bitter. If Cold invades internally, treat with Sweet-Hot herbs, assist with Bitter-Acrid, purge with Salty, moisten with Acrid, and fortify with Bitter.
The Emperor said: Excellent. How do changes in Heavenly Qi manifest? Qibo said: When Jueyin governs Heaven, if Wind is excessive and prevails, the sky becomes dusty and dim, clouds and objects are disturbed, cold generates spring Qi, and flowing water does not freeze. The people suffer from epigastric pain at the heart center, supporting upwards to both hypochondria, obstruction in the diaphragm and throat, inability to swallow food, stiffness of the tongue root, vomiting after eating, cold diarrhea with abdominal distension, loose stools, masses, water retention, and hibernating insects remaining active. The disease root is in the Spleen. If the Chongyang pulse vanishes, death is incurable. When Shaoyin governs Heaven, if Heat is excessive and prevails, stifling heat arrives, and Fire policies execute. The people suffer from vexation and heat in the chest, dry throat, fullness in the right hypochondrium, skin pain, alternating cold and heat with cough and wheezing, heavy rain approaching, hemoptysis, bloody diarrhea, nasal congestion and epistaxis, sneezing and vomiting, change in urine color, severely sores and swelling, pain in the shoulder, back, arm, elbow, and clavicular fossa, heart pain, lung distension, large abdominal fullness, bloating with cough and wheezing. The disease root is in the Lung. If the Chize pulse vanishes, death is incurable.
When Taiyin governs Heaven, if Dampness is excessive and prevails, deep Yin spreads, rain causes drought-like withering, edema, bone pain, and Yin Bi syndrome. Yin Bi is characterized by tenderness that cannot be pinpointed by pressure, pain in the waist, spine, head, and neck, occasional dizziness, difficulty in defecation, dysfunction of Yin Qi, hunger without desire to eat, blood in sputum, heart feeling suspended. The disease root is in the Kidney. If the Taixi pulse vanishes, death is incurable. When Shaoyang governs Heaven, if Fire is excessive and prevails, warm Qi circulates, and Metal policies are unbalanced. The people suffer from headache, fever with aversion to cold resembling malaria, heat attacking the skin causing pain, yellow-red complexion changes, transmission to water retention, facial and bodily edema, abdominal fullness with仰息 (breathing with raised chest), profuse red and white diarrhea, sores, hemoptysis, vexation and heat in the chest, severely nasal congestion and epistaxis. The disease root is in the Lung. If the Tianfu pulse vanishes, death is incurable. When Yangming governs Heaven, if Dryness is excessive and prevails, trees flourish late, grasses grow late, internal changes occur in sinews and bones. The people suffer from left hypochondriac pain, cold within, malaria upon contraction, drastic cooling changing the climate, cough, borborygmus, profuse loose stools, gathering of famous trees, stagnation of life force below, scorched grass tops, sudden heart and hypochondriac pain preventing turning over, dry throat, dusty face, lower back pain, hernia in men, lower abdominal pain in women, blurred vision, sores, acne, carbuncles, and appearance of hibernating insects. The disease root is in the Liver. If the Taichong pulse vanishes, death is incurable. When Taiyang governs Heaven, if Cold is excessive and prevails, cold Qi returns, water freezes, blood changes internally, developing into abscesses. The people suffer from jue-type heart pain, hematemesis, bloody diarrhea, nasal congestion and epistaxis, frequent sadness, and occasional dizziness and collapse. If the transport Fire burns fiercely, violent rain brings hail, chest and abdominal fullness, hot hands with contracted elbows and swollen axillae, palpitations, restlessness in the chest, hypochondrium, and epigastrium, red face and yellow eyes, frequent belching, dry throat, severely blackish complexion, thirst with desire to drink. The disease root is in the Heart. If the Shenmen pulse vanishes, death is incurable. The moving Qi indicates the affected Zang.
The Emperor said: Excellent. How to treat? Qibo said: For Qi governing Heaven, if Wind is excessive and prevails, level with Acrid-Cool, assist with Bitter-Sweet, soothe with Sweet, and purge with Sour. The Emperor said: Excellent. How to treat? Qibo said: For Rebound of Jueyin, treat with Acid-Cold, assist with Sweet-Acrid, purge with Sour, and soothe with Sweet. For Rebound of Shaoyin, treat with Salty-Cold, assist with Bitter-Acrid, purge with Sweet, astringe with Sour, vent with Bitter-Acrid, and soften with Salty. For Rebound of Taiyin, treat with Bitter-Hot, assist with Acid-Acrid, purge with Bitter, dry, and drain. For Rebound of Shaoyang, treat with Salty-Cold, assist with Bitter-Acrid, soften with Salty, astringe with Sour, vent with Bitter-Acrid. Venting should not avoid Heat, do not violate Warm/Cool distinctions; Rebound of Shaoyin follows the same method. For Rebound of Yangming, treat with Acrid-Warm, assist with Bitter-Sweet, drain with Bitter, purge with Bitter, and tonify with Acid. For Rebound of Taiyang, treat with Salty-Hot, assist with Sweet-Acrid, and fortify with Bitter. To treat all victories and rebounds: Cold is treated with Heat, Heat with Cold, Warm with Cool, Cool with Warm, Scattered with Astringent, Suppressed with Dispersing, Dry with Moistening, Urgent with Soothing, Hard with Softening, Brittle with Fortifying, Deficient with Tonifying, Excess with Draining. Calm each Qi, ensure clarity and stillness, then the pathogenic Qi will decline and return to its source. This is the general principle of treatment.
The Emperor said: Excellent. What is meant by Qi Above and Below? Qibo said: The upper half of the body has three Qi, belonging to Heaven, governed by Heavenly Qi. The lower half of the body has three Qi, belonging to Earth, governed by Earthly Qi. Name the Qi by its designation, designate the location by the Qi, and describe the disease. The midpoint is called Tianshu. Thus, if Superior wins and Inferior suffers, name it by Earth. If Inferior wins and Superior suffers, name it by Heaven. When Victory arrives, it is the Repaying Qi that is suppressed and not yet emitted. When Rebound arrives, it does not use different names for Heaven and Earth, but follows the rules of Rebounding Qi.
The Emperor said: Do the movements of Victory and Rebound have constant timing? Is the Qi inevitable? Qibo said: The timing has constant positions, but the Qi is not inevitable. The Emperor said: I wish to hear the principle. Qibo said: From the First Qi to the Third Qi, Heavenly Qi governs; this is the norm for Victory. From the Fourth Qi to the Final Qi, Earthly Qi governs; this is the norm for Rebound. There is Rebound if there is Victory; there is no Rebound if there is no Victory. The Emperor said: Excellent. What happens if Rebound ends and Victory begins again? Qibo said: When Victory arrives, Rebound follows, with no fixed number, stopping only when the Qi declines. If Rebound ends and Victory begins again, and there is no Rebound, it causes harm, injuring life. The Emperor said: Why does Rebound cause contrary disease? Qibo said: Because it occupies the wrong position and is incompatible. If Rebound greatly overcomes Victory, the Master Qi overcomes it, thus causing contrary disease. This refers to Fire, Dryness, and Heat. The Emperor said: How to treat? Qibo said: For Victory of Qi, mild cases follow it, severe cases control it. For Rebound of Qi, harmonious cases level it, violent cases deplete it. Follow the Victorious Qi, calm the suppressed Qi, regardless of number, aiming for balance. This is the Way.
The Emperor said: Excellent. How is Victory and Rebound between Guest and Host Qi? Qibo said: Between Guest and Host Qi, there is Victory but no Rebound. The Emperor said: How does their deviation arise? Qibo said: Host Victory is contrary, Guest...
