The *Nan Jing* (Classic of Difficult Issues) states: The Spleen's qi connects to the mouth; when the mouth is harmonious, one can perceive the taste of grains. The Heart's qi connects to the tongue; when the tongue is harmonious, one can perceive the five flavors. From this, it is known that the tastes of grains and the five flavors enter the Stomach via the mouth and tongue. Those skilled in health preservation carefully regulate their diet, ensuring that every drink and meal, once entering the Stomach, is digested and transformed promptly. Thus, there are no hazards of stagnation. If one has weak constitution, irregular eating habits (hunger or fullness out of season), or overconsumes the five flavors, fish, seafood, dairy products, and cheese, or forcibly ingests cold, raw fruits and vegetables, these will stagnate and accumulate in the epigastrium, eventually forming chronic food retention. Mild cases present with acid regurgitation, vomiting, nausea, chest fullness, belching, diarrhea, or constipation. Over time, accumulations form, developing into zheng jia (masses), sallow complexion, and emaciation. These are all diseases primarily caused by undigested retained food. Generally, as soon as stagnation occurs, one must assess the patient's deficiency or excess and rapidly employ methods to resolve and transform it. Do not delay, lest it develop into a deep-seated, chronic disease.
