The death of a patient is not so simple. Medical malpractice and improper medication are the main causes of patient mortality. Hypertension (High Blood Pressure), diabetes mellitus, Hepatitis B, and other "civilization diseases" rank among the top ten causes of death. This is because every time a new examination method or instrument is invented, it is hailed as new medical knowledge, and vigorous promotion of prevention occurs, which actually leads to patients being treated to death. The harm caused by these treatments to the human body results in death, yet this is attributed to the dangers of "civilization diseases."
The invention of the sphygmomanometer (blood pressure monitor) is like the invention of a sound wave meter. A sound wave meter can measure the frequency and amplitude of sound waves in decibels. For example, if someone shouts loudly, how many decibels is that sound?
If a needle pricks someone's foot, causing them to scream, how many decibels is that scream?
If a knife cuts someone's back, causing them to scream, how many decibels is that scream?
If fire burns someone, causing them to scream, how many decibels is that scream?
If someone wins the first prize in a lottery and screams with joy, how many decibels is that scream?
Whether pricked by a needle, cut by a knife, burned by fire, or winning a jackpot, all can cause people to scream. These sounds can be measured by a sound wave meter to determine their decibel level. The scientific data obtained from the sound wave meter reflects the frequency generated by the vocal cords, which is very accurate and scientific; thus, it is called primary sound waves or intrinsic sound waves.
To treat this screaming sound wave and lower its frequency, should one use drugs or methods such as sewing the mouth shut with needles and thread? Or using a tongue depressor to press down the root of the tongue to lower the sound wave frequency for effective control? Or performing surgery on the vocal cords to eradicate the root cause? Or simply removing the needle, the knife, or extinguishing the fire?
If a sound wave meter can be used as a tool for fraud, then drugs to lower sound waves will be continuously invented, created, and marketed from scientific laboratories. The sound wave meter will create another "civilization disease" amidst bloodshed, and this civilization disease will take a place in the top ten causes of death.
Exercise, emotions, diet, and climatic factors such as wind, summer-heat, cold, dampness, dryness, and fire can all cause blood pressure to rise, just as fever is caused by various reasons. When the cause is identified and the disease problem is resolved, healing occurs; one cannot merely aim to lower blood pressure. There is no such disease as "hypertension" in nature. It only spread worldwide due to the invention of the sphygmomanometer and deliberate marketing, misleading the public's understanding of health and harming countless people.
During health checks, when there is no illness, doctors may tell you: "You have a little hypertension!" "You have a little diabetes!" Since the public has been bombarded day and night with information about hypertension and diabetes, any minor physical change makes everyone suspect if hypertension or diabetes is developing. Day after day, they live in fear of these conditions. Eventually, their wishes come true, and they suffer endlessly, becoming sacrifices to science forever.
(3) Does hypertension cause stroke?
Jogging and exercise promote an increase in blood pressure.
Logically, exercise should cause the blood pressure of hypertensive patients to rise further. Consistent jogging and exercise continuously raise the blood pressure of hypertensive patients, yet eventually, it causes their blood pressure to drop and return to normal. Why is this?
Patients taking antihypertensive drugs find that after several years, their blood pressure problems are not solved; instead, their blood pressure becomes easier to elevate, with more complications arising, making the condition more complex and severe. Their whole bodies suffer from side effects caused by antihypertensive drugs. Why?
Rehabilitation involves mechanically imposing exercises on patients with hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body) who cannot move themselves, to raise their blood pressure, stimulate stronger heartbeats, and promote blood circulation, thereby helping hemiplegic patients recover.
Doing rehabilitation strengthens the effect of raising blood pressure. Why not engage in consistent exercise before illness to prevent hemiplegia, instead of harming the heart with antihypertensive drugs?
Many hospitals simultaneously perform rehabilitation—raising blood pressure—and prescribe antihypertensive drugs. This contradictory medical practice, when will it end?
Air must enter our bodies every second, and our bodies must adjust to air every second. Exercise, specifically consistent exercise—which constantly raises blood pressure—induces sweating, removes obstacles in bodily circulation, and strengthens the body's adaptation to air, resulting in normal blood pressure.
Therefore, for patients diagnosed with hypertension, should their blood pressure be raised further or lowered? Insufficient blood pressure—hypotension—also causes many patients to suffer from hemiplegia—stroke.
Advertisements frequently urge everyone to measure and control blood pressure. Newspapers, magazines, and medical reports often state that hypertension is a risk factor for cerebral stroke, angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, renal failure, and uremia. This is corroborated by the fact that most deaths from stroke and heart disease involve patients with hypertension, earning it the title of "invisible killer."
What do the terms "Zhong Feng" (Stroke/Wind Strike) and "Nao Zhong Feng" (Cerebral Stroke) mean in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)? I have asked more than ten Western medicine physicians or pharmacists, yet none could answer. They might vaguely say: Zhong Feng means hemiplegia, and Nao Zhong Feng means cerebral vessel obstruction, rupture, embolism, or subarachnoid hemorrhage. Consulting TCM classics reveals no record of "Nao Zhong Feng." As medical professionals and authorities, failing to understand the TCM concept of "Zhong Feng" (see Chapter on Zhong Feng), they steal and abuse the term to mislead the public, promoting a deceptive, erroneous, and frightening science called "Cerebral Stroke."
Today, the public often hears Western medicine say there is no cure for the common cold. This is because Western medicine does not understand that the common cold is divided into injuries by Wind, Cold, Summer-Heat, Dampness, Dryness, and Fire affecting different meridians, and instead relies solely on anti-inflammatories, making the body weaker and more prone to colds. Thus, how can there be a cure for the common cold? (See chapters on why children get frequent colds and Fever is not a brain problem). The public fears brain damage from fever, but hypertension is not a brain problem; the public worries about cerebral stroke.
Western medicine does not understand which meridians are injured by Wind, Cold, Summer-Heat, Dampness, or Dryness in colds. Nor do they understand that Zhong Feng, Zhong Shi Tan (Damp-Phlegm Strike), Zhong Shu (Summer-Heat Strike), Zhong Qi (Qi Strike), Zhong Han (Cold Strike), Cu Zhong (Apoplexy), and Zhong E (Evil Strike) can all cause hemiplegia. Knowing only that they cannot cure hypertension, it is no wonder that when the public sends patients with or without hemiplegia to hospitals, most end up paying bills and carrying corpses home, with few recovering fully.
If the public could understand the Zang-Fang theory, the pathology of the twelve meridians, and the transmission of diseases through the Six Stages in Chinese Medicine, distinguishing which of the Five Qi (Wind, Summer-Heat, Cold, Dampness, Dryness, Fire) injures which meridian and organ, we could treat effectively. Taking Summer-Heat as an example: Dai Yuanli stated: Summer-heat diseases have three levels of severity: Mao (Encountering), Shang (Injuring), and Zhong (Striking).
Mao Shu (Encountering Summer-Heat): Abdominal pain, watery diarrhea, affecting the Stomach and Large Intestine. If accompanied by nausea, there is phlegm-fluid retention in the stomach area; treat with Huang Lian Xiang Ru Yin.
Shang Shu (Injuring Summer-Heat): Fever, headache, restlessness, or sensation like needle pricks. This indicates Summer-Heat injuring the muscle layer; detoxify using Bai Hu Tang plus Chai Hu, adding Ren Shen for deficiency.
Zhong Shu (Striking Summer-Heat): Cough with chills and fever, continuous night sweats, rapid pulse. Heat injures the Lung Meridian, Fire overacts on Metal. Treat with Qing Fei Tang or Chai Hu Tian Shui San.
Zhang Congzheng stated: Summer-Heat injuring the Five Zang organs presents differently:
If Summer-Heat enters the Heart: Throat obstruction, dizziness, coma, loss of consciousness.
If it enters the Liver: Vertigo, numbness, and bi-syndrome.
If it enters the Spleen: Coma-like sleep, unawareness.
If it enters the Lung: Sneezing, wheezing, flaccidity, weakness in both legs, or frog-leg posture.
If it enters the Kidney: Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst). Many soldiers sunbathing are often misdiagnosed with diabetes or leukemia.
Hemiplegia, paralysis, coma, and sudden collapse should be distinguished as Zhong Feng, Zhong Shi Tan, Zhong Han, Zhong Shu, Zhong Qi, Cu Zhong, Zhong E... One must clarify which meridian is struck and which Zang-Fu is injured, distinguishing between invasion of Jing (Channels), Luo (Collaterals), Zang (Organs), and Fu (Hollow Organs) for syndrome differentiation and treatment. Then, many patients with hemiplegia, paralysis, coma, or collapse can recover normal limb function, indistinguishable from healthy individuals.
Idiopathic hypertension, ignoring Wind, Summer-Heat, Cold, Dampness, Dryness, and Fire, disregarding emotions, food flavors (Sour, Bitter, Sweet, Pungent, Salty), odors, and meridian/organ differentiation, blindly lowers blood pressure. Lowering blood pressure causes fatigue in the elasticity of the heart and blood vessels, insufficient cardiac function, and an inability to resolve Qi-Blood circulation obstacles. The harm of lowering blood pressure to human health is the true culprit behind strokes, heart disease, and renal failure, not hypertension itself. How long must the public wait to recognize this inverted science?
Lowering blood pressure causes heart and kidney failure, ranking high in mortality statistics. Without the vigorous promotion of hypertension prevention by associations in the Republic of China, harming citizens' hearts and kidneys, how could citizens claim the world's highest rate of cerebrovascular lesions?
Let us use Traditional Chinese Medicine to sever the hands of the true culprit behind this nameless killer!
(4) Understanding the Meaning of "Zhong Feng" in TCM:
From birth to sixty years old constitutes one Jiazi cycle. The body uses the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel) and Du Mai (Governing Vessel) as the main axis, circulating Qi through the twelve meridians to regulate life functions.
Yang represents the rising and expanding nature of Qi; Yin represents the descending and contracting nature. The operation of Yin-Yang meridian Qi is called Six Yin and Six Yang, or Three Yin and Three Yang, corresponding to the Ten Heavenly Stems and Twelve Earthly Branches. The hands and feet operate according to these cycles, changing with time, climate, age, and emotions. These changes cause discomfort and disease.
From birth to thirty years old is the stage of growth and development, where Yang Qi is vigorous, rising, and expanding. The strength of the electromagnetic field of growing Qi corresponds sequentially to Shao Yang (Lesser Yang), Yang Ming (Bright Yang), and Tai Yang (Greater Yang), representing the circulation of Yang meridians (Three Yang).
From thirty to sixty years old is the stage where growth stops, Yang reaches its peak, and begins to descend and contract. The weakening, descending, and contracting Qi corresponds sequentially to Shao Yin (Lesser Yin), Tai Yin (Greater Yin), and Jue Yin (Terminal Yin), representing the circulation of Yin meridians (Three Yin).
Yin-Yang meridian circulation repeats endlessly like a ring. Rising, descending, expanding, contracting, and stabilizing are described as the Mutual Generation and Restriction of the Five Elements, represented by Fire, Water, Wood, Metal, and Earth.
Imbalance in the Mutual Generation and Restriction of the Five Elements leads to illness. Disharmony of Wind, Summer-Heat, Cold, Dampness, Dryness, and Fire causes illness. Disharmonious Qi is expelled through sweat via Yang meridians, or even if entering Yin meridians, returns to Yang meridians for expulsion. This is called Gan Mao (Common Cold). In the *Shang Han Lun* (Treatise on Cold Damage), Gan Mao is referred to as Zhong Feng (Wind Strike), which is essentially injury by Wind. Examples abound: Zhang Zhongjing stated: In Tai Yang disease, with fever, sweating, aversion to wind, and a slow pulse, it is named Zhong Feng.
In Tai Yang disease, whether fever has appeared or not, there is always aversion to cold, body pain, vomiting/reversal, and tight pulses at both cun and chi positions. This is named Shang Han (Cold Damage). The pulse at Cun Kou is floating and tight; floating indicates Wind, tight indicates Cold. Wind injures Wei (Defensive) Qi, Tight injures Ying (Nutritive) Qi. With both Ying and Wei diseased, causing bone and flesh pain, sweating should be induced.
----This Zhong Feng is equivalent to Shang Feng (Wind Injury), distinguishing it from Shang Han.
Tai Yang Zhong Feng, with floating-tight pulse, fever, aversion to cold, body pain, no sweating, and irritability, is treated with Da Qing Long Tang.
Tai Yang Zhong Feng, with dysentery, vomiting/reversal, after the exterior is resolved, internal purgation may be used. If the patient has constant sweating occurring at times, headache, epigastric fullness/hardness radiating to the hypochondrium, dry retching, shortness of breath, sweating without aversion to cold, this indicates the exterior is resolved but the interior is unharmonized; treat with Shi Zao Tang.
Tai Yang Zhong Feng, with floating Yang and weak Yin pulses, spontaneous heat from floating Yang, spontaneous sweating from weak Yin, slight aversion to cold and wind, mild fever, nasal congestion, and dry retching, is treated with Gui Zhi Tang. After inducing sweat, if the body remains hot, pulse floats with spontaneous sweating, heaviness, excessive sleepiness, snoring, and difficulty speaking, downward purgation and moxibustion/fire therapy are contraindicated.
Yang Ming Zhong Feng, with bitter taste, dry throat, abdominal fullness, slight wheezing, fever, aversion to cold, floating-tight pulse. If purged, abdominal fullness and difficult urination result.
Yang Ming Zhong Feng, with wiry-floating-large pulse, shortness of breath, abdominal fullness, hypochondriac and heart pain, unrelieved pressure, dry nose, inability to sweat, lethargy, jaundice of the whole body and face, difficult urination, tidal fever, occasional hiccups, swelling around ears. Acupuncture provides slight relief. If exterior symptoms persist beyond ten days and the pulse is wiry-tight, give Xiao Chai Hu Tang. If the pulse is only floating with no other symptoms, give Ma Huang Tang. If there is no urination, abdominal fullness, and added hiccups, the condition is untreatable.
Shao Yang Zhong Feng, with hearing loss, red eyes, chest fullness and irritability. Vomiting and purging are contraindicated; doing so causes palpitations and fright.
After five to six days of Shang Han or Zhong Feng, with alternating chills and fever, hypochondriac fullness/stiffness, or epigastric palpitations/difficult urination, or no thirst/mild fever/cough, Xiao Chai Hu Tang is indicated.
Tai Yin Zhong Feng, with painful limbs, faint Yang pulse and choppy-long Yin pulse, indicates impending recovery.
Shao Yin Zhong Feng, with faint Yang pulse and floating Yin pulse, indicates impending recovery.
Jue Yin Zhong Feng, with faint-floating pulse indicates impending recovery; non-floating indicates not yet recovered.
For women with Zhong Feng, fever, aversion to cold, menstruation starting, developing after seven to eight days, deep heat with slow pulse, cool body, hypochondriac fullness resembling Jie Xiong syndrome, and delirium, this is Heat entering the Blood Chamber. Prick Qi Men point to drain excess.
For women with Zhong Feng for seven to eight days, continuing chills and fever occurring at times, menstruation stopping, this is Heat entering the Blood Chamber, causing blood coagulation. Initially resembling malaria with periodic attacks, treat with Xiao Chai Hu Tang.
Each of the Six Stages of Zhong Feng has specific symptoms, serving as the basis for syndrome differentiation and treatment.
The "Feng" (Wind) in Zhong Feng refers to air, containing Wind, Summer-Heat, Dampness, Dryness, Cold, and Fire. It operates the Five Zang and Six Fu organs. Imbalance in excess or deficiency causes pathological harm. Treatment distinguishes between Exterior and Interior syndromes. These are manifestations of Gan Mao. The *Shang Han Lun* refers to all these as Zhong Feng, noting that meridian operations never stop completely, and recovery is achieved through exterior resolution—inducing sweat or releasing the muscles.
If the body is weak, exterior pathogens (Wind, Summer-Heat, Cold, Dampness, Dryness, Fire) invade the meridians, and the body lacks the strength to expel them. This leads to the Five Zang and Six Fu or specific meridians losing strength or stopping operation, resulting in hemiplegia, partial wasting, dizziness, collapse, and unconsciousness. This is named Zhong Feng, Zhong Shi Tan, Zhong Shu, Zhong Qi, Zhong Han, Cu Zhong, Zhong E... (See chapter on how these cause hemiplegia).
It is often said: "That person fell and had a stroke." Actually, the person had a stroke and then fell. The stroke caused the fall, not the fall causing the stroke.
Colloquially, Zhong Feng means hemiplegia, partial wasting, paralysis, or unconsciousness. This occurs because the Five Zang and Six Fu or their meridians lack the strength to circulate Wind, Summer-Heat, Cold, Dampness, Dryness, and Fire. These Five Qi enter the internal Zang-Meridians, causing meridian circulation obstacles, unable to expel them or balance exchange with external air.
The ascending function of Qi is Fire, belonging to the Heart. The descending function is Water, belonging to the Kidney. The expanding function is Wood, belonging to the Liver. The contracting function is Metal, belonging to the Lung. The stabilizing function is Earth, belonging to the Spleen.
Exercise and rehabilitation strengthen the Heart Fire organ's function, i.e., strengthening Qi ascent to enhance exchange with external air. This also raises blood pressure, strengthening the Heart Fire's ascending action, allowing the Five Qi to be expelled through sweat, achieving equilibrium among the Five Zang Qi.
Anti-inflammatories cause heart weakness. Lowering blood pressure reduces the ascending action of Heart Fire Qi, suppressing Qi ascent. Diuretics make water exit via urine rather than sweat. This is incorrect treatment. Anti-inflammatories and blood pressure lowering weaken the Heart Fire's ascending power. Long-term blood pressure lowering harms the Heart and Kidneys, preventing body fluids from exiting via sweat.
When body fluids cannot exit via sweat, atmospheric moisture (visible as white breath in winter, sweat in summer) must enter the body every second for cyclic respiratory exchange. Antihypertensive diuretics, vasodilators, autonomic nervous system inhibitors, ACE inhibitors, and calcium channel blockers all cause fatigue in cardiovascular elasticity and heart/kidney decline. Fluids cannot exit via sweat or respiration, accumulating in the epigastrium/stomach area or causing generalized edema. All stem from heart weakness, failure of Water and Fire to interact, and Fire's inability to transform Water into Qi for expulsion. Today's uremia (see Uremia chapter) is largely due to antihypertensive drugs forcing water out via urine, damaging the Heart and Kidneys.
Having invented the sphygmomanometer, yet ignorant of the meaning of "Zhong Feng," they force interpretations claiming Zhong Feng causes health damage.
