When an infant is first born, the entire body presents with blisters resembling fish bubbles or transparent like crystal; upon rupture, they release fluid. This condition arises because the pregnant woman had excessive damp-heat in her body, and the fetus contracted this pathogenic qi while in the womb. Ancient methods used *Miduoseng* (Litharge) ground into an extremely fine powder, which was sprinkled on the affected area to cure it immediately.
[Chen Shouzhen's Note]: This syndrome is characterized by dampness outweighing heat, hence there is no significant swelling. However, it is crucial to treat it promptly to preserve the skin. Genuine *Miduoseng* sourced from silver mines is rare; currently available products are often residues from silver smelting furnaces boiled for a *fu* (a traditional time unit, approx. 2 hours), possessing acrid and salty properties with slight toxicity, and thus should not be used. It is better to use *Luganshi* (Calamina) and *Longgu* (Fossilized Bones) ground together into a fine powder, applied dry to the lesion, which is particularly effective. Internally, administer *Tufuling* (Smilax Glabra Rhizome), *Jinyinhua* (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), and *Sheng Gancao* (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) to clear internal damp-heat, which facilitates recovery more easily.
Within the first month after birth, if an infant’s cheeks become swollen and hard, refusing to nurse or cry, it is named "Tanglangzi" (Mantis Child), also known as "Suo Hou Feng" (Throat-Locking Wind). If treatment is delayed even slightly, the swelling may extend to the throat and nose, rendering the case incurable. However, surgical cutting is strictly contraindicated. Ancient methods involved crushing *Shexiang* (Moschus), *Zhusha* (Cinnabar), and *Luosi* (Snail Meat) into a paste and applying it to the fontanelle, allowing it to dry and fall off naturally; one must never forcibly peel it off. In severe cases, pricking the affected area slightly with a silver needle to release blood, followed by applying ink made from high-quality aged inksticks, can lead to immediate recovery.
[Chen Shouzhen's Note]: Historical medical texts do not record surgical cutting as a treatment; this practice is prevalent in local customs but urgently needs reform. There is no need to prick the blood with a silver needle. Instead, rapidly apply thick juice made from genuine "Eight-Treasure Jing Ink" frequently to the affected area for optimal results. Applying crushed Moschus, Cinnabar, and Snail Meat to the fontanelle may damage the vital Qi while attempting to draw out toxins. If Jing Ink is unavailable, grinding green olive pits with good vinegar to make juice for frequent application is also excellent.
At birth, if redness begins around the anus or scrotum and gradually spreads over the whole body leading to ulceration, the condition becomes incurable. This is caused by the infant inheriting the toxic fire of the parents' Mingmen (Gate of Life) and Xianghuo (Ministerial Fire), named "Husun Gan" (Monkey Malnutrition Syndrome). Bathing the infant is strictly prohibited. Ancient methods used *Niuhuang* (Bovis Calculus), *Hupo* (Amber), *Huarushi* (Flower-bearing Ochre), *Zhenzhu* (Pearl), *Chuanxiong* (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), *Ruxiang* (Olibanum), *Bingpian* (Borneol), *Lvdou Fen* (Mung Bean Powder), *Renzhonghuang* (Human Excrement Heap), and *Dengcao Hui* (Equiseti Herba Ash), ground into powder and taken with boiled water.
[Chen Shouzhen's Note]: For this syndrome, external application should be used first. Grind *Sheng Shigao* (Gypsum Fibrosum), *Da Meipian* (Borneolum Syntheticum), *Baila* (White Beeswax), *Chishizhi* (Red Halloysite), *Huashi* (Talcum), and *Qingdai* (Indigo Naturalis) into an extremely fine powder. Mix with egg yolk/white from a hen that has recently hatched chicks to apply to the affected area. If the malnourishment involves dampness, simply sprinkle the dry powder onto the lesion; both methods are acceptable. Subsequently, decoct *Sheng Gancao* (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) in water, mix in *Jinyinhua Lu* (Lonicerae Japonicae Flower Dew) and *Ye Qiangwei Lu* (Rosa Multiflora Flower Dew), warm it gently, and administer slowly. If the toxin is excessively heavy, add small amounts of genuine *Xi Huang* (Bovis Calculus), genuine *Xi Po* (Amber), and *Dengxin Hui* (Ampelodesmi Caulis Ash) to the decoction and administer slowly for stability.
