To treat the syndrome of wind-cold closing the exterior and summer-heat being trapped inside, manifesting as headache, fever, vexation, thirst, or vomiting and diarrhea progressing to cholera-like illness (Huoluan), or spasms in both calves. In cases where summer-heat is trapped and cannot be vented, only Xiangru (Moslae Herba) is effective. Xiangru is a crucial herb for dispelling summer-heat, yet formularies refer to it as a "San Ji" (powder/formula). Folk custom calls it a contraindicated medicine for summer; if it is forbidden in summer, when should it be used? This is an unscientific assertion that causes a good medicine to suffer injustice, which is truly regrettable; therefore, this is clarified.
Xiangru (Moslae Herba), Bian Dou (Vigna Semen), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) (stir-fried with ginger juice, each 1.5 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (honey-fried, 0.5 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
If accompanied by wind-cold, add Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Herba), Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Man Jing Zi (Vittariae Fructus) to this formula; if accompanied by cholera-like illness with vomiting, diarrhea, vexation, and thirst, add Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) to this formula. If there are spasms in both calves, add Mu Gua (Chaenomelis Fructus), Fu Ling (Poria); Mu Gua is a miraculous agent for treating spasms. If wind and summer-heat contend, causing convulsions and tremors, add Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Gou Teng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis) to this formula; generally, summer-heat syndromes are not suitable for inducing sweating, but here wind-dispersing herbs are used because the summer-heat is complicated by wind. If summer-heat and dampness contend, it is named Shi Wen (Damp-Warmth); erroneous use of sweating methods will worsen the condition, making it difficult to treat; Cang Zhu Bai Hu Tang (Atractylodis Rhizoma White Tiger Decoction) should be used. Contemporary physicians, regardless of whether it is summer-heat or dampness, indiscriminately use dispersing methods, causing significant harm to life.
To treat indulgence in cold and raw food during summer months, resulting in cholera-like illness (Huoluan), abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, aversion to cold, and high fever.
Huo Xiang (Agastaches Herba), Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus Rotundus), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Fu Ling (Poria), Zi Su (Perillae Folium), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (each 1 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (soil-fried), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Tuber), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) (each 0.7 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (honey-fried, 0.5 qian), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (3 slices). Decoct in water and take orally.
Take this medicine in advance to prevent invasion by summer-heat.
Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) (1.5 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (1 qian), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) (heart removed), Zhi Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (honey-fried) (each 0.5 qian), Bian Dou (Vigna Semen) (2 qian), Fu Ling (Poria) (0.7 qian), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Bei Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) (each 0.3 qian), Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) (0.4 qian), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), Ze Lan (Lycopersici Herba) (each 0.2 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
