Chapter: Fan Wei (Revolving Stomach) Part 1/2
Category: Medical Discussion
[Translation]
[Zhu Danxi] "Fan Wei" (Revolving Stomach, referring to the condition where food is difficult to swallow or vomited immediately after ingestion) generally has four causes: Blood Deficiency (Xue Xu), Qi Deficiency (Qi Xu), Heat (Re), and Phlegm (Tan). Treatment must utilize Tongbian (Child's Urine), Zhuli (Bamboo Juice), Jiu Zhi (Chive Juice), Niu/Nai Ru (Cow/Sheep Milk), and Jiang Zhi (Ginger Juice). If it is Qi Deficiency, add Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction); if it is Blood Deficiency, add Si Wu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) with Tongbian; for young people, use Si Wu Tang to clear blood in the stomach cavity. Dryness of blood leads to insufficient fluids, causing dry and difficult bowel movements; for the elderly, it is difficult to cure, treatment must use herbs like Ren Shen (Ginseng) and Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala) to protect against Qi and Stomach Deficiency. A middle-aged woman suffered from Fan Wei; I used Si Wu Tang added with Bai He Chen Pi (White Aged Tangerine Peel), Liu Jian Tao Ren (Peach Kernel with tip retained), Sheng Gan Cao (Raw Licorice), and Jiu Hong Hua (Safflower soaked in wine), decocted strongly, with Donkey Urine added to prevent potential parasitic infection. After taking dozens of doses, her condition stabilized.
A carpenter from Taizhou, aged twenty-seven, was diligent in his work and clever by nature. He had a virtuous wife and liked drinking alcohol. He suffered from Fan Wei for half a year. His face was pale, his pulse was choppy and irregular, heavy pressure revealed a large but weak pulse. Bowel movements occurred only once every eight or nine days, with feces dry and hard like sheep dung. He was extremely emaciated and weak. I considered this to be exhaustion of Essence and Blood. First, I gave him Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) decocted with Sugarcane Juice, added with Fu Zi (Aconite) and Da Huang (Rhubarb). Waiting for the stool to soften slightly, I advised him to quit his job and stay at a cowherd's house, sipping fresh warm Cow Milk slowly. Each time he finished one cup, five or six times a day, gradually increasing to seven or eight times. He did not eat any other vegetables, fruits, porridge, or rice. After half a month, his stool softened; after more than a month, he recovered. However, he sometimes felt dry mouth because the Alcohol Toxicity had not been resolved. Occasionally drinking a little Sugarcane Juice, he fully recovered within nearly two months. (Note: Liu Jun Zi Tang consists of Ren Shen, Fu Ling, Bai Zhu, Zhi Qiao, Chen Pi, Ban Xia in equal parts, decocted with Sheng Jiang and Da Zao.)
For Fan Wei, use two cups of Jiu Zhi, one cup of Niu Ru, and half a cup of Sheng Jiang Zhi, mix evenly and take warm. Effective. (Other formulas are seen earlier.)
[Mei] Mainly treats Fan Wei, characterized by eating in the morning and vomiting in the evening, or vomiting immediately after eating. Use seven sheng of Sugarcane Juice and one sheng of Ginger Juice. Mix the two ingredients and divide into three doses.
[Zhu Danxi] A man in Hangzhou, over forty years old, had suffered from Fan Wei for two months. His mouth was dry, and he had no desire to eat. Sometimes he did not vomit; when he did, the vomitus contained saliva and phlegm, and he felt relieved in the chest and diaphragm after vomiting. His pulses were all choppy, and heavy pressure revealed a wiry and large pulse. This was likely caused by his excessive consumption of mineral-based and sexual enhancement medicines during his prime. At that time, it was early autumn and still hot. I instructed him to make much Bamboo Juice, cook Poppy Seeds into porridge to replace regular meals, giving him only one or two mouthfuls at a time, yet offering it frequently while warm. From then on, he stopped vomiting. Ten days later, when the weather cooled slightly, I gave him thin porridge made with flowing water and a little Bamboo Juice. Occasionally, I used Si Wu Tang added with Chen Pi to nourish blood. After more than a month, he recovered.
[Shi Liao Ben Cao] Treats Spleen and Stomach Qi Weakness, indigestion, nausea, reversing stomach, inability to swallow liquids. Take half a sheng of Millet, grind into powder, form pills with water the size of Sophora seeds. Boil until cooked, add a little salt, and swallow with the juice on an empty stomach.
[Worldly Prescriptions] Treats Fan Wei with acid regurgitation. Take six liang of Yi Tang (Maltose) and four liang of Sheng Jiang, grind finely and mix into cakes, then sun-dry. For each use, take ten liang of the cake, add one liang of Gan Cao, grind into powder, and take with boiled water. Chen Yanzheng found this effective.
Yang Qi accumulation and stagnation cause Yang Qi obstruction; obstruction requires purging. If urgent correct treatment is not applied, incompetent doctors will ruin the condition. (Full text see Yin Yang.)
Obstruction leads to closure, upper and lower communication ceases; this is a disease caused by sudden grief. (From Su Wen: Tong Ping Xu Shi Lun)
[Li Dongyuan] Treats mid-jiao vomiting due to Food Stagnation conflicting with Cold Qi, causing vomiting and pain. Suitable to take Zi Chen Wan.
Ban Xia Qu (3 qian), Wu Mei (pitted, 2 qian), Chen Xiang (1 qian), Xing Ren (peeled and tipped, 1 qian), Sha Ren (3 qian), Ding Xiang (2 qian), Bing Lang (2 qian), Mu Xiang (1 qian), Chen Pi (5 qian), Bai Dou Kou (0.5 qian), Bai Zhu (1 qian), Ba Dou Shuang (0.5 qian).
Grind all into fine powder, mix in Ba Dou Shuang evenly, form pills with vinegar paste the size of millet seeds. Take fifty pills per dose, with Ginger Soup after meals. Stop when cured. Children's dosage differs. Another method for Fan Wei vomiting: soak one orange peel briefly, remove white pith, wrap a piece of ginger, seal with flour paper, roast until cooked, remove outer layer, decoct soup, and take one hundred Zi Chen Wan pills with it. Take twice a day. Continue until bowel movement opens and vomiting stops. This formula treats Cold Stagnation Qi. (Ji Yuan Bing Ji includes Dai Zhe Shi and Rou Guo, but no Bai Zhu.)
[Zhang Yuansu] Hou Po Wan mainly treats Fan Wei with vomiting and reverse flow, food dysphagia, Qi rushing to the heart, and various abdominal diseases. Its ingredients are the same as Wan Bing Zi Wan Wan.
Hou Po, Shu Jiao (remove eyes, lightly stir-fried), Chuan Wu Tou (processed, peeled. Each 1.5 liang), Zi Wan (remove upper sprouts), Wu Zhu Yu (rinse with boiling water), Chang Pu, Chai Hu (remove sprouts), Jie Geng, Fu Ling, Guan Gui, Zao Jiao (remove skin and strings, roast), Gan Jiang (processed), Ren Shen (Each 2 liang), Huang Lian (2.5 liang), Ba Dou Shuang (0.5 liang).

Take three pills initially, gradually increase to five or seven pills, stopping when loose stools occur. Take with Ginger Soup after meals, then lie down. The efficacy of this medicine is the same as Wen Bai Wan in Ju Fang. It is also highly effective for dysentery between late summer and winter. In spring and summer, add Huang Lian (2 liang). In autumn and winter, add Hou Po (2 liang). For treating Wind in spring and autumn, besides adding Huang Lian and Hou Po, add Chang Pu and Fu Ling (1.5 liang each). For persistent wind-pain, besides spring/autumn additions, add Ren Shen, Chang Pu, and Fu Ling (1.5 liang each). For Heart Accumulation, add Chang Pu and Bai Fu Ling as assistants. For Liver Accumulation, add Chai Hu and Shu Jiao. For Lung Accumulation, add Huang Lian and Ren Shen. For Spleen Accumulation, add Zhu Yu and Gan Jiang. For chronic diarrhea in autumn/winter, add Huang Lian and Fu Ling.
[Bao Ming Ji] Fan Wei with unobstructed bowels indicates Intestines overcoming Stomach. Take thirty pills of Ban Shui Wan from Ju Fang. For severe constipation, use the following medicine.
Fu Zi (5 qian), Ba Dou (2 pieces), Pi (size of a bean).
Grind to extremely fine powder, form pills with Ginger Paste the size of mung beans. Take one pill per dose with plain water.
For lower jiao vomiting, eating in the morning and vomiting in the evening, eating in the evening and vomiting in the morning, with unobstructed bowels, use Fu Zi Wan.
Fu Zi (processed, 5 qian), Pi (ground, 0.5 qian), Ba Dou Shuang (1 qian).
Grind together to extremely fine powder, bind with melted yellow beeswax, form pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take one or two pills per dose with cold water. Stop when loose stools occur. Afterward, take Zi Wan Wan, usually one pill, to prevent re-obstruction.
[Li Dongyuan] Bai Zhu Mu Xiang San treats Cold Stagnation Qi vomiting and abdominal pain, indicating no actual stagnation. Strong Stomach causes dry heaving with sound but no matter; strong Spleen causes vomiting with forceful expulsion, leading to abdominal pain. This medicine should harmonize it.
Mu Xiang (1 qian), Bai Zhu (0.5 liang), Ban Xia Qu (1 liang), Bing Lang (2 qian), Fu Ling (5 qian), Gan Cao (4 qian), Ding Xiang (1 qian).
Grind into fine powder. Take one or two qian per dose, mixed with strongly decocted Shao Yao and Sheng Jiang Soup. If there is stagnation, pressing on the pain makes it worse; if no stagnation, pressing does not hurt.
Bai Zhu San treats vomiting due to Stomach Deficiency and Phlegm.
Ban Xia Qu (0.5 qian), Bai Zhu, Mu Xiang, Gan Cao (Each 1 liang), Bing Lang (3.5 qian), Fu Ling.
Grind into fine powder. Take two qian per dose before meals with Ginger Soup.
[Luo Tianyi] Shi Ge Ge Qi San specializes in treating ten types of Ge Qi. Cold Ge, Wind Ge, Qi Ge, Hidden Ge, Heat Ge, Sadness Ge, Water Ge, Food Ge, Joy Ge are all sources of disease. They arise from worry, fright, imbalance of cold and heat, improper care, untimely emotions, gluttony, leading to indigestion, accumulation in the upper Ge, intestinal rumbling, and coughing with phlegm. As years pass, chest and throat feel blocked, gradually becoming emaciated. If not removed for long, it becomes a malignant condition.
Ren Shen, Bai Fu Ling, Guan Gui, Zhi Qiao, Zhi Gan Cao, Shen Qu (stir-fried), Mai Ya (stir-fried), Guang Zhu (processed), Bai Zhu, Chen Pi (remove white), Gan Jiang (processed), Jing San Leng (roasted), He Li Le (roasted, pitted, Each 1 liang), Hou Po (Ginger processed), Bing Lang, Mu Xiang (Each 5 qian above).

Grind to extremely fine powder. Take two qian per dose with a little salt, taken like tea. Adding Sheng Jiang and dates for decoction is also good, anytime. It treats Qi deficiency, tonifies labor, unblocks vessels, tonifies Spleen-Stomach, removes phlegm and excess.
[Ben Cao] Donkey Urine treats Fan Wei. Waitai Mi Yao records: In my youth, I suffered from this disease. Whenever I ate cakes, soups, or porridge, I vomited them shortly after. During the Zhenguan era, Xu Fengyu and his brothers, along with Chai Jiang, were renowned physicians. By imperial decree, they treated me. Doctors exhausted their skills but could not cure me. I became increasingly emaciated and weak, death imminent. Suddenly, a guard said: Taking Donkey Urine is very effective. I took two he in the morning, and afterward, only half the food was vomited. In the afternoon, I took another two he. At dusk, I ate porridge, and vomiting stopped. Later reported, five or six people in the palace with Fan Wei took it together and recovered simultaneously. This medicine is slightly toxic; do not take too much. Collect urine, take two he warm. For deep-seated illness, daily administration yields good results. (Ben Cao says: Donkey Urine treats Jia Fan Wei. Also says: Donkey Urine is cold in nature and sweet in taste.)
[Worldly Prescriptions] Another prescription: Donkey Urine mixed with Ping Wei San. (Ping Wei San see Diarrhea section.)
Xin Wa San treats Fan Wei.
Take a piece of old tile, burn red, dip in Donkey Urine twenty-one times, grind into powder. Burn warehouse rice until charred, grind into powder. Mix two parts rice powder with one part tile powder, bind with wax essence and rice paste into pills. Swallow with Donkey Urine and Ping Wei San.
[Zhu Danxi] Fan Wei Formula

[Luo Tianyi] Ren Shen Li Ge Wan treats chest discomfort, phlegm-cough with wheezing and fullness, unblocks Spleen-Stomach stagnation, constipation, pushes out the old and generates the new. It is a sacred medicine for treating Ge Qi.
Mu Xiang, Bing Lang (7.5 qian), Ren Shen, Dang Gui, Huo Xiang, Gan Cao, Zhi Shi, Da Huang (wine-soaked), Hou Po (Ginger processed. Each 1 liang).
Grind into fine powder, form pills with drops of water, size of Sophora seeds. If difficult to pill, add a little leftover steamed dough. Take thirty to fifty pills per dose after meals with various drinks.
[Ben Cao] Da Huang Tang treats Cold Saliva Fan Wei. Symptoms begin with flowing cold saliva, followed by vomiting food. This is a Lao Syndrome (Consumption Syndrome). If not treated early, death is imminent.
Use one liang of Da Huang, half a teacup of fresh Ginger Juice. Roast Da Huang until dry, then soak in Ginger Juice. Repeat until juice is exhausted, slice and dry, grind into powder. Take two qian per dose with a pinch of aged rice, two stalks of scallion white, one cup of water. Decoct to 70%. Eat scallion white first, then take the medicine. Root cause eliminated within ten days.
[Luo Tianyi] Xuan Ming Fen and Po Xiao, regardless of amount, boil, clarify, and filter five to seven times. Leave exposed to stars and moon overnight until naturally forming green-white nitre. Pack tightly in a clay pot, calcine over charcoal fire from slow to tight until it melts and stops sizzling. Add top fire calcination once, pour onto clean ground, cover with basin to remove fire toxicity. Grind into fine powder by evening. Add two liang of Gan Cao powder per two jin. Take one or two qian per dose with Peach Blossom Soup or Scallion White Soup.
Treats Qi stagnation in upper Ge, blockage of Five Zang organs with evil heat. Avoid fish and lotus root.
[Zhu Danxi] For Fan Wei with accumulated fluids, generally use Yi Yuan San. Clarify fresh Ginger Juice, take the clear bottom liquid, form small pills, take occasionally. (Yi Yuan San formula see Diarrhea section.) For Fan Wei treatment, use Zhu Yu, Bei Mu, Gua Lou, and Niu Xi Cao.
[Ben Cao] For accumulation and stagnant fluids, phlegm-water generating worms, which over time become Fan Wei or transform into Stomach Abscess, the theory is in Ling Shu and Chao Shi Bing Yuan. Yuan Hua Wan.
Yuan Hua (vinegar-stir-fried, weighed, 1 liang), Niu Xi, Ye Lang Ya Gen, Jie Geng (stir-fried yellow), Li Lu (stir-fried), Bing Lang (Each 0.5 liang), Ba Dou (10 grains, stir-fried black).
Grind into fine powder, form pills with vinegar paste the size of red beans. Take two or three pills per dose, increase to five or seven pills, take before meals with Ginger Soup. Regular use resolves phlegm, dissipates hardness, and kills parasites. I have suffered from Yin Pi for thirty years. In my later years, I often had mixed phlegm-fluid attacks; if delayed, I vomited. Sometimes drinking half a cup of wine would stop it, fitting this syndrome. Reading Chao Shi Bing Yuan's discussion on Jiu Jia: Drinking much grain but eating little food leads to gradual emaciation. The patient constantly desires wine; without wine, they vomit, sleep much, cannot eat further. This is caused by worms in the Stomach, named Jiu Jia. This medicine treats it. Essentially, one must abstain from alcohol for easy cure; without abstinence, it is useless.
[Hai Zang] There was a person named Yang Shi who suffered from Wind-Qi rushing to the heart, vomiting food, and total body emaciation. He took five pills of Wan Bing Zi Wan Wan daily. After twenty days, he passed five or six meat-like toad masses and two sheng of white pus, and recovered. Also, Vice Minister Zhao vomited after eating, lost sight and hearing. He took five pills of Wan Bing Zi Wan Wan. After ten days, he passed five or seven green snakes and three sheng of foul pus, then recovered. (Zi Wan Wan is the aforementioned Hou Po Wan for Fan Wei plus Qiang Huo, Du Huo, and Fang Feng; it is a formula for grinding accumulations.)
[Worldly Prescriptions] Treats Fan Wei. Roast Ascaris lumbricoides (Huichong) over fire until powdered, mix with meat juice and take.
All rebellious Qi rushing upward belongs to Fire. (Full text see Diagnosis.)
[Worldly Prescriptions] Treats Fan Wei. Take large field snails in any quantity, raise in fresh water until they spit out mud. Clarify and discard clear water. Spread a rice sieve on the ground, place parchment paper on ash, pour the mud onto the paper. When dry and thick, form pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take thirty pills per dose with Huo Xiang Soup, immediate cure. Release the snails back into water; if eaten, the illness returns. For long-standing Fan Wei, mix Wall Earth with Xiang Fu powder, take frequently with Rice Drink.
[Ben Cao] Treats Fan Wei vomiting.
Bai Fan (2 liang), Huang Dan (1 liang).
Grind into powder, put in a clay pot, calcine until mixed and taken out. Place on clean paper on the ground, cover with a basin overnight. Grind again, bind with steamed dough into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take five to seven pills per dose with warm wine on an empty stomach, adjusting for age and deficiency/excess.
[Luo Tianyi] Hong Dou Wan treats various vomiting, Ge Qi, and Fan Wei.

First grind the first four ingredients into powder, then mix in Liu Huang and grind evenly. Take two qian per dose. Use one piece of Fei Liu Huang (sublimed sulfur), remove hair, wings, feet, intestines, fill with medicine inside. Wrap tightly in five to seven layers of wet paper, roast over low fire until cooked. Chew and take, then follow with warm wine. Take three times a day, anytime. If not eating meat, take with warm wine or millet porridge drink. (Fei Liu Huang is sometimes said to be bat, but Ben Cao has no record.)
[Worldly Prescriptions] Liu Ding Wan treats Fan Wei miraculously. It is Xiang Ling Wan. (Formula see Vomiting section.)
[Ben Cao] Fu Zi San treats Fan Wei.
Take one very large Fu Zi, place on a brick, apply fire around four sides, gradually roasting it. Soak in fresh Ginger Juice, apply fire again, repeat until about half a bowl of Ginger Juice is absorbed. Dry, add two qian of Ding Xiang. Take two qian per dose with one cup of water and a little millet. Decoct to 70%. Cure within three doses. Dou Men Fang uses millet drink to take one qian. Another prescription treats men, women, and children with blue lips, yellow face, cold abdominal pain pulling to lower abdomen, leading to Fan Wei, vomiting, bitter mouth, dry tongue, less waking more sleeping, limb spasms. Regardless of duration, it cures all Spleen-Cold diseases. A woman, over forty, suffered Fan Wei for thirty years, yellow-black complexion, doctors failed. She underwent repeated moxibustion on Shu points, worsening the condition. After taking this medicine for seven days, she completely recovered. After one month, the root was gone. Since then, taking three to five doses cured minor Spleen ailments instantly. It preserves Stomach Qi, generates flesh, promotes appetite, and harmonizes Ying and Wei. Regular use greatly benefits. Tested repeatedly, successful. Do not neglect.
Ren Shen (1 liang), Bai Fu Ling (2 liang), Fu Zi (over 7 qian, processed, peeled, navel removed), Fen Cao (1 liang), Huang Qi (1 liang, salt-processed).
Grind into fine powder. Take three large qian per dose, decoct with Salt Soup. Avoid raw, cold, oily, sticky foods. No ineffective cases, very wonderful.
[Luo Tianyi] Gui Xiang San treats Ge Qi Fan Wei, difficult to cure with other medicines, eating in morning vomiting in evening, severe cases vomiting immediately after eating. Effect is miraculous and fast.
Shui Yin, Hei Xi (Each 3 qian), Liu Huang (5 qian).
These three ingredients, grind in a crucible with willow wood pestle, refine over low fire into ash. Take out, mix with two qian Ding Xiang powder, two qian Gui powder, three qian Sheng Jiang powder. Grind evenly. Take three qian per dose with yellow millet porridge drink. One dose effective, severe cases take another.
The above Ding Xiang and Fu Zi examples treat Fan Wei where internal organs have Cold. Danxi said: Treat Fan Wei avoiding very drying agents; violating this causes death. If used, must combine with Blood-moistening medicines. Also, previous formulas for draining accumulation are aromatic-drying agents; users must be cautious.
[Ben Cao] Prescription for men, women, children with long-term or recent Fan Wei vomiting. Use Wu Ling Zhi alone, any quantity, grind into fine powder. Form pills with Yellow Dog Gallbladder Juice the size of longan. Take one pill per dose with half a cup of good wine warm. If not stopped, take again. Cure within three doses. (Yan Yi says: Wu Ling Zhi is effective for moving meridian blood. Ben Cao says: Sweet and warm, treats cold Qi in heart and abdomen, unblocks meridians, treats amenorrhea in women.)
