According to the *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases): If daily life is not regulated properly, in individuals with weak Spleen-Stomach (the digestive system), the heat from mineral drugs (Shi Yao) becomes stagnant and attacks the Spleen-Stomach. This causes the Qi of the Spleen-Stomach to become disharmonious and unable to transform food, leading to rebellious Qi and vomiting, which is called "Ou Ni" (Rebellious Vomiting).
Qin Chengzu states: The Mangxiao Wan (Mirabilite Pill) treats rebellious vomiting caused by accumulated heat from taking powder preparations. Formula:
Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas, 3 liang) Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 3 liang) Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, 3 liang)
These three substances are each separately pounded and processed. First, make a powder of Dahuang; sieve the Mangxiao. Then pound the Xingren kernels until they form a paste. Mix the three substances together and form pills with honey. Take two pills the size of a Chinese quince seed (Wuzi), twice a day. The dosage may be adjusted according to circumstances.
The *Duanju Fang* (Short Drama Formulas) states: For treating irritability, oppression, and rebellious vomiting caused by taking powder preparations, use the Renshen Tang (Ginseng Decoction). The method discussed by Daoyiren Fayi involves modifications as follows:
Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 2 liang) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix, 2 liang) Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 2 liang) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 1 liang) Gualou (Trichosanthis Fructus, 2 liang)
These five substances are boiled in seven sheng of water until two sheng remain. Divide into three doses.
Cao She discusses: Cough with rebellious Qi, sore throat, nasal congestion, and discharge of clear mucus are originally common signs of Cold in the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner). However, Heat from dispersing minerals can also present with these symptoms. For cold cough, warming therapy is appropriate. For hot cough, drinking wine should theoretically lead to recovery. To distinguish them: if drinking cold water aggravates the condition, it is indeed a cold cough. If drinking cold water brings relief, it is indeed a hot cough.
Huangfu Mi states: Sometimes there is cough with rebellious Qi, injury in the throat, and discharge of clear blood. This occurs due to sitting or lying in cold conditions, or due to eating warm foods. Drink cold water and apply cold stones externally to soothe the throat. (Note: The *Hongxue Fang* (Red Snow Formula) states: It treats all cases of Dan-Shi (mineral drug) fever, rising Qi, and cough. Patients take it mixed with water.)
Qin Chengzu states: To treat cough, gallbladder-related vomiting, and coldness in the chest caused by taking powder preparations, first take the powder. If the effect of the powder is too strong and hot medicines cannot be taken, use the Xingren Jian (Almond Decoction):
Xingzi Zhong Ren (Kernels of Apricot Seeds, 30 pieces) Baimi (White Honey, 6 he) Ziwan (Asternatis Radix, 1 liang) Jiangjiang (Dried Ginger, 1 liang) Niu Zhi (Bovine Fat, 1 sheng)
These five substances are pounded, mixed, and sieved. Combine with honey and simmer over low fire until it can be formed into pills. Make pills the size of a Chinese quince seed. Take one pill, three times a day. It is very effective for both the elderly and children.
