Regarding Phlegm, Qi Deficiency, and Yin Fire:
Dai Yun stated that Ni (Hiccups/Eristhma) is mostly caused by phlegm and heat stirring up Stomach Fire, though sometimes it is due to cold coagulation obstructing Qi.
The *Neijing* states: "All upward rushing and reversing symptoms belong to Fire."
Ke Ni (Keening/Severe Hiccups): Sometimes caused by water fluid soaking the Lung leading to Qi reversal, with continuous sound; sometimes due to excessive talking causing Qi obstruction; sometimes due to swallowing errors causing choking; or due to eating dry food quickly causing Qi blockage.
All can produce continuous keening sounds, commonly known as "Chi Te" (Hiccups). Generally, this is due to the failure of smooth flow, causing Qi to reverse upwards to the throat and stop.
The *Qianjin Fang* states: If the pulse is scattered, Ke Ni is difficult to treat; if the pulse is floating and moderate, it is easy to treat; if the pulse is wiry and rapid, it is difficult to treat. It also states: If the pulse is rapid and intermittent (Dai), death ensues.
Observe whether there is Excess or Deficiency, Cold or Heat, and treat accordingly. For Deficiency, tonification is suitable; for Excess, emesis is suitable.
