Sudden nightmare (Mengyan) refers to a state of being constrained or suppressed. It implies that during sleep, one is oppressed by demonic influences, causing the body to lie still while consciousness remains unclear. This is all due to the soul and spirit wandering outside, being seized and recorded by other pathogenic factors.
For treating deficiency and emaciation, weak heart Qi, and frequent nightmares, it is suitable to take Fushen San (Poria Cocos Powder).
Fushen (Poria with Hostwood) (1 liang), Huangqi (Astragali Radix) (1 liang, crushed), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1 liang, honey-fried until slightly red and crushed), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (1 liang), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (1 liang, processed until cracked and crushed).
Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix) (1 liang, heart removed), Renshen (Ginseng Radix) (1 liang, radix tip removed), Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex) (1 liang).
The above medicines are pounded and sifted into a powder. Each dose is 5 qian. Boil in 1 da zhan (large cup) of water until reduced to 5 fen. Strain off the dregs. Take warm at any time.
For treating weak heart Qi with palpitations, mental confusion, forgetfulness, or waking from dreams with fright and nightmares, along with insufficient kidney Qi, it is suitable to take Renshen San (Ginseng Powder).

For treating sudden nightmare with unconsciousness and lack of awareness:
Take Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Fructus) powder, use a fine bamboo tube to blow it into both nostrils. The person will wake up immediately. It can be blown again within two or three days.
Another prescription:
Use brush hairs to prick both nostrils. For males, prick the left side; for females, the right side. Rotate and stimulate until the person wakes up.
Another prescription:
Use a reed tube to blow into both ears. Take 14 strands (two sevens) of the person's hair to make a rope, insert it into the nose. Alternatively, cut rooster comb blood and blow it into the nose using a tube.
Prescription for treating sudden nightmare:
Grind Xionghuang (Realgar) finely, and blow it into both nostrils using a reed tube. Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex) powder is also acceptable.
