The *Mai Jing* (Pulse Classic) states: In cases of jaundice, if the pulse at the Cun position near the palm is imperceptible, and the mouth and nose appear black, it is incurable. Generally, a large pulse indicates death, while a minute and fine pulse indicates survival. If there is no pulse and the breath from the nostrils is cold, it is also incurable. Whenever there is thirst with desire to drink water but difficulty in urination, jaundice will inevitably develop.
The *Nei Jing* (Inner Canon) states: All conditions involving dampness, swelling, and fullness belong to Spleen Earth. Jaundice is a disease where the muscles are necessarily flaccidly swollen and the complexion yellow. This is because damp-heat stagnates within the Spleen and Stomach; over time, it fails to dissipate, thus the color of Earth manifests on the skin and flesh. Since the Spleen governs the muscles and the Lung governs the skin and hair, when the Mother organ (Spleen) is deficient, it causes deficiency in the Child organ (Lung); when the Mother is diseased, the Child is also diseased. Therefore, internal pathology must manifest externally. The symptoms present in five types: Huang Han (Yellow Sweat), Huang Dan (Jaundice), Jiu Dan (Wine Jaundice), Gu Dan (Grain Jaundice), and Nv Lao Dan (Female Consumption Jaundice). Although these five are distinguished, they ultimately share no difference regarding chills or fever. Zhu Danxi stated: There is no need to strictly divide them into five; they are all caused by damp-heat, similar to fermentation using Qu (yeast). Thus it is said: To treat damp-heat without promoting urination is not the correct treatment. It is also said: Dampness in the Upper Jiao should be treated by inducing sweating; dampness in the Lower Jiao should be treated by promoting urination. Using both methods simultaneously allows for the dispersion of dampness from above and below, ensuring recovery.
