Qian Yi discussed: The aphonia caused by kidney deficiency resembles true aphonia. After vomiting, diarrhea, and severe illness, although the child has a voice but cannot speak, yet can swallow medicine, this is not aphonia, but kidney deficiency. This is because the kidney qi cannot connect upwards to the yang qi. Treatment should tonify the kidney, using Dihuang Wan (Cistanche Pill) (see the Deficiency-Cold section). Aphonia is usually an acute disease. (From "Ji Family Collection" regarding formulas for children's post-illness loss of voice.)
Suanzaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, dehusked, 1 qian), Baifuling (Poria, 0.5 qian), Zhusha (Cinnabar, 2 qian).
The above ingredients are ground into powder and formed into pills the size of a bullet. Take one pill each time, administered with Ginseng Decoction.
Shenghui Fang treats children who, after various illnesses, are six or seven years old and still unable to speak. Jitou Wan (Chicken Head Pill) formula:
Xiongjitou (Male chicken head, one, burnt to ash), Chan (Cicada slough, three pieces, slightly fried), Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted until slightly red, chopped), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix, dehearted), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis, chopped. Each 0.5 liang), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, dehearted, baked), Renshen (Ginseng Root, de-rhizome. Each 1 liang), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, chopped, slightly fried), Huangqi (Astragali Radix, chopped), Xiongnu (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 0.3 fen each).
The above herbs are crushed, sifted into powder. Mixed with refined honey to form pills the size of mung beans. Take five pills each time with gruel water. Adjust dosage according to the child's age and size; administer at any time. Qian Yi's supplementary formula is the same.
It is said: Long-term use yields results. For chicken and cicada, it is advisable to use those that have died naturally. Do not kill them fresh. As Sun Simiao said, "Killing life to seek life moves further away from life," which must be known.
(Phlegm-Stagnation Accumulation-Mass sections) Ten sections in total.
Mao Xiansheng discusses: Children may have milk accumulation syndrome. Whenever vomited milk or excreted stool has a foul sour odor, this indicates the syndrome. This occurs when the infant cries incessantly and the mother feeds immediately, causing indigestion. Over time, stagnation occurs, leading to cold stomach and this condition. Treatment: First use Dingxiang San (Clove Powder) (see Diarrhea-Dysentery section) to regulate the stomach, then purge solid accumulation using Niuhuang Wan (Calculus Bovis Pill) (see Excess-Heat section). After removing milk accumulation, use Yunqi San (Harmonizing Qi Powder) to tonify (see Stomach Qi Disharmony section). Regularly服用 Jianpi San (Spleen-Tonifying Powder) (see Stomach Qi Disharmony section) leads to recovery.
Mao Xiansheng discusses: Children may have food accumulation syndrome. The abdomen feels slightly hot at night, accompanied by vomiting or diarrhea. This is due to overeating followed by sleep. Treatment: Purge solid accumulation using Niuhuang Wan (Calculus Bovis Pill) to unblock; afterwards use Yunqi San (Harmonizing Qi Powder) to tonify qi. (Both formulas see previous text). Regularly服用 Wanling Wan (Ten Thousand Efficacy Pill) (see this section) leads to recovery.
Mao Xiansheng discusses: Children may have qi accumulation syndrome. Complexion is yellowish-white, lack of appetite, slight abdominal pain, body twisting while crying. This is due to prolonged discomfort from various diseases, transmitting to form qi accumulation. Treatment: Use Wanling Wan (Ten Thousand Efficacy Pill), Yunqi San (Harmonizing Qi Powder), Xingpi San (Spleen-Awakening Powder) (two formulas: one see Stomach Qi Disharmony section, one see Slow Spleen Wind section), and Jianpi San (Spleen-Tonifying Powder) alternately for regulation leads to recovery. (Other formulas see previous text).
Mao Xiansheng discusses: Children may have middle-spleen accumulation syndrome. Complexion is yellow like earth, or yellow with facial puffiness, slight pain above the umbilicus, warm belly, reduced diet, complaining of pain above the umbilicus and in the abdomen immediately after eating, undigested food, slight head heat. This is caused by first eating hard substances, or injury from cold substances affecting the spleen. Treatment: First use Qingjindan (Green Gold Pellet) (see this section) to purge spleen accumulation; afterwards use Yunqi San (Harmonizing Qi Powder) and Xingpi San (Spleen-Awakening Powder) to tonify. Regularly服用 Jianpi San (Spleen-Tonifying Powder) and Wanling Wan (Ten Thousand Efficacy Pill) leads to recovery. (Other formulas and sources same as before).
Mao Xiansheng discusses: Children may have deficiency-middle accumulation syndrome. Slight whole-body heat, no desire to eat, thirst, daytime lethargy, appearing asleep but not waking when held. This syndrome has multiple causes, resulting from prolonged diarrhea leading to deficiency. Treatment: First use Qingjindan (Green Gold Pellet) to clear all abdominal accumulation; afterwards use Yunqi San (Harmonizing Qi Powder) and Xingpi San (Spleen-Awakening Powder) for regulation. Regularly服用 Wanling Wan (Ten Thousand Efficacy Pill) and Bao Tong Wan (Child-Preserving Pill) (see All Malnutrition sections) for regulation leads to recovery. (Other formulas and sources same as before).
Mao Xiansheng discusses: Children may have excess accumulation syndrome. Constipation, wind-toxic sores and boils, throat closure with swollen cheeks, phlegm rattle in the throat. This is due to the child being inherently hungry and fierce, eating without limit, leading to the aforementioned syndromes. Treatment: First use Duoming San (Life-Retrieving Powder) (see Acute/Chronic Convulsion Wind section) to induce vomiting and purge hot phlegm; afterwards use Yunqi San (Harmonizing Qi Powder) and Xingpi San (Spleen-Awakening Powder) for regulation (two formulas see previous text). Regularly服用 Niuhuang Gao (Calculus Bovis Ointment) (see Diaphragm Heat section), Zhenxin Wan (Heart-Calming Pill) (see All Palpitation sections), and Tianzhuhuang San (Bambusae Resina Powder) (see Excess-Heat section) combined leads to recovery. The aforementioned various accumulation syndromes are described clearly, with descending grades of purgatives. If previous accumulation does not recede with regulation, such as blackening complexion, persistent diarrhea, abdominal distension, spontaneous sores on palms, coarse breathing, black stool, emaciation unable to sit or stand, fixed gaze, dry/black nose and mouth, these are death signs and untreatable.
Han Dong Wang Xiansheng's "Jiabao" discusses nine treatable pediatric accumulation diseases:
Facial puffiness is accumulation. Accumulation relates to the spleen. The spleen governs muscles, thus reflecting on the face, indicating spleen accumulation. Spleen belongs to Earth, which has no fixed shape, so swelling varies morning and evening, often worse in the morning; sleeping prevents spleen digestion, causing upper swelling. If this sign appears after illness, it is deficiency-middle accumulation. Suitable for spleen-regulating, accumulation-dispersing, qi-moving medicines.
Face lying flat on the ground is accumulation. Why? Because accumulation is in the spleen, it is cold accumulation. How to know? Spleen likes Earth, so knowing it is in the spleen. Cold belongs to Yin, so knowing it is caused by cold, hard food. Suitable for warming accumulation-dispersing qi medicines.
Abdominal distension is accumulation, located in the lung. How to know? Lung governs qi; upon receiving accumulation, qi becomes cold, causing distension and急促 breathing, indicating lung location. If abdominal distension, first regulate qi then move it; after moving, regulate qi again.
Urine like oil is accumulation, located in the small intestine. How to know? Accumulation receives from spleen, spleen transfers to heart; if heart is not touched, it enters small intestine. Small intestine is the fu organ of heart, so knowing it is in the small intestine. Regulate water passages, urine resembles rice washings or oil.
Jaundice is accumulation, damaging heart qi. Heart governs blood vessels, shading hair; affected by accumulation qi, it turns yellow, indicating heart damage. Suitable for Kongxin San (Empty Heart Powder) (formula not seen) taken on empty stomach, and accumulation-removing medicines. This person likely has intermittent fever.
Red and white dysentery is accumulation. Accumulation is in the lung, transmitted to large intestine, plus external cold injury. How to know? Lung governs West Geng-Xin Metal, color white; red posterior indicates external pathogen. Thus lung transmits to large intestine, causing red-white dysentery; suitable for post-treatment qi regulation.
Yellow-red eyes with blue pupils is accumulation, located in the liver. How to know? Liver governs East Jia-Yi Wood, color green; affected by accumulation qi, it becomes yellow-red. Blue pupils indicate eye belongs to five zang organs, liver is master; if liver receives accumulation, eyes turn blue. If liver accumulation transmits to gallbladder, bitter taste, anorexia, suitable for cooling medicines.
Whole-body puffiness is accumulation, not in zang but in fu. How to know? After previous treatment, medicine activation moves it out of zang to skin causing swelling. Only suitable for purging deficiency-middle accumulation medicines, then tonifying.
Frequent white stool is accumulation, caused by cold, located in spleen. How to know? Spleen governs transformation; cold accumulation in spleen causes slippery white stool, indicating spleen location. Suitable for first moving, then warming tonification.
Han Dong Wang Xiansheng's "Jiabao" discusses six untreatable pediatric accumulation diseases:
急促 breathing is lung accumulation. Lung governs qi;急促 breathing means lung qi exhaustion, face white, no blood color, untreatable.
Black face is kidney accumulation. Black face means kidney qi exhaustion, unable to distinguish good/bad, staring eyes without light, death within one day.
Vomiting hot qi is Ying (nutritive) accumulation. Untreatable because blood exhaustion is incurable. Blood governs heart; heart cannot control, thus hot qi continues.
Sores on hands and feet are Wei (defensive) accumulation. Wei is qi; stomach qi not generated, thus hand/foot sores. If wei exhaustion, qi does not return, death within half a day.
Nausea, vomiting, dry heaving is stomach accumulation. Why untreatable? Stomach governs food transformation; stomach exhaustion causes aversion/vomiting, untreatable. Person likely has undigested milk, dry heaving even without eating, cyan-yellow face, no blood color.
Diarrhea stops then resumes, accumulation bites spleen rotting. How to know spleen rot? Person passes white stool, undigested food, stops, then passes red-black stool and dies, indicating spleen rot untreatable.
Qian Yi discusses: Accumulation disease with warm breath, yellow-white face, dull eyes, excessive white sclera, excessive sleep, fear of eating, or sour-smelling stool, should grind accumulation, suitable Xiaojie Wan (Accumulation-Dissolving Pill) (see this section); severe cases use Baixingzi (White Cake Pill) to purge (see Convulsion Weakness section), then harmonize stomach.
"Tongying Baojian" discusses: Pediatric five accumulations are due to zang qi failing to circulate, accumulating in one place unmoving, hence called accumulation. Heart is Fuliang, above umbilicus; attacks heart upward, stomach downward; Spleen is Piqi, horizontal above stomach; Liver is Feiqi, left of umbilicus; Lung is Xiben, right side of umbilicus; Kidney is Bentun, below umbilicus. Each has changes, not formed by food, but qi accumulation. Zang belongs to Yin, thus stays in one place unmoving.
"Tongying Baojian": Pediatric Ju (Gathering) refers to fu qi lingering and gathering. Fu belongs to Yang, yang qi rotates constantly, thus gathering is not fixed in one place, attacking with abdominal pain. Accumulation-mass signs include yellow-thin complexion, sparse hair, lack of muscle growth, erect hair or edema, urgent abdomen with fatigue, mostly water qi.
"Wuguan Guan Zhenzhu Nang" distinguishes pediatric accumulation signs: Facial puffiness, abdominal distension, excessive sleep, urine like oil, diarrhea-dysentery, yellow eyes, sparse yellow hair, abdominal rumbling, vomiting.
"Wuguan Guan Zhenzhu Nang" discusses deficiency-middle accumulation: Any Jing (startle) deficiency-middle accumulation is caused by startle inducing, then re-startle activating. Stool passed is green and foul. Any deficiency-middle accumulation is caused by food injury leading to diarrhea and vomiting, gradually becoming weak, disease not cured, hence called deficiency accumulation. Also deficiency-middle accumulation, having accumulation but frequent purging/moving fails to remove it, leaving accumulation latent, hence also called deficiency-middle accumulation. If Jing accumulation is purged, stool follows startle turning green. If food accumulation, stool forms lumps. Any Gan (malnutrition) deficiency-middle accumulation is due to Gan disease turning to diarrhea, weakness with Gan not retreating, hence deficiency-middle. Passed stool wraps white.
"Xiao'er Xingzheng Lun" eight diseases. Yang Xuancuo says: Excessive vomiting, excessive diarrhea, excessive fatigue, excessive heat.
Facial swelling, hand/foot swelling is deficiency-middle accumulation. Abdominal distension, anorexia is stomach accumulation. Face down eating soil/charcoal, dysentery pain, large abdomen accumulation. Dark face, fatigue with closed eyes is spleen accumulation. Urine like oil, hand/foot swelling is kidney accumulation. Thirst, persistent diarrhea is bladder accumulation. Abdominal rumbling, red-yellow urine is small intestine accumulation. Excessive vomiting, anorexia is upper diaphragm accumulation.
"Huiyan Guanzheng" zang-fu accumulation signs: Whole-body puffiness is spleen accumulation, long-term purging fails, called deficiency-middle accumulation. First collapse qi, then purge. Abdominal swelling, yellow limbs receives water qi, must purge. Urine like rice washings, liver receives accumulation, this sign uses purging. Yellow hair indicates Gan-Lao syndrome about to emerge, back accumulation, uses purging. Yellow eyes, nasal discharge indicates liver-lung accumulation, called Feng-Gan syndrome, should purge. Red-white stagnant dysentery indicates internal zang-fu accumulation, uses purging. Intestinal rumbling indicates qi-worm syndrome, uses purging. Excessive vomiting, or recent acid-smelling breath can be purged. If already treated, do not hastily purge, fear slow spleen, just regulate. Face down lying indicates worms gathering in heart, uses purging.
"Bao Sheng" discusses pediatric accumulation pulse: (Pulse deep and solid.) Accumulation is children indulging in toxic foods like melons, plums, peaches, fruits, fatty, slippery, sticky substances, brewing into accumulation. Signs include yellow-white face, brittle erect hair, abdominal distension with rumbling, face lying on ground, urine like oil, frequent slippery movements, chronic red-white dysentery, all are accumulation diseases. If child is fat and solid, suitable Congtang Wan (Scallion Soup Pill) to purge (see Startle Accumulation section same as Ji Shi), then Yinbai San (Silver White Powder) to tonify (see Milk Lump section. "Yujue" same).
"Bao Sheng" discusses pediatric accumulation death signs: Pulse surging and large, passing black blood, emaciated unable to walk, sitting long suffering accumulation. Abdomen urgent like drum, neck soft, limbs cold, jaw locked not eating. All are death signs, cannot use medicine to save.
Mao Xiansheng Song for Children Initially Receiving Various Accumulations:
Pediatric various accumulation diseases, still due to nursing. First starts with abdominal distension, then facial puffiness. Excessive sleep face on ground, urine like clear oil. Jaundice plus slippery diarrhea. Vomiting abdominal rumbling. White dysentery plus red, named for yellow eyes.
Mao Xiansheng Song for Children Again Receiving Accumulations:
Children receiving various accumulations, facial swelling abdominal distension due to food injury. Abdominal rumbling face on ground, excessive thirst jaundice plus dysentery. Yellow eyes vomiting plus excessive sleep, urine like rice washings Gan active accumulation.
Mao Xiansheng Song for Untreatable Pediatric Accumulation Diseases:
Obtaining pediatric various accumulation diseases, hundred difficult to save one life. Stomach accumulation often generates palm sores, Gan-Lao vomiting/diarrhea should be hard to fix. Child born with five-colored evil, thin and lonely no recovery day. Long diarrhea stops then suddenly resumes, hot qi rushing from mouth. Hand/foot sores morning/evening heat, without bitter drugs mostly sudden death.
Mao Xiansheng Song for Six Untreatable Pediatric Accumulations:
Six pediatric accumulations are ominous, black face thin evil drugs hard to push. Long diarrhea many methods cannot stop, hand/foot heart pain life must end. Cheek red extreme heat plus long startle, hot qi from mouth life still exhausted.
"Yujue" Song for Pediatric Accumulation Injury Signs:
Accumulation injury abdominal pain frequent crying,急促 breathing high phlegm milk/food rare. Diarrhea-dysentery irregular frequent fever, yellow face puffiness originally spleen injury.
This illness look deficiency/excess and purge, then regulate stomach qi is excellent. Another version says: Look deficiency/excess first take Congtang Wan (see Startle Accumulation section same as Ji Shi), then Yinbai San (see Milk Lump section) to tonify.
"Qianjin Fang" treats pediatric solid accumulation, milk/food indigestion, heart-abdominal pain. Niuhuang Shuangwan (Double Calculus Bovis Pill) formula:
