太阳经,是表的表层,行于身体背部;阳明经,是表的里层,行于身体前面;少阳经,是半表半里,行于两胁旁边。超过这个范围则是少阴、太阴、厥阴,都进入脏腑成为里证。

There are five methods for treating childhood exogenous febrile diseases (Shanghan):
The first is the method of releasing the exterior: Symptoms include a floating pulse, fever, body pain, aversion to cold, stiffness and rigidity of the neck and occiput, wheezing and cough, headache, spasm and tightness of the four limbs, normal mouth and tongue, non-deep pulse, no thirst, and normal urination and defecation. Formulas used belong to the category of Ma Huang Tang (Ephedra Decoction), Gui Zhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction), Da Qing Long Tang (Major Blue Green Dragon Decoction), etc.
The second is the method of resolving the muscle layer: The pulse at the cun, guan, and chi positions is long in all three; symptoms include eye pain, dry nose, and the desire to rinse the mouth with water but not swallow it. Formulas used belong to the category of Ge Gen Tang (Kudzu Root Decoction), Sheng Ma Ge Gen Tang (Cimicifuga and Kudzu Root Decoction), etc.
The third is the method of harmonizing: The pulse is neither floating nor deep; symptoms include alternating chills and fever, vomiting, hypochondriac pain, chest fullness, deafness, sweating on the head or night sweats, dizziness, and bitter taste in the mouth. Formulas used belong to the category of Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction), Da Chai Hu Tang (Major Bupleurum Decoction), etc.
The fourth is the method of purging the interior: The pulse is deep and forceful; symptoms include tidal fever with aversion to heat, abdominal pain and diarrhea, sweating on the palms and soles, dry throat, dry and cracked teeth, blurred vision, delirium and mania, lower abdominal fullness, passage of clear yellow watery stool, insomnia, polyuria, spontaneous sweating, while external symptoms such as headache and fever have ceased. The fifth is the method of rescuing the interior: The pulse is deep and weak; symptoms include passage of undigested food in stool, clear and profuse urine, cold extremities, vomiting of clear fluid and saliva, aversion to cold on the back, and curling up in bed. Formulas used belong to the category of Si Ni Tang (Frigid Extremities Decoction), Bai Tong Tang (White Connective Decoction), etc.
Ma Huang Tang (Ephedra Decoction): Treats damage to the Ying (Nutrient) level of the Taiyang (Greater Yang) meridian by cold pathogen, characterized by fever, anhidrosis (absence of sweating), and aversion to cold.
Ingredients: Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba) (use less for deficient constitution), Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice Root) (equal parts). Decoct in water and take orally. Resolution occurs with sweating.
Gui Zhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction): Treats damage to the Wei (Defensive) level of the Taiyang meridian by wind pathogen, characterized by fever, spontaneous sweating, and aversion to wind.

Ingredients: Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba) (8 fen), Shi Gao (Gypsi Fibrosus), Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) (1 qian), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) (7 grains), Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice Root) (5 fen). Decoct in water and take warm.

Ingredients: Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba), Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum) (1 qian each), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (5 fen each), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus) (12 grains). If accompanied by Yangming symptoms, add Ge Gen (Puerariae Radix) and Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix). If aversion to cold and other symptoms persist, use Da Chai Hu Tang (Major Bupleurum Decoction).
The Taiyang (Greater Yang) meridian is the outermost layer of the exterior, running along the back of the body; the Yangming (Yang Brightness) meridian is the inner layer of the exterior, running along the front of the body; the Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) meridian is half-exterior and half-interior, running alongside the hypochondrium. When using any of the three Cheng Qi Decoctions, one must press the child's abdomen from chest to belly. If there is hardness that cannot be touched, and considering whether the tongue coating is dry or slippery, differentiate accordingly. Decoct well, add two spoons of Yi Tang (Maltose), boil once more. Do not use Yi Tang if diarrhea is present. Excessive sweating causes depletion; Yin qi fails to nourish muscles and bones, causing pain. Yang deficiency leads to a slow pulse; post-sweating state leads to a weak pulse. This formula establishes Middle Qi, promotes the growth of Ying and Wei, circulates fluids, thereby strengthening the exterior and curing body pain naturally.
Li Zhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction): Treats Taiyin disease with spontaneous diarrhea, no thirst, excess cold, and abdominal pain.
Ingredients: Tian Ma Shen (Codonopsis Radix, here referred to as Tiao Shen/Party Ginseng), Jiao Zhu (Fried Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (2 qian each), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice Root) (1 qian each). Decoct in water and take warm or cool.
