(This is an explanation of the diagram regarding the hundred divisions of day and night and the twelve double-hour fixed-body system.)
The Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian (Hand-Taiyin Fei Jing) pairs with the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian (Hand-Yangming Dachang Jing), forming a exterior-interior relationship. The hand is designated as the upper section. The Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian has five acupoints, which are Yin points. Starting from the lateral side of the radial finger (index finger) at the corner of the nail, the points are Shangyang (LI1), Erjian (LI2), Sanjian (LI3), Hegu (LI4), Yangxi (LI5), and Quchi (LI11). The Large Intestine belongs to Metal. In the Earthly Branches, it corresponds to Mao (Rabbit); in the Heavenly Stems, it corresponds to Geng. This is referred to as the pairing of Yin-Yang exterior-interior and Earthly Branches-Heavenly Stems.
The Hand-Jueyin Pericardium Meridian (Hand-Juexin Baojing) pairs with the Hand-Shaoyang Triple Energizer Meridian (Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Jing), forming a exterior-interior relationship. The hand is designated as the middle section. The Hand-Jueyin Pericardium Meridian has five acupoints, which are Yin points. These are the twelve meridians of the three Yin and three Yang of the hands and feet, comprising sixty-six acupoints, including the Jing-River-Well-Source-He-Sea points (Five Shu Points), paired with the Five Elements: Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth. The flow and distribution of meridians involve either crossing or direct paths, relating to exterior-interior and internal-external relationships, as well as the pairing of Earthly Branches and Heavenly Stems. Various schools of acupuncture classics and diagrams have analyzed and explained these concepts. Therefore, I have summarized the general principles here and consulted them with my teacher, verifying what was beyond my capability. For aspects where my understanding differed, I received further instruction and guidance, resulting in a sudden clarity, like ice melting or water bursting forth. With knowledge now in my heart, I am fortunate not to be self-contradictory. Whenever needling acupoints, one must rely on specific meridians, investigate the associated diseases and syndromes, observe daily and hourly taboos, and determine tonification and sedation based on deficiency and excess conditions. These matters must be carefully examined. If one thoroughly understands the differentiation of meridians and the locations of acupoints, such practice will rarely fail (one out of a hundred times).
