(Ben Jing Xia Pin)
[Flavor and Nature] Bitter, neutral, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats oozing sores (Jinyin), scabies (Sao), carbuncles (Ju), and hemorrhoids; kills three types of intestinal parasites (San Chong).
[Verification] It is said: It originates from the valleys of Donglai and is found everywhere. In mid-spring, it spreads over the ground, preferring to grow by roadsides. The seedling resembles Dianthus superbus (Qumai), with a weak stem and short nodes. The nodes are purple-red like the shaft of a hairpin. The leaves are slender and green, resembling bamboo. Flowers emerge between the nodes, very fine, slightly yellowish-green or pale red, resembling the flowers of Polygonum tinctorium (Baolan). It then bears small fruits, and the root...
[Commentary] It is said: The Jingfu Palace Fu states: "Here there are forbidden tablets." Xu Guang commented: "Forbidden tablets refer to seals and inscriptions on doors and gates, named according to the morphological manifestations and syndromes treated." Generally, the human body has 84,000 pores, each acting as a gate corresponding to opening and closing. For morphological syndromes such as oozing sores and scabies, these pores are exclusively sealed. Lingzhi (Polyporus umbellatus) spreads and creeps, with short nodes and flowers blooming at every node, resembling sealing and unsealing, unsealing and sealing. Although this is an explanation based on the method of treating by simulating morphology (Xiang Xing Cong Zhi Fa), it also reflects the method of opposing morphology (Xiang Xing Dui Dai Fa). (It is suitable for conditions caused by Fire-Heat punishing Metal, resulting in oozing sores and scabies; it is also suitable for acne, pustules, and heat rash that are hidden and about to erupt, as well as cases where pores are closed and solid, desiring to disperse fluids into sweat. However, due to its bitter and neutral flavor, its efficacy is slightly inferior when applied to conditions where Cold is the fundamental nature; if the disease opposes its fundamental nature, injuring Yang Qi, or has already transformed into Heat, while exterior pathogens have not yet entered the interior and still desire to be resolved through the pivot mechanism, the effect is quite rapid.)

[Flavor and Nature] Bitter, cold, slightly toxic.
[Indications] Primarily kills three types of intestinal parasites (San Chong), expels toxic vapors, clears stomach heat; beneficial for men, detrimental to women.
[Verification] It is said: It originates from the valleys of Shicheng, as well as Hanzhong, Jianping, Yidu, Fangzhou, and Jinzhou. It grows in the soil of bamboo forests, formed from the residual Qi of bamboo, accumulating from fallen parts. It lacks stems and vines, does not connect, resembles millet grains, and is round like Polyporus (Zhu Ling), with black skin and white flesh, very solid. Processing method: Soak in Licorice water (Gancao Shui) overnight, take out, steam from Si hour to Wei hour, dry in the sun. Mix with wine to moisten, steam again, dry in the sun for use. Litchi fruit (Lishi), Magnolia bark (Houpo), Artemisia root (Haogen), and Genkwa flower (Yuanhua) act as its guides (Shi); it is incompatible with Kudzu root (Gegen).
[Commentary] It is said: Lei Wan is Zhu Ling. It possesses the spiritual energy of seasonal changes, falling and then vibrating to regenerate, hence the name Lei Wan. When thunder sounds, all things respond simultaneously, thus it opposes the three parasites and toxic vapors that are active in darkness. Its flavor is bitter, its nature is cold, making it suitable for stomach heat as the cause, and various latent or hidden heat syndromes. It is beneficial for men but detrimental to women because the Zhen trigram represents Thunder and symbolizes the eldest son. As stated, formulas gather by category, and things group by kind; determining hardness and softness generates auspiciousness and inauspiciousness. (Generally, substances are formed by material quality or condensed by Qi, such as Poria (Fuling) originating from pine trees, and Lei Wan arising from bamboo. Among trees, those enduring winter cold, with solid and knotty fruits, only Pine possesses the nature of hiding, hence retaining the name "Ling"; among herbs, those growing in winter, hollow and verdant, only Bamboo fits the image of Zhen Thunder, hence transforming into the name "Wan". Their Qi categories resonate differently: one is static, upholding the integrity of a scholar-official; the other is dynamic, displaying the vigorous power of a gentleman. Their functions have their respective emphases.)
