[Recorded in the Middle Grade of Bie Lu]
[Aroma and Flavor] Pungent, greatly warm, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats sudden cold, cold rebellion in the stomach, abdominal pain due to cholera-like disorder (Huoluan).
[Analysis] It is said: Tang poetry states, "At the tip of cardamom, it is early February." *Guihai Yuheng Zhi* states: Red cardamom flowers grow in clusters, leaves are slender like green reeds, and they begin to sprout only at the end of spring. Before flowering, no single stalk emerges; it is wrapped in large bracts (tuo), and when the bracts split, the flowers appear. One spike bears dozens of stamens/pistils (rui), pale red and vibrant like peach or apricot blossoms. When heavy, they hang down like grapes, or resemble fire-colored coral necklaces, or the shape of cut-color phoenix branches. It has flowers but no fruit, differing from grass cardamom (Caodoukou). Each stamen/pistil center has two petals joined together, used in poetry to express longing, such as flatfish or intertwined branches. *Zixia Ji* states: There are round, red beans with black tips, universally called "Xiangsi Zi" (Love Beans), which is an alternative name for Hongdoukou. Its wood, when cut obliquely, shows grain patterns and can be used for backgammon boards or pipa bodies; the tree is large and white; its branches and leaves resemble locust trees; its flowers are indistinguishable from soapberry flowers; its seeds resemble broad beans, contained within pods, entirely red throughout. Li Shan states: Its fruit is red like coral. Xu's *Bijing* states: In Lingnan and Min regions, there is a Xiangsi tree that produces seeds after many years, red like soybeans, hence named Xiangsi Zi. Each tree yields several hu of seeds, not Hongdou. *Bicong* argues that interpreting Wen Tingyun's poem "Exquisite dice set with red beans, knowing how deep the bone-penetrating longing is" as referring to Xiangsi Zi being Hongdou is also incorrect. *Fangwu Lueji* states: Hongdou flowers are white, fruits are like soybeans but red, named for their similarity, and leaves resemble holly.
[ ] Says: Gao (High) means lofty, sharing the meaning with Cang (Granary). Liang (Good) means virtuous; Jiang (Ginger) means boundary. The flavor is pungent and greatly warm, addressing sudden cold as the etiology, and cold rebellion in the stomach and abdominal pain in Huoluan as the syndrome. The Classics state: The Spleen and Stomach are the officials of the granaries. If the pathways become blocked and不通 (unobstructed), the form will suffer greatly. Who is the good physician in such profound distress?
(It possesses the dispersing and astringing properties of Doukou, the drying strength of Roukou, and the opening properties of Baikou; all three are grass fruits. This one alone is a grass stem, allowing the Lower Jiao to borrow this power to function as the official of drainage channels.)
