Many suffer from this disease. Those who are thin and plump occasionally get it, but this is also due to the cause of robust physique with deficient Qi (vital energy), with the key lying in Qi. Yanxiu said: In the northwest, where the climate is cold, being struck by wind pathogen indeed occurs; however, in the southeast, where the climate is warm and dampness is prevalent, the diseases there are not caused by wind. Dampness generates phlegm, phlegm generates heat, and heat generates wind; the key lies in dampness. Danxi said: There are cases due to Qi deficiency, blood deficiency, or severe phlegm accumulation, all of which manifest as "wind" patterns of deficiency. Upon deep investigation and discussion, ancient texts describe the symptoms, while theories from Hejian (Liu Wansu) and others below explain the etiology. What is called external contraction of wind pathogen must occur due to the weakness of primordial essence and disharmony of Ying (nutritive) and Wei (defensive) qi, followed by external infection. Cases attributed to heat, Qi stagnation, or dampness may not absolutely lack external pathogens contributing to the illness. The treatment principle is: treat the branch (acute symptoms) in emergencies, and treat the root (underlying cause) in stable conditions. For example, if a patient suddenly collapses upon onset, loses consciousness, and has abundant salivary phlegm, urgently use Tongguan San (Passing Through Obstruction Powder) and Huafeng Dan (Wind-Resolving Pill) to open the orifices. If the tongue is stiff and speechless, and the pulse at both Cun (inch) positions is floating, large, and excess, urgent emesis should be induced to curb the pathological momentum. Or, if the Renying (Stomach Meridian pulse at the neck) is tight and full, and the six pulses are floating and wiry, use Xiao Xuming Tang (Minor Continuation of Life Decoction) to release the exterior. For those affected internally affecting the Zang organs, treat according to the respective meridians, which is what is meant by "treating the branch in emergencies." If detected early before onset, or treated after stabilization, one should clear heat, resolve phlegm, and tonify blood and Qi, addressing each specific location.
"Mai Jue Ju Yao" states: Wind-stroke presents with a floating and slippery pulse, accompanied by phlegm and Qi issues; if the pulse is deep and slippery, do not treat it merely as wind. This is because external Bi (obstruction) syndrome, Wei (flaccidity) syndrome, Qi syncope, Spleen deficiency, food retention, and excessive vomiting can all cause sudden collapse and inability to move limbs. Among these, Zhong Qi (Qi disorder/impaction) is particularly severe and mimics wind-stroke; thus, pulse differentiation must be cautious. Floating, wiry, tight, and surging pulses indicate wind-stroke; deep and hidden pulses indicate Zhong Qi. Using wind-dispelling herbs for Zhong Qi can be fatal. If differentiation is unclear, it is better to first use Shunqi San (Qi-Smoothin Powder) and then use Shufeng herbs, as treating wind also requires regulating Qi.
To treat Po Tou Feng (Break-head wind/headache): Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, fire-roasted) and Cao Wu (Aconiti Radix, processed), ground into powder together, taken with warm wine, until sweating occurs.
Another prescription:
Yujiao (Fish Maw), roasted until carbonized (charred but retaining properties), ground into powder, taken with hot wine, leads to recovery.
To treat men and women with weak Qi and Blood, rising Phlegm-Fire, left-side paralysis and right-side hemiplegia, pain in arms, body, hands, and feet: Take two cups of human milk, preferably sweet and white; take one cup of pear juice crushed from pears. Pour into a silver or tin vessel, place in a water bath, and boil until hot. When yellow foam rises and separates to reveal the green liquid underneath, it is ready. Take once daily after the fifth watch (early morning). It can eliminate phlegm, tonify deficiency, generate blood, and prolong life. This is "using humans to supplement humans," and its efficacy is unsurpassed. Even patients with hemiplegia have found this prescription effective.
Guben Jiu (Root-Fortifying Wine): Sheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) 2 liang, Shu Dihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) 2 liang, Tianmendong (Asparagi Radix) 1 liang, Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix) 2 liang, Baifuling (Poria) 2 liang, Renshen (Ginseng Radix) 2 liang. Place good wine in ten large ceramic bottles. Slice the above herbs and soak them inside for three days. Boil using mild and strong fire for one to two hours, until the wine turns black. If there is upper heat, remove 5 qian of Renshen. If there is lower deficiency-cold, stir-fry Jiuzi (Epimedii Fructus) until yellow, grind into fine powder, and take on an empty stomach, 3-5 cups per dose, using 1 qian or 5 fen of the fried powder per cup. The benefits are too numerous to list. Radish must be strictly avoided.
To treat Phlegm: Jupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, select authentic aged Chendu citrus, soak in warm water, remove the white pith, keep only the red peel), Gancao (Licorice Root) 4 liang, Salt 4 liang. Use five bowls of water, simmer slowly until dry, bake dry, and grind into powder. Take with plain boiled water. Physicians of the world only know how to use Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) and Nanting (Arisaematis Rhizoma), which is hardly worth mentioning compared to this method.
Formula for Tan Jue (Phlegm Syncope) (For severe syncope, emesis is preferred): Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) 8 liang, Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) 4 liang, Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried) 2 liang. Grind into fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose.
To treat Wind-stroke with loss of voice and all wind disorders: Use Bai Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus) 7 pieces, grind into powder, mix with wine and take, immediate effect.
To treat Wind-stroke: If vomiting and diarrhea occur, jaw clamps shut, preventing medication intake. Use Baiyang Mo (Populus Alba Bark Powder), amount unspecified, rub against teeth. The teeth will immediately open because sourness causes contraction/astringency, forcing the teeth apart.
To treat Pian Feng (Hemiplegia/Palsy): Use Xianlingpi (Epimedii Folium) 1 jin, finely chopped, soaked in wine in a silk bag. Soak for 3 days in spring/summer, 5 days in autumn/winter. Seal tightly multiple times to prevent gas escape. Drink gradually, keeping the patient slightly intoxicated, but not drunk. Over time, efficacy is assured. Avoid letting chickens or dogs see the preparation process.
Yujin Wan (Curcuma Pill): Treats manic-depressive psychosis lasting years without cure. Yujin (Curcumae Radix, authentic Sichuan origin is best) 7 liang, Mingfan (Alumen) [missing character] liang. Grind into powder, take with Mint decoction water. Or...
To treat Wind-stroke: Whole body cold, jaw locked, unconscious. Duohuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) 4 liang (remove rhizome), decoct in four large cups of good wine. Divide into 2-3 doses, take hot.
Shiguo Gong Yao Jiu (Minister Shi’s Medicinal Wine): Specifically treats hemiplegia due to wind-phlegm, spasticity and contracture of limbs, difficulty walking, etc.
Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, remove rhizome) 2 liang, Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix, remove rhizome) 2 liang, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 2 liang, Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) 2 liang, Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 2 liang, Hu Jinggu (Pantheris Os, crushed and roasted) 1 pair, Bixie (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma, crushed and roasted) 2 liang, Biejia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum) 2 liang, Chuan Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, remove rhizome) 2 liang, You Songjie (Taxilli Ramulus, crushed) 2 liang, Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex, stir-fried with ginger juice), Wancan Sha (Bombyx Batryticatus, stir-fried yellow) 2 liang, Can'erzi (Xanthii Fructus, crushed) 4 liang, Gouqizi (Lycii Fructus) 5 liang, Gan Qiegen (Solanum Melongena Root, steamed over rice) 8 liang. Place the above herbs in a cloth bag into a large jar. Add 36 jin of good wine. Seal tightly. Soak for 14 days. Place the jar in a pot, suspend and boil for the duration of three incense sticks. Bury in soil for 3 days to remove "fire toxicity."
Drink appropriately at Chen (7-9 AM), Wu (11 AM-1 PM), and evening times.
Duliang Wan (Duliang Pill): Treats head wind pain, very effective. Wash Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), refine honey to make pills the size of bullet seeds. Take each time mixed with Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica) decoction. If the headache is due to deficiency, take Renshen (Ginseng Radix) 1 liang and Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) 5 qian, decocted in water, which is excellent.
