Discussion
Women who have just given birth lose excessive blood, leading to dryness and scarcity of body fluids, with both yin and yang deficient. Generally, for illnesses such as wind-stroke, cold damage, or seasonal epidemics, although sweating is indicated, Ma Huang (Ephedra) must be used cautiously. Sweating should not be excessive; judge according to circumstances. Also, for postpartum diseases, a large pulse is contraindicated. Postpartum coma results from originally weak qi, exacerbated by excessive blood loss, leaving qi without mastery, spirit insufficient, and yin-yang disordered, known as Blood Syncope. Immediately fumigate the nose with charcoal fire thrown into vinegar, and blow a small amount of Ban Xia powder into the nose to regain consciousness.
Dang Gui San (Angelica Powder)
Postpartum qi and blood are both deficient. Do not tonify heavily, lest it increase exogenous heat and cause other diseases. It is best to keep lochia flowing freely.
