Essence (Jing), Qi, and Spirit (Shen) are the three treasures of the human body. Regarding the biochemical generation of congenital constitution, Essence generates Qi, and Qi generates Spirit; regarding the functional application of acquired constitution, Spirit commands Qi, and Qi commands Essence. The five Zang organs of the human body each store specific substances: the Heart stores Spirit, and the Kidney stores Essence. Essence is stored in the Kidney but is governed by the Heart. If the Heart Sovereign is tranquil and stable, and Kidney Essence remains unmoved, this constitutes a state of health and balance. Your constitution presents with deficiency of both Qi and Yin, resulting in a failure of mutual assistance between Kan (Kidney/Water) and Li (Heart/Fire). Due to Heart Qi deficiency, one is easily agitated; due to Kidney deficiency, there is a failure to secure and contain. Spirit moves restlessly within, and Essence escapes downwards; this is the origin of the old ailment of nocturnal emission. Previously, with the progressive administration of tonic paste, emissions gradually decreased, and the medicine responded effectively, which was not without merit. However, mending the pen after the sheep is lost is too late, and once lost, the sheep cannot be recovered. After prolonged emissions, Kidney Yin has been severely damaged. The Kidney governs the bones, and marrow resides within the bones; marrow is the essence of the Kidney. The waist is the external manifestation of the Kidney, and the spine is the pathway of the Kidney channel. With the loss of Kidney Essence and emptiness of bone marrow, back pain and soreness of the waist are inevitably seen. The Liver belongs to Yi Wood, housing the Yang Soul within; the Gallbladder belongs to Jia Wood, containing Ministerial Fire within. Since Kidney Water is deficient, how can it nourish Liver Wood? When Liver Wood loses its nourishment, Water fails to control Fire, Ministerial Fire fails to submerge, and Liver Yang tends to ascend. When the clear space of the head is not clear, dizziness occurs; when the orifices are obstructed, tinnitus results. Yin deficiency below and floating fire above lead to excess above and deficiency below, which is also inevitable. Although symptoms vary, treating the root is the only path. Grasping the key outline, tonifying Essence is paramount. To tonify Essence, one must calm the Spirit; to calm the Spirit, one must benefit Qi; treating disease requires seeking its root. Strengthening Water to nourish Wood, and nourishing Yin to submerge Yang, tonifying the Mother when the Child is deficient—this is an ancient method. Adhering to the previous intent, a new prescription is formulated again: benefiting Qi and calming the Spirit, nourishing Yin and securing containment. Imitating the treatment principle of "Yi-Gui Tong Yuan" (Liver-Kidney sharing the same source), planning for the solidification and mutual assistance of Kan and Li, adding substances from animals and humans (flesh-and-blood sentient beings) to fill and replenish essence and marrow, restoring lost primordial essence, and supplementing the emptiness of the Eight Extraordinary Vessels. This aims for gradual daily improvement and a permanent solution. Whether appropriate, please correct me, you who are highly knowledgeable.

Mr. Luo
Initially suffered from hemorrhoids and fistulas, subsequently developed insomnia. Hemorrhoids and fistulas damage Yin; Yin damage affects Qi, leading to insufficiency of Qi and Yin. Qi cannot coordinate with Yang; Yin deficiency extends to Yang, thus causing insomnia. There are many causes of insomnia, but broadly they relate to the Heart and Kidney. In the Li trigram (Heart), there is one Yin line, which is the root of Yin. When this Yin root descends, it generates Water Essence. In the Kan trigram (Kidney), there is one Yang line, which is the root of Yang. When this Yang root ascends, it becomes the mother of Fire. When Kan and Li interact mutually, and Water and Fire harmonize, Yang entering Yin leads to sleep, and Yang exiting Yin leads to waking. Insufficient Kidney Yin means Water cannot assist Fire; Heart Fire cannot descend to reach the Kidney, and Kidney Yin cannot ascend to assist the Heart. Yang Essence does not ascend, Water Essence does not descend, Yin and Yang do not intersect, thus causing insomnia. This is the root of insomnia. The Liver belongs to Yi Wood, housing the Yang Soul internally; the Gallbladder belongs to Jia Wood, containing Ministerial Fire internally. In healthy individuals during night sleep, the Soul returns to the Liver, and Yang hides within Yin. Consumption of Kidney Yin means Water cannot nourish Wood; the Liver cannot store its Yang Soul, and the Gallbladder cannot seal its Ministerial Fire. Spirit is startled, fire floats upward, also causing insomnia. This is the concurrent symptom of insomnia. Li resides in the Central Palace, Kan resides at the lower extreme. Located in the middle and responsible for ascending and descending are the Spleen and Stomach. The Stomach benefits from unblocking, and the Spleen benefits from robust transportation. If the Stomach loses flow, the Middle Jiao becomes blocked, unable to perform ascending and descending functions. The pathways between upper and lower are cut off; seeking intersection of Heart and Kidney would indeed be difficult. Thus, the Classic states: "If the Stomach is not harmonious, sleep is uneasy." Disharmony of the Stomach is the branch manifestation of insomnia. Daoist texts say: Li is the middle daughter, Kan is the middle son, and Kun Earth acts as the mediator, called the Yellow Matron. This refers to that. Complicating various theories, prescribing formulas based on odd and even numbers, benefiting Qi to absorb the Yang root, nourishing Yin to moisten the Water mother, raising Wu (Stomach Earth) and lowering Ji (Spleen Earth), taking from Kan to fill Li. Benefiting Qi serves to calm the Spirit; nourishing Yin also helps to nourish Wood. Treating both root and branch simultaneously, hoping for success. Whether appropriate, please correct me, you who are highly knowledgeable.

Mr. Zhang
Every winter, coughs inevitably occur, accompanied by shortness of breath and unrest. It lightens when the weather warms and worsens when encountering cold. This is caused by Yang deficiency with retained fluid retention. Yang represents the Way of Heaven, Yin represents the Way of Earth. Humans disdain Yin and honor Yang. The Classic states: "The Yang Qi of man is like the Heaven and the Sun; if it loses its proper place, longevity is shortened and brilliance is obscured." The constitution is inherently Yang deficient, with diseases in both Spleen and Kidney. Kidney deficiency leads to water flooding; Spleen deficiency leads to dampness accumulation. Water and dampness remain stagnant, accumulating over years into phlegm-fluid retention, forming nests, blocking Qi mechanism, occupying positions like mountain passes. Upward, it hinders the right-descending pathway of Lung Metal; downward, it initiates the reversal of Chong Qi. Failure to descend and fail to grasp leads to shortness of breath. Fluid retention is a Yin pathogen; encountering cold makes Yin follow Yang, like a tiger borrowing the wind's power; encountering warmth makes Yin weak and Yang strong, and the pathogenic force gradually diminishes. Phlegm-fluid originates from Earth dampness, and Earth dampness originates from Water cold. To transform phlegm, first dry Earth dampness; to dry Earth dampness, first warm Water cold. Books say: treat external fluid retention via Spleen, internal fluid retention via Kidney. The Lung governs Qi, the Stomach is the source of transforming Qi, and the Kidney is the cavity for grasping Qi. Failure of Lung descent is blamed on Kidney grasping; failure of Kidney grasping is blamed on Fire decline. To descend Lung Qi, first harmonize the Stomach; to grasp Kidney Qi, first warm Yang. Books say: treat upper asthma via Lung, lower asthma via Kidney. The syndrome belongs to Yang deficiency; medicines should be warming and tonifying. Now proposing to warm the Kidney and grasp Qi; warming the Kidney strengthens the Spleen. Harmonizing the Stomach and directing rebellion downward, harmonizing the Stomach also assists in purging the Lung. Only when Earth is warm and Water is warm can fluid retention have no source; when the Stomach descends and Metal clears, Qi will not rebel. When Qi levels and fluid transforms, cough heals itself. The syndrome involves the root; medicine cannot cure in one step. Imitating former sages' formulas after careful consideration, briefly stating the cause of illness for your decision.
