When a woman's menstruation has ceased for three months and one wishes to verify pregnancy:
Chuanxiong Rhizome (Sanqu, 1.5 liang, used raw, not subjected to fire processing)
Grind the above into powder. On an empty stomach, take one fangcun bi (a square-inch measure) of the powder mixed with strong decoction of Ai Ye (Artemisia argyi Leaf). If slight movement is felt in the abdomen, pregnancy is confirmed.
For treating exterior contraction of wind-cold causing high fever throughout the body, dizziness, and vertigo. Or due to washing the neck and back and exposing oneself to wind to cool down, resulting in dizziness, headache, worsened aversion to cold, and even chest oppression and irritability.
Pregnant women should not easily administer other preparations; it is advisable to use this formula to disperse exterior pathogens. It also treats phlegm-fluid retention, epigastric discomfort with palpitations, vomiting and inability to eat, and abdominal fullness. This medicine is extremely mild and harmonious.
For pregnant women suffering from aversion to cold, high fever, headache, and body ache due to cold invasion: add Chuanxiong Rhizome (Sanqu), Baizhu (Bai Zhi), Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger), and Cong Bai (Scallion White), decoct together. A slight sweat indicates resolution. (See the "Shanghan" category for the formula.)
For pregnant women suffering from summerheat injury. Symptoms include headache, aversion to cold, body heat, restlessness and oppression, pain in the four limbs, stiffness and tension in the back and neck, and dry lips.
Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 4 liang) Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang, honey-fried) Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 8 liang)
Crush into coarse powder. Take 3 qian per dose, decoct with one sheng of water and five slices of Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger). Take warm at any time. If there is qi deficiency and cold constitution, add Renshen (Ginseng Radix) 2 liang.
Generally, if a woman sleeps during the day and cannot rise, feels tired of grooming, suffers from dry heaving, food selectivity, aversion to the smell of rice and food, prefers salty and sour tastes, and has stopped menstruation with weak blood, she is suitable to take this prescription. Combined with spleen-tonifying medicines to calm the fetus and nourish warmly, it makes the maternal zang-organs' qi peaceful and yin-yang complete, avoiding miscarriage. If the mother is healthy without disease, merely needing fetal nourishment, this may not be appropriate. This formula also effectively treats restless fetus, abdominal pain with bleeding, or fetus pressing upward. For threatened abortion with bleeding, harsh and hot drugs must not be used.
Dang Shen (Codonopsis Radix, remove rhizome base) Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, remove rhizome base) Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) Da Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome) Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, wine-washed, sliced, stir-fried) Chuan Xu Duan (Dipsaci Radix, remove rhizome base)
Crush into coarse powder. Take 4 qian per dose, decoct with one and a half sheng of water, three slices of Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger), and one piece each of gold and silver vessels. If bleeding does not stop, add a handful of Shu Ai Ye (Mugwort Leaf, processed). As for the fetus...
