Erchen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction)
Treats malaria caused by food injury with excessive phlegm.
Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum [processed]. Each 5 liang), Baifuling (Poria [3 liang], Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma [roasted, 1 liang])
The above are cut into pieces to form a powder. Take 3 qian per dose, add 5 slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and 1 Wumei (Mume Fructus), decoct and take orally. For those with predominant cold symptoms, add Caoguo (Tsao-ko Fructus). For those with predominant heat symptoms, add Qianhu (Peucedani Radix) and Qingpi (Aurantii Fructus Pericarpium Viride), Binglang (Arecae Semen).
Xiao Qingpi Tang (Minor Clearing Spleen Decoction)
Treats Stomach Malaria (Wei Nue), which occurs at fixed times. Initially, the patient feels the urge to stretch and yawn, followed by chills. The body trembles, the jaw quivers, and both interior and exterior feel cold; the waist and back both ache. If there is heat in both interior and exterior, the headache is severe as if splitting, accompanied by thirst for cold drinks. Or phlegm accumulates in the chest, causing irritability, fullness, and a desire to vomit. Or fever precedes chills, or chills precede fever, but with less heat and more cold. Or cold and heat are equal, or only heat without cold, or only cold without heat.
Whether it occurs every other day, daily, or every three to five days, this formula treats all such cases.
Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex [processed as before, 4 liang]), Wumei (Mume Fructus [pitted]), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma [washed with water to remove slipperiness]), Qingpi (Aurantii Fructus Pericarpium Viride), Liangjiang (Alpiniae Katsumadai Rhizoma [each 2 liang]), Caoguo (Tsao-ko Fructus [peeled, 1 liang])
The above are cut into pieces to form a powder. Take 4 qian per dose, add 2 zhan of water, 3 slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), and 1 Dazao (Jujubae Fructus), decoct until reduced to 70%, strain and discard the dregs. Take three doses before the onset of the attack. Avoid raw, cold, and greasy foods.
Hong Wanzi (Red Pill)
Treats Food Malaria (Shi Nue) and food stagnation, causing abdominal distension due to Qi stagnation.
Jingsanleng (Bletillae Rhizoma [soaked in water until soft, sliced]), Peng'ezhu (Curcumae Rhizoma [roasted]), Qingpi (Aurantii Fructus Pericarpium Viride [scraped of white pith]), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium [scraped of white pith]. Each 5 liang), Hujiao (Piperis Longi Fructus), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma [processed])
The above are ground into powder. Use rice vinegar and rice flour paste to make pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds (Wutongzi), coated with Fanhong (Alumen Rubrum). Take 50 pills per dose, washed down with Danjiangtang (Light Ginger Decoction) or Erchen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction).
Sishou Yin (Four Beasts Drink)
Treats deficiency of Qi in the Five Zang organs, irregular emotions (joy and anger), and a mix of overwork and rest. This leads to Yin and Yang overcoming each other, condensing into Phlegm-Fluids (Tan Yin), which clash with Wei Qi (Defensive Qi), triggering Malaria.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma [rhizome removed]), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma [rhizome removed]), Baifuling (Poria [peeled]), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Caoguo (Tsao-ko Fructus [peeled]), Wumei (Mume Fructus [pitted])
The above are divided equally, cut into pieces to form a powder. Take half a liang per use, marinate briefly with a small amount of salt, wrap in thick paper, moisten with water, and roast slowly over low fire until fragrant and cooked. Remove, add 2 zhan of water, and decoct. Take before the onset of the attack.
