A woman surnamed Wang, after a minor abortion, experienced palpitations and insomnia. She had fever and aversion to cold, dizziness, and profuse sweating. Her mouth was dry with little tongue coating, and the tip of her tongue was ulcerated. The pulse was deficient and rapid. This is a manifestation of deficiency of both Qi and Blood due to excessive blood loss during labor. Yang deficiency leads to aversion to cold, Yin deficiency leads to fever; when both Yin and Yang are deficient, there is both aversion to cold and fever. Upon inquiry, it was confirmed that she had bleeding for three days before the fetus was expelled. The expulsion process was extremely arduous, involving several fainting spells, and her constitution was already frail. Therefore, a prescription to tonify Qi and Blood, calm the Spirit, and consolidate sweat was used. After one dose, she slept peacefully, sweating ceased, and the chills and fever subsided. She could get up, walk, and eat half a bowl of congee. After two doses, she fully recovered. The formula consisted of Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Mu Li (Oyster Shell), Zao Ren (Sour Jujube Seed), Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood) each at 3 qian; Gan Di Huang (Rehmannia Root) at 4 qian; Huang Qi (Astragalus Root) at 2 qian; and Hong Zao (Jujube) 3 pieces, decocted in water.
In the fourth month of the Gui Chou year, a woman surnamed Hong from Xiaomadou, over twenty years old, suffered from hematemesis/hematochezia (blood loss disease). She passed blood clots in urine and blood in stool. Her genital area felt sore and bearing down, even extending to the heart. She frequently felt the urge to urinate and was mentally exhausted. Several doses of herbs such as Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) prescribed by another doctor were ineffective, leading to abdominal distension and reduced appetite. Her pulse was deficient, small, and powerless. This is a disease of Blood deficiency and cerebral weakness (degeneration of nervous system function), likely caused by excessive sexual activity. The prescribed formula included Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), Sheng Di Huang (Raw Rehmannia Root), Gou Qi Zi (Goji Berry), Lu Jiao Jiao (Deer Antler Glue), E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) each at 3 qian; Chao Zao Ren (Stir-fried Sour Jujube Seed) at 5 qian; Bai Zi Ren (Biota Seed) at 4 qian; Zhu Ban Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood coated with Cinnabar) at 5 qian; Xiang Yuan Pi (Citron Peel) at 1.5 qian; and Bai Shao (White Peony Root) at 2 qian, decocted and taken orally. After two consecutive doses, upon re-examination the next day, the illness had greatly receded. She was advised to take a few more doses and fully recovered.
A woman surnamed Wang, wife of a postal courier, suddenly began laughing uncontrollably after childbirth, with laughter audible outside the house. Even covering her mouth could not stop the laughter. Her complexion was yellowish and dull, pulses were fine and small, with spontaneous sweating and shortness of breath. This was due to excessive blood loss during delivery, causing the brain to lack blood nourishment, leading to abnormal brain function. It was likely triggered by excessive resentment and depression in daily life. The treatment should focus on tonifying Qi and Blood and nourishing the brain marrow; all symptomatic treatments should be avoided. The proposed formula included Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), Zao Ren (Sour Jujube Seed), Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood), Bai Zi Ren (Biota Seed) each at 4 qian; Bai Shao (White Peony Root) at 3 qian; Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Fruit) at 1 qian; Dang Shen (Codonopsis Root) at 3 qian; Huang Qi (Astragalus Root) at 2 qian; and Ji Zi Huang (Egg Yolk) 1 piece, mixed raw and taken orally. After taking the medicine, she slept peacefully. However, the laughter resumed the next afternoon because the blood deficiency persisted, and one dose was insufficient to replenish it. The same formula was continued. After two doses, the laughter stopped, and she stabilized through dietary supplementation.
An Shi, mother of San Zhi De Qian, suddenly developed fever and aversion to cold, numbness in hands, chest tightness, body heaviness, white greasy tongue coating, and a deep slow pulse on June 10th this year. This was likely due to excessive consumption of watermelon while cooling off, causing cold stagnation to injure the Stomach, compounded by wind-cold invasion. Initially, Huo Xiang Zheng Qi San (Agaricus Formulation for Regulating the Middle) was decocted and taken, but with little effect. Numbness in hands and feet, chest tightness, and pain persisted. Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig), Ding Xiang (Clove), and Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root) were added to the original formula at 1.5 qian each. She slept well overnight. The following afternoon, hand numbness returned, along with chest tightness, pain, belching, and nausea. Tongue coating remained white and greasy, mouth was not thirsty, pulse was deep, small, and slow, hands were slightly cool, and no fever. This indicated that cold-dampness and phlegm-fluid obstructed the Middle Jiao, suppressing Stomach Yang and impairing normal transformation. Hand numbness occurs because the Middle Jiao is diseased, affecting the four extremities, as the Spleen and Stomach govern the limbs. The condition was serious, and the previous medication was considered too mild. A new formula was prepared: Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig) 2 qian, Hou Po (Magnolia Bark) 1 qian, Cang Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) 2 qian, Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit) 6 fen, Mu Ding Xiang (Mother Clove) and Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber) each 1.5 qian, Mu Xiang (Costus Root) 1 qian, Fu Ling (Poria) 3 qian, Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root) 2 qian, plus fresh ginger, decocted and taken. After the first decoction, she immediately vomited clear fluid and saliva, about a bowl's worth, with wandering pain in chest and abdomen, continuing up and down, and hand numbness persisted. The second decoction was then given. After taking it, she sweated and passed flatus, and the pain stopped. She could sleep peacefully, and all symptoms resolved, except for loss of appetite. Then, Gui Zhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) combined with Ping Wei San (Powder for Maintaining Uprightness) was used, with reduced dosage. After two consecutive doses, she recovered.
A woman surnamed Ma, aged twenty, contracted summerheat disease in July this year. Initially treated by a pediatrician using Qing Hao (Sweet Wormwood Herb), Liu Yi San (Six-to-One Powder), Gua Lou (Trichosanthes Fruit), and Bei Mu (Fritillaria Bulb) for three doses, followed by Da Huang (Rhubarb Root) for two doses. Although bowel movements occurred, the illness did not subside. The pediatrician still advocated for Da Huang, but the family refused and sought my consultation. The patient had afternoon fever, chest tightness and discomfort, dry mouth, hot urination, and heat in the chest and diaphragm was more severe than elsewhere. Tongue coating was thin yellow with cracks, pulse was slippery and rapid. This indicated summerheat-dampness lurking in the Lung and Stomach, located in the Upper Jiao. Purging only clears the intestines and stomach, having no effect on the Lung. Treatment should employ light, clear methods to open and transform the Upper Jiao, and the illness will resolve spontaneously. The proposed formula included Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), Sha Shen (Glehnia Root), Bei Mu (Fritillaria Bulb), Gua Lou Pi (Trichosanthes Peel) each at 2 qian; Jie Geng (Platycodon Root) 1 qian; Shi Chang Pu (Acorus Rhizome) 6 fen; Pei Lan (Eupatorium Herb) 1.5 qian; Lian Qiao (Forsythia Fruit) 3 qian; Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root) and Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber) each 2 qian; Xian Shi Hu (Fresh Dendrobium Stem) 3 qian; and Pi Ye (Loquat Leaf) 1 piece, decocted and taken. On the next day's re-examination, she reported sleeping well at night, fever subsided, and chest tightness resolved. She only felt hungry and wanted to eat. The formula was modified by removing Shi Chang Pu (Acorus Rhizome), Gua Lou (Trichosanthes Fruit), Bei Mu (Fritillaria Bulb), Jie Geng (Platycodon Root), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), and Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), adding Si Gua Luo (Luffa Fiber), Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthes Root), and Gan Cao (Licorice Root). After two doses, she stabilized. For diseases in the Upper Jiao, heavy medications must never be used, as Ye Tian Shi explained in detail. This aligns with the principle in Su Wen: "Where the pathogen is high, use emetics." This does not refer solely to emetic therapy.
The son of Mr. Pan Xin, aged twenty-five, had been manic since August last year, speaking deliriously, cursing, throwing cups and utensils. Medical treatment, herbal medicines, and prayers to gods and ghosts failed, and the condition worsened daily. His family isolated him in a remote room. I was consulted in February this year. He cursed and spoke deliriously all day without rest or sleep. His complexion was normal, tongue tip red with greasy coating, bowel movement delayed for three days, diet normal, pulse deep and slippery. This is Stomach Heat with Phlegm, treatable. Stomach Heat causes climbing heights and singing, discarding clothes and running; his cursing and delirious speech are similar. Greasy tongue coating, ability to eat, lack of fatigue despite months of illness, and constipation all indicate excess patterns, not deficiency. Xiao Xian Xiong Tang (Minor Chest-Trapping Decoction) combined with Di Tan Tang (Phlegm-Expelling Decoction) was used, removing Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) and Nan Xing (Arisaema Tuber), adding Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood), and Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena Rhizome). Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome) was used at 8 fen; Gua Lou Ren (Trichosanthes Seed), Zhu Ru (Bamboo Shavings), Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), and Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood) each at 3 qian; others at 1-2 qian. After two consecutive doses, bowels moved freely, he slept at night, though nocturnal emission occurred, and tongue coating remained greasy. Zhi Ke (Bitter Orange Fruit), Zhu Ru (Bamboo Shavings), and Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena Rhizome) were removed from the original formula, Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome) dosage was reduced, and Ning Zhi Gao (Spirit-Calming Paste) was combined, still decocted. After two more doses, all ailments resolved. He only felt tired and sleepy, so dietary regulation was employed, and he recovered without further medication.
The son of Wang Shanyu from Hongqi Kou in the city, aged nineteen, returned sick from Changzhou. He had headache, body heaviness, joint soreness, fever, delirium, cough with blood-streaked sputum, dark complexion, and slippery rapid pulse. This was damp-warmth complicated by lung disease. Xiao Xian Xiong Tang (Minor Chest-Trapping Decoction) was used with Qing Hao (Sweet Wormwood Herb), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), Bei Mu (Fritillaria Bulb), Yi Yi Ren (Coix Seed), Lian Qiao (Forsythia Fruit), Hua Shi (Talcum), Sheng Di Huang (Raw Rehmannia Root), Mao Gen (Imperata Rhizome), and Pi Ye (Loquat Leaf). After one dose, sweat appeared on the head and face, cough decreased slightly. After two doses, fever subsided, spirit cleared, and he slept at night. The original formula was continued with reduced dosage for two more days, resulting in one bowel movement. He could eat about a bowl of congee per meal. Then, Bei Sha Shen (Glehnia Root), Bian Dou (Lablab Bean), Yi Yi Ren (Coix Seed), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Bai Shao (White Peony Root), Hei Dou (Black Soybean), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), and Fu Ling (Poria) were used to nourish the Stomach, and he recovered. Shortly after, due to dietary indiscretion, he developed chest tightness, anorexia, and significantly reduced intake. Er Chen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction) with Sha Shen (Glehnia Root), Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Pei Lan (Eupatorium Herb), Jie Geng (Platycodon Root), and Yi Yi Ren (Coix Seed) was given for two doses, restoring appetite. However, he became increasingly emaciated. Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six-Gentlemen Decoction) with Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Gou Qi Zi (Goji Berry), Yi Yi Ren (Coix Seed), and Hong Zao (Jujube) was used for tonification. He was advised to avoid fried, roasted, and greasy foods, consuming only rice congee and vegetables for half a month, leading to full recovery.
A girl surnamed Zhang, aged fourteen, initially felt body fatigue and tastelessness in food. Two days later, in the evening, she first had aversion to cold, followed by fever, delirium, inability to recognize people, dancing movements, continuous giggling, thirst, and irritability. Her family was alarmed, suspecting sha syndrome or evil spirits. Late at night, they summoned me. Her pulse was slippery, rapid, and irregular; tongue tip red, middle coating white and greasy; body hot with sweat. This was summerheat-dampness and phlegm-stagnation accumulating in the Middle Jiao. Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) combined with Xiao Xian Xiong Tang (Minor Chest-Trapping Decoction) was used, removing Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), and adding Gun Tan Wan (Rolling Phlegm Pill) 3 qian to decoct. After taking it, she had three bowel movements, spirit cleared, fever subsided, and she slept peacefully. She still did not feel hungry, so Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) with Zhi Ke (Bitter Orange Fruit), Jie Geng (Platycodon Root), Pei Lan (Eupatorium Herb), and Yi Yuan San (Benefit Element Powder) was given. After two doses, she recovered.
Mr. Pan from Dexing Clothing Store, aged about thirty, had fever, aversion to cold, headache, body pain, chest tightness, and anorexia. His arm was hot to the touch, indicating a severe condition, not a common cold. However, obvious heat signs were not yet present, so Cong Chi Tang (Scallion and Fermented Soybean Decoction) combined with Er Chen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction) was used with Lian Qiao (Forsythia Fruit), Zhi Ke (Bitter Orange Fruit), and Jie Geng (Platycodon Root) for observation. After taking it, aversion to cold subsided, but he became irritable, unable to sleep, with chest tightness and nausea. Pulse was slippery, tongue dry, no bowel movement for several days. After much hesitation, Da Chai Hu Tang (Major Bupleurum Decoction) was decisively used, with Da Huang (Rhubarb Root) at 3 qian. He passed loose watery stools five or six times, and previous symptoms completely disappeared, except for anorexia. Two days later, fever and delirium returned, with irritability, yellow tongue coating, slippery pulse, red lips, oral ulcers, and loose stools. Xiao Xian Xiong Tang (Minor Chest-Trapping Decoction) with Da Huang (Rhubarb Root) 3 qian was used again. On the next day's re-examination, macules and rashes appeared on the chest, back, and arms, red in color. Irritability settled, spirit cleared, cough with abundant sputum, tongue coating yellow and dry, loose stools, pulse no longer rapid. Xiao Xian Xiong Tang (Minor Chest-Trapping Decoction) was modified by removing Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber), adding Bei Mu (Fritillaria Bulb) and Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena Rhizome) for a milder treatment. After two consecutive doses, red spots increased, covering hands, feet, chest, and back, especially dense on the back. Color was bright red, speech alternated between clear and confused, eyes red, lips red, accompanied by hiccups. The original formula was continued for one more dose. Unexpectedly, on the next day's re-examination, he was comatose, unable to recognize people, with delirium, hiccups, black dry tongue coating, slippery rapid pulse, head sweating, and occasional hand and lip twitching. This indicated heavy latent heat, with the disease in a fierce stage. Cooling and purging methods should be combined to suppress the fierceness. Fortunately, the family trusted firmly, allowing bold medication. Bai Hu Tang (White Tiger Decoction), Xiao Cheng Qi Tang (Minor Order the Qi Decoction), and Xiao Xian Xiong Tang (Minor Chest-Trapping Decoction) were combined, removing Hou Po (Magnolia Bark), adding Pear Juice. After taking this, spirit cleared, hiccups and delirium gradually stabilized. Da Huang (Rhubarb Root) and Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) were removed from the previous formula, and it was continued for three doses, greatly reducing the illness. A cooling and harmonizing formula was used for half a month for recovery. Generally, severe warm diseases often resolve through macules and rashes, relying heavily on Da Huang (Rhubarb Root). When fu qi (bowel energy) is unblocked, latent pathogens can emerge externally.
Mr. Mi, over forty years old, had been bedridden for many days. After several doses of medicine, other illnesses subsided, but he suffered from insomnia all night, delirium, continuous laughter, anorexia. His tongue tip was red with little coating, pulse small and slippery. This indicated that after the illness subsided, body fluids were severely damaged, and phlegm-heat obstruction caused the problem. Bai He (Lily Bulb), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Sha Shen (Glehnia Root), Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Bei Mu (Fritillaria Bulb), Hua Fen (Trichosanthes Root), Zao Ren (Sour Jujube Seed), Bai Zi Ren (Biota Seed), Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood), Zhu Ru (Bamboo Shavings), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root) were used, with a slight addition of Chuan Lian (Coptis Rhizome) 2 fen. After one dose, laughter stopped, and spirit calmed. He recovered through dietary regulation.
Mr. Zhou, about forty years old, initially contracted damp-warmth disease. His relative used San Ren Zhi Jie Tang (Three-Seed and Magnolia Decoction), Xiao Xian Xiong Tang (Minor Chest-Trapping Decoction), and Gua Lou Xie Bai Tang (Trichosanthes and Macrostemon Decoction) for over ten doses, followed by Xie Ye (Cassia Leaf) purgation. Spirit became greatly fatigued, palpitations, and insomnia. His complexion was dull, tongue dry without moisture, fingers trembled, right pulse small and weak, left pulse deficient and rapid. This indicated excessive draining, damaging both body fluids and Yuan Qi (Original Qi). Zeng Ye Tang (Fluid-Increasing Decoction) with Xi Yang Shen (American Ginseng Root), Mu Li (Oyster Shell), Shi Hu (Dendrobium Stem), Bai Zi Ren (Biota Seed), and Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood) was used. On the next day's re-examination, sweating was incessant, tongue dry and turning black with slight thin coating, mouth dry. The patient complained of extreme head heaviness. This indicated severe Yuan Qi deficiency, and the previous medicine was too mild. Shi Hu (Dendrobium Stem) and Mu Li (Oyster Shell) were removed from the previous formula, adding Dang Shen (Codonopsis Root) and Huang Qi (Astragalus Root) each 3 qian, Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Fruit) 5 fen, Bai Shao (White Peony Root) 3 qian. Just after dawn the next day, he was summoned again. Sweating increased, worse during sleep, hands cold, spirit fatigued, both pulses deficient and fine, Heart and Kidney pulses particularly insufficient, indicating impending collapse. Bie Zhi Shen (Korean Ginseng Root) 3 qian, Huang Qi (Astragalus Root) 5 qian, Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) 4 qian, Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) 5 qian, Zao Ren (Sour Jujube Seed) 5 qian, Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Fruit) and Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root) each 1 qian, Fu Mai (Floating Wheat) 5 qian, Hong Zao (Jujube) 5 pieces were decocted urgently and taken. External sweat-stopping powder was applied to the whole body. On the afternoon re-examination, sweating stopped, he slept peacefully, and hands and feet turned warm. The same formula was continued for another dose. From then on, he could drink congee. Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six-Gentlemen Decoction) and Zi Sheng Wan (Life-Nourishing Pills) were used for half a month of regulation until recovery.
Madam Feng, mother of Mr. Feng Maoxuan, nearly sixty years old, developed a carbuncle on the back in June this year. Treated by Western doctor Xu for nearly a month, the ulcer did not heal. She had profuse sweating, dizziness, loose stools, and mental fatigue. The Western doctor noted internal symptoms and advised consulting an internal medicine physician. Both pulses were deficient and soft, chest tightness with nausea, cough, palpitations, dizziness, profuse sweating, little tongue coating. This indicated that in advanced age, Qi and Blood were already depleted. With extensive pus and blood loss from the external lesion and prolonged fasting, Qi and Blood were severely deficient, and Yin and Yang were about to collapse. The danger was extreme. Da Bu Wan Jian (Great Tonification Pill Decoction) and Sheng Mai San (Generate the Pulse Powder) were used as a base. Lu Dang Shen (Codonopsis Root), Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Gou Qi Zi (Goji Berry) each 2 qian; Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Fruit) 3 fen; Zao Ren (Sour Jujube Seed), Shan Yao (Dioscorea Rhizome), Chao Shu Di Tan (Charred Prepared Rehmannia Root) each 3 qian; Huang Qi (Astragalus Root), Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel), Fo Shou (Finger Citron) each 1 qian. After two consecutive doses, sweating decreased slightly, and appetite improved slightly. However, cough and palpitations persisted. Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel), Fo Shou (Finger Citron), Huang Qi (Astragalus Root), and Dang Shen (Codonopsis Root) were removed from the original formula, adding Bai He (Lily Bulb), Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood), Bai Zi Ren (Biota Seed), Xi Yang Shen (American Ginseng Root), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), and Bei Mu (Fritillaria Bulb). After three more doses, spirit showed improvement. However, heart-deficiency coughing, dry tongue without moisture, heat in the left palm, and sensation of hot air from nostrils indicated chronic Yin fluid deficiency in advanced age, with Liver and Lung fluids exhausted, generating dryness internally. Moistening and nourishing were necessary. A new formula was prescribed: Bei Sha Shen (Glehnia Root) and Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber) each 1.5 qian; Yan Wo (Swallow's Nest), Bai He (Lily Bulb), Di Gu Pi (Cortex Lycii), Zao Ren (Sour Jujube Seed), Bai Zi Ren (Biota Seed) each 2 qian; Mu Li (Oyster Shell) 3 qian. She was instructed to simmer Swallow's Nest soup separately, taken twice daily, interspersed with hen soup. Considering the close relationship between external and internal conditions, bandages were removed for inspection. Mr. Feng stated that since taking the decoction, muscle growth had improved daily, unlike the previous stagnation. However, the ulcerated area remained 3 cun long and 2 cun wide, skin could be lifted, with no pus or debris. The Western doctor used only Iodoform. I stated that the external lesion required immediate application of flesh-generating medicine. Iodoform only sterilizes and prevents decay but lacks flesh-generating power. As long as the external lesion does not heal, the internal condition will be affected. Although external and internal differ, they relate to the same Zang-Fu organs and Qi-Blood. Mr. Feng agreed. He negotiated with Dr. Xu to change the dressing. After several doses of the decoction, coughing, dryness, and heat symptoms subsided. The original formula was continued for half a month, and Swallow's Nest soup was regularly consumed. Spirit and diet improved, and the external lesion gradually healed. This case initially benefited from Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Huang Qi (Astragalus Root), and Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), and later from Swallow's Nest and other moistening-clearing herbs. It is regrettable that modern Western doctors only adhere to established methods and do not study Chinese medical texts.
Mr. Wang from Longshengxiang Paper Shop, aged twenty-five, suffered from hematochezia starting in April this year. Initially, stool contained only traces of blood. After lingering for over three months, he sought treatment. He passed blood more than twenty times daily, varying in color from bright red to purple or pale. He had dizziness, palpitations, mental fatigue, yellowish dull complexion, and string-taut slow powerless pulse. This was due to excessive mental labor. As the Classic states: "Injury to Yin collaterals leads to internal bleeding." Prolonged illness and excessive blood loss resulted in severe Qi and Blood deficiency. Hemostasis was urgent, otherwise sudden collapse and death would occur. A formula to tonify Qi and Blood, stop bleeding, and consolidate blood was used. After one dose, bleeding decreased significantly. After two doses, it reduced to five or six times daily. After five consecutive doses, he fully recovered. The formula included Lu Dang Shen (Codonopsis Root), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root) each 2 qian; Chao Shu Di Tan (Charred Prepared Rehmannia Root), Bai Shao (White Peony Root), Chi Shi Zhi (Halloysitum Rubrum), Zao Ren (Sour Jujube Seed), Xu Duan (Dipsacus Root) each 3 qian; Sheng Ma (Cimicifuga Rhizome) 5 fen, decocted and taken.
Mrs. Ye, over twenty years old, suffered from prolonged menstrual bleeding due to excessive mental labor. She had dizziness, palpitations, and sore throat. Pulse was deficient and small, tongue red without coating. This was excessive mental labor causing Yin deficiency and Blood Heat forcing blood to move recklessly. Heat rising caused sore throat. Dizziness and palpitations were due to Blood deficiency failing to nourish the Heart and cerebral weakness. First, nourish Blood and regulate menstruation to stop bleeding. The formula included Gan Di Huang (Rehmannia Root) 4 qian; Xuan Shen (Scrophularia Root), E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), Zao Ren (Sour Jujube Seed), Mu Li (Oyster Shell), Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Bai Shao (White Peony Root) each 3 qian; Chao Shu Di Tan (Charred Prepared Rehmannia Root) 2 qian; Xiang Yuan Pi (Citron Peel) 1.5 qian. After two consecutive doses, menstruation stopped, but sore throat, dizziness, and poor appetite persisted. Tongue red without coating, left pulse smaller. Bie Jia (Tartar Turtle Shell) 3 qian, Zhen Zhu Mu (Pearl Mother-of-Pearl), Sang Ye (Mulberry Leaf) 3 fen, Gou Qi Zi (Goji Berry), Nu Zhen Zi (Ligustrum Fruit) each 2 qian were added to the previous formula. After four consecutive doses, she fully recovered.
Mrs. Li, over forty years old, had a history of metrorrhagia triggered by fatigue, worry, or anger. My method of nourishing Yin and stopping bleeding was usually effective. In January of the Ren Zi year, the illness became severe, with bleeding filling a bucket, palpitations, dizziness, near-collapse, weak pulses, and pallor. Excessive blood loss led to impending collapse. Following the method of Wei Liuzhou treating Song Shenfu's wife, Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) 8 qian, Gou Qi Zi (Goji Berry) 5 qian, E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) 4 qian, Zao Ren (Sour Jujube Seed) 4 qian, Lu Dang Shen (Codonopsis Root) 3 qian were decocted as one dose and taken throughout the day. Palpitations slightly stabilized, and bleeding slowed. After three consecutive doses, bleeding stopped. Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber) and Bai Zi Ren (Biota Seed) were added to make a paste for regular consumption, leading to recovery.
Mrs. Ni, over thirty years old, had postpartum bleeding that did not stop, with dizziness, palpitations, profuse sweating, cold hands, and fine weak pulse. Another doctor present suggested using Tong Bian (Child Urine) to prevent blood syncope. I stated this was a critical condition of dual collapse of Yin and Yang. Tong Bian is too weak and might delay treatment. Dang Shen (Codonopsis Root), Huang Qi (Astragalus Root), Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), Zao Ren (Sour Jujube Seed) each 4 qian were used. The other doctor agreed. After taking my formula, bleeding stopped and sweating ceased immediately, and she could eat a bowl of congee. The original formula was continued with reduced dosage for two days, ensuring stability.
Jiang Yuchuan came to Zhenjiang from Fujian and then went to Hunan. He contracted wind-cold along the way, causing left shoulder pain and immobility, cold intolerance at the painful site, slow slippery pulse, and normal diet. Qiang Huo (Notopterygium Rhizome) and Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig) each 1.5 qian, Qin Jiao (Gentiana Macrophylla Root), Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber), Cang Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) each 2 qian, Bai Jie Zi (White Mustard Seed), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Rhizome)
