Hemp Seed (Rizinus Semen, separately ground) 15g, Immature Bitter Orange (Zhi Ke, pulp removed, bran-fried) 15g, Ginseng Root (Ren Shen) 15g, Rhubarb Radix et Rhizoma (Da Huang) 15g.
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder, mix with refined honey to make pills, sized like wutong seeds. Take 50 pills per dose, swallowed with warm water or rice drink as desired. If bowel movement is not achieved, increase the number of pills.
Ju Xing Wan (Orange and Apricot Pill) [Formula see Discussion 13 below]
Discussion 13 asks: What is the cause of postpartum metrorrhagia (profuse uterine bleeding)? The answer is: Due to excessive blood loss during childbirth, Qi and Blood become suddenly deficient and have not yet recovered. This may be exacerbated by physical labor or difficult labor causing severe lower abdominal pain. In such cases, this pill should be used to stop the bleeding.
Red Halloysite (Chi Shi Zhi) 15g, Mugwort Leaf (Ai Ye) 15g, Psoralea Fruit (Bu Gu Zhi, fried) 15g, Equisetum Herb (Mu Zei) 15g, Aconite Lateral Root Preparata (Fu Zi, one piece, processed, skin and bud removed).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder, mix with aged rice drink to form pills, sized like wutong seeds. Take 50 pills before meals, delivered with warm wine; rice drink is also acceptable.
(This formula is recorded under the section on Metrorrhagia and Metrostaxis)
Discussion 14 asks: What causes postpartum abdominal distension, fullness, and vomiting? The answer is: The Stomach receives food and fluids, while the Spleen governs transportation and transformation. The Spleen generates Blood and Qi and internally moistens the Zang-Fu organs. For those with excessive postpartum blood loss, in Di Sheng Tang, remove Mentha Leaf (Ze Lan) and Red Peony Root (Chi Shao Yao), and double the dosage of Fresh Ginger (Sheng Jiang) and Tangerine Peel (Ju Pi).
Di Sheng Tang: Red Peony Root (Chi Shao Yao) 3g, Pinellia Tuber (Ban Xia, soaked in hot water) 3g, Mentha Leaf (Ze Lan Ye) 3g, Aged Tangerine Peel (Chen Ju Pi, white pith removed) 3g, Ginseng Root (Ren Shen) 3g, Licorice Root (Gan Cao, roasted) 3g.
Cut the above ingredients into small pieces. Take 12g per dose, add 450ml water, decoct until 280ml remains, strain, and take warm. Do not restrict the time of administration.
Discussion 15 asks: What causes black qi appearing around the mouth and nose accompanied by epistaxis (nosebleed) after childbirth? The answer is: The Yangming Meridian is the sea of the meridians, originating at the nose, intersecting at the forehead, and returning out... thus causing... Upon encountering this condition, urgently take two crimson threads and two strands of hair from the vertex of the parturient's head, tie them around the proximal phalanx of the middle finger, and the bleeding will stop. There is no medicinal treatment for this; it is also considered a form of apotropaic ritual.
Discussion 16 asks: What causes rapid breathing and wheezing in the throat after childbirth? The answer is: Ying (Nutritive Qi) is Blood, Wei (Defensive Qi) is Qi. Ying circulates within the vessels, while Wei circulates outside the vessels, interacting... solitary Yang... wheezing. Duo Ming Dan (Life-Saving Pill) [See Formula under Discussion 2].
Discussion 17 asks: What causes wind-stroke (Zhong Feng) after childbirth? The answer is: It is generally because childbirth injures and disturbs Qi and Blood, damaging the collaterals. The pores (Cou Li) are loose and open due to early physical exertion... leading to illness. Xu Ming Tang (Continuing Life Decoction)... or caused by... human factors.
