When a woman engages in sexual intercourse or during ovulation, she secretes viscous fluid. This mucus is like the broth from stewed chicken, representing the essence of the body's nutrients.
When the female reproductive organs are stimulated, leading to the loss of bodily nutrients, if these lost nutrients rot within the uterus (Uterus) or vagina (Vagina) and are discharged from the body, it is called leukorrhea (Dai Xia).
There is a meridian named Dai Mai (Belt Vessel) around the navel at the waist. This meridian can bind and collect the nutrients of the five zang organs to prevent loss. Therefore, the discharge of rotted nutrients due to loss is called leukorrhea.
Leukorrhea has five colors, known in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as "Five-Color Leukorrhea," namely white discharge, yellow discharge, red/bloody discharge, black discharge, and green/cyan discharge. These five types may occur individually or in combination.
Leukorrhea is caused by nutrient loss and rotting, not by inflammation or infection of the uterus. Many women today undergo anti-inflammatory treatment, but why does it fail to cure? Because it is actually not inflammation, no amount of anti-inflammatory treatment will cure it. Instead, it makes the body more deficient, worsening the condition, leading to tragedies such as many women having their uteruses removed due to uterine cancer or cervical carcinoma (see sections on Uterine Cancer and Cervical Carcinoma).
Red discharge is associated with the Heart; yellow discharge with the Spleen; white discharge with Lung Qi Deficiency; green discharge with the Liver; and black discharge with the Kidney. Different types of leukorrhea appear depending on which zang organ is diseased.
Both men and women experience nutrient loss, sometimes discharged with urine without forming leukorrhea. For example, proteinuria in diabetes mellitus causes foamy, turbid urine, or floating oil on the surface. These are all signs of nutrient loss. Therefore, treatment should not rely solely on controlling data indicators to determine recovery.
There are many causes for kidney deficiency and kidney failure, such as food irritation, drug damage, emotional shock, and excessive sexual activity, which harm the body and cause nutrient loss. The purpose of tonifying the kidney is to restore zang-fu function through supplementation. Supplementation must address the root cause and cannot be done blindly. "Deficiency unable to accept tonification" is actually due to incorrect supplementation, not an inability to supplement. Thus, we know that the Kidney and Bladder are not merely for urination.
(5) What is the significance of Tonifying Kidney and Strengthening Yang and Winter Supplementation?
The Huangdi Neijing states: The Kidney governs bones; bones produce marrow; the brain is the sea of marrow. Note: "Govern" means to command and manipulate its activities.
Chapter 8 of the Linglan Midian Lun in Suwen states: The Kidney is the official of strength and power, and skills emerge from it. That is, the Kidney is the organ that exerts physical ability; mental thinking and dexterity all originate from the Kidney.
One to two months after birth, an infant's penis naturally erects at Zi Shi (11:00 PM to 1:00 AM), even though he has no desire for sexual intercourse. Why does this happen?
Some say it is because the bladder is full of urine and needs to urinate. But why can elderly people not erect even when their bladders are full?
At Zi Shi, one yang is born. At night during Zi Shi, the body's qi descends to the lowest point at Huiyin (CV-1), corresponding to the Xu and Wei stars in the 28 mansions. Qi begins to rise again. The initial generation of qi is Yang. Yang corresponds to Qian (Heaven), hence it is said that "Heaven is born at Zi."
Therefore, the way of health preservation is to avoid sexual intercourse at Zi Shi to prevent damaging the newly generated Yang.
Zi corresponds to Shaoyang, and Shaoyang belongs to the Gallbladder. The initial generation of qi is in the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian. A person dies because the Shaoyang qi of the Gallbladder perishes, leading to the death of Kidney qi. The Gallbladder is the organ of wind. If Gallbladder qi perishes, wind qi cannot initiate movement. The Kidney is Shaoyin. If yin perishes, yang perishes, meaning the Gallbladder cannot activate Kidney qi. With no qi to generate and rise in yin and yang, death occurs. Therefore, death always starts with cold feet rising upwards, indicating the perishing of Yang in the Kidney, not because the heart stops beating.
Antihypertensive drugs causing diuresis lead to erectile dysfunction or weak urination. This means antihypertensive drugs harm the rising of Yang qi. Long-term use results in the body's Yang qi failing to rise, leading to uremia (see sections on Hypertension, Kidney Disease, and Uremia).
At Wu Shi, one yin is born. At noon during Wu Shi (11:00 AM to 1:00 PM), the body's qi rises to the highest point at Baihui (GV-20) and then begins to descend.
Because Baihui (GV-20) on the top of the head is the meeting point of all Yang meridians, only the Jueyin Liver Meridian ascends to Baihui, guiding the qi rising to the peak downwards. The initial descent of qi is Yin. Yin corresponds to Kun (Earth). The Liver corresponds to Chou (according to the text's unique logic, though traditionally Liver corresponds to Yin/Mao). Hence, it is said that "Earth is born at Chou." As shown in the figure, humans maintain life through breathing from birth. Three minutes without breathing leads to death. After birth, breathing starts with the Lungs. The Lungs correspond to Yin, hence it is said that "Man is born at Yin."
Chapter 10 of the Jingmai section in Lingshu states: The Yellow Emperor said: "When man is first formed, essence is created first. From essence, brain and marrow are generated. Bones are the framework, vessels are the camp, tendons are the rigidity, flesh is the wall, skin is strong and hair grows long. Grain enters the stomach, vessel channels become open, and blood and qi then flow." The Kidney is the root of our life. Yang is the energy of life. The growth and strength of the body rely on the Kidney as the foundation. If the Kidney is strong, the vitality of life is robust, and the body is naturally healthy. The Yang in the Kidney is our life's Yang energy, generating ability and physical strength, like the roots of a tree. Therefore, Tonifying Kidney and Strengthening Yang is medicine for health. Both men and women can Tonify Kidney and Strengthen Yang, not just in the narrow sense of supplementing the male genitalia.
At Winter Solstice, one yang is born. This is when our body's qi reaches its lowest point of the year and begins to rise. At Start of Winter, qi descends to the Shaoyang meridian. Shaoyang is the beginning of qi rising (see Figure 3). Therefore, supplementation at Start of Winter reserves sufficient energy for rising qi. When rising qi energy is strong, the body is healthy, resistance is strong, and illness is less likely. Thus, winter supplementation is the fundamental way of preventive medicine, which is to supplement Yang qi.
On April 20, 1990 (Republic of China Year 79), a 90-minute program on CTI TV introduced the four characters "Tonifying Kidney and Strengthening Yang" in TCM. It invited Renal Urology expert Jiang Wan* to explain the definition. The expert said: "Tonifying Kidney and Strengthening Yang was used by past TCM practitioners to deceive emperors. When the emperor took it and it didn't work, TCM practitioners would say it's because this one didn't work or that one didn't work. So, Tonifying Kidney and Strengthening Yang is TCM deceiving the emperor and the public." However, Tonifying Kidney and Strengthening Yang is extremely important medicine for resisting disease in the human body. Health maintenance relies on the strength of Yang in the Kidney. But why can the public not see the true meaning of these four characters?
Flipping through the history of Chinese medicine, TCM treatment focuses on what disease to treat, what herbs to use, and what formulas to prescribe. There is no distinction between "imperial prescriptions" and "folk prescriptions," nor any medical records as described by certain experts. If anyone can provide any TCM classic containing the records mentioned by this expert, I am willing to offer 10,000 yuan as a reward to acquire this knowledge.
Quack doctors distorted the true meaning of Tonifying Kidney and Strengthening Yang in TCM, deceiving three or five people. Medical experts,不懂 TCM kidney medicine, fabricated baseless lies, deceiving millions. Are they medical villains? Medical hooligans? Or "scientific quacks"? Can medical experts speak nonsense without understanding medicine?
Experts speak recklessly, media broadcasts indiscriminately. The public mistakenly believes that medical practices that disregard human life are science. Is curing people science? Is killing people also science? Is TCM unscientific? Even curing people lacks scientific basis.
In the past, "quacks" were doctors; today, "quacks" are scammers who harm three or five people. "Scientific quack" experts have killed millions. "Medical hooligans" have raped the true meaning of Tonifying Kidney and Strengthening Yang in TCM! How many "scientific quacks" and "medical hooligans" are distorting medicine and harming national health today?
We strongly doubt that today's education could produce a renal expert who cannot even cure kidney disease patients. Should this expert be called an authority on killing people regarding uremia patients? Does authoritative medicine make people suspicious and puzzled?
Shouldn't we uphold social justice for the safety of the lives and health of the general public?
(6) Cutting the Umbilical Cord
Cutting the umbilical cord is the first step for an infant to leave the mother's body and live independently. Humans, as the spirit of all things, are not entirely different from other animals.
The Duanqi Chapter in Pediatric Section of Yizong Jinjian states: When an infant is born, after cutting the umbilical cord, it should be cauterized with fire for disinfection. The length should be six cun (ancient measurement, approx. 3.5 modern cun). It should not be too short or too long. Too short harms the internal organs; too long leaves a scar. Additionally, apply a moxa cake on the navel to prevent external wind-cold evil from entering, and wrap it with soft silk and new cotton to avoid urine moisture and wind-cold evil.
Because the umbilicus is the root of the child, named Shenque (CV-8). This acupoint is near the three yin meridians, prefers warmth and dislikes cold, prefers dryness and dislikes dampness. If cutting the umbilical cord follows the above methods, water-dampness and wind-cold qi will not enter the umbilicus.
After birth, the umbilical stump falls off in about 5 to 7 days. From the cut site to the umbilicus, it retracts one cun per day. When qi retracts to the umbilicus, totaling about six cun, the umbilicus falls off.
Today, obstetrics and gynecology departments cut the umbilical cord leaving only 1.5 to 2 cm, which is half of the ancient 3.5 cun. This causes 50-60% of infants to have protruding umbilici, abdominal distension, umbilical pain, crying day and night, convulsions, or mouth twitching. TCM calls this umbilical wind or umbilical protrusion; Western medicine calls it umbilical hernia. Folk commonly call it "water belly button." You can gently press the umbilicus of children under one year old from bottom to top; you may hear gurgling sounds or see it protrude like a longan seed.
Many infants cry at night shortly after birth, commonly known as the "Hundred-Day Barrier," requiring over 100 days before stopping. Night belongs to Yin. When Yin qi is strong, abdominal pain causes crying. Crying makes the umbilicus protrude. This is caused by cutting the umbilical cord too short or improper handling.
For infants crying at night, using Chan Tui San (containing Gouteng, Chan Tui, Tong Cao, Fang Feng, Jiang Can, Jing Jie, or adding Quan Xie, Zhi Zi), Xiao Feng San, or Navel Paste formula can quickly cure the condition, stopping night crying, allowing young parents to sleep peacefully at night.
Infants delivered by old midwives versus those delivered by medically trained staff can be distinguished by looking at the umbilicus. Wind-cold-damp qi enters the three yin meridians through the umbilicus, causing many children to have stool like sheep dung pellets, constipation, and difficult defecation. This is due to cutting the umbilical cord too short, allowing wind-cold to enter the intestines from the umbilicus, causing intestinal peristalsis weakness. In severe cases, blood appears in stool, called Intestinal Wind and Blood in Stool in TCM. How many young parents are troubled by their children's constipation today? Intestines unable to peristalse means weak qi movement. The Lung and Large Intestine are exterior-interior partners. During colds, qi movement is obstructed, and external wind-cold easily causes children to convulse. All this is caused by cutting the umbilical cord too short, making it susceptible to wind. Yet, Wei Chuan AGU milk powder was falsely accused of phosphorus-calcium imbalance. This is the villain accusing the victim first. Modern medicine caused the trouble but blamed the best-selling manufacturer.
II. Why Do We Get Sick?
Getting sick is something everyone encounters in life. Therefore, recovering health and healing is an instinct everyone must possess. Thus, everyone should be their own doctor, everyone is their own medical authority. One's health must be obtained by oneself, not relied upon others.
To heal sickness, one must first understand the cause of the sickness. Eliminating the cause allows the body to heal itself and regain health.
TCM classifies the causes of sickness into three categories:
(1) External Causes:
Changes in climate, where the body fails to adapt to the Six Qi (Wind, Summer Heat, Cold, Dampness, Dryness, Fire) of the climate. Climate imbalance and irregular daily routines lead to external contraction diseases, called External Causes.
(2) Internal Causes:
Changes in psychology and emotions. The body becomes imbalanced due to the Seven Emotions and Six Desires—Joy, Anger, Worry, Pondering, Sorrow, Fear, Fright, Love, and Desire—leading to pathological changes. Diseases generated by internal injury from the Seven Emotions are called Internal Causes.
(3) Neither Internal Nor External Causes:
1. Food Injury: Diseases caused by dietary imbalance due to the Five Flavors (Sour, Bitter, Sweet, Pungent, Salty) and Five Odors (Gamey, Scorched, Fragrant, Fishy, Rotten) of food.
2. External Trauma: Knife and axe wounds, falls and blows, burns, car accidents, etc.
Any disease arises from these Internal, External, and Neither Internal Nor External Causes, collectively known as the Three Causes of Disease. Internal causes may sometimes combine with external causes, and vice versa. They may occur separately or mix together, producing symptoms of maladaptation in the body and mind, which constitutes sickness. Today, air pollution, chemical drug damage, and any disease occurrence do not exceed these three causes.
Climate differs by region, so diseases differ. Climate differs by season (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter), so diseases differ. Diet and environment differ by region, so diseases differ. Even the same disease occurring in different people requires different treatment methods and medications.
Any disease has its cause, lesion, and process of onset to recovery. Where there is a cause, there is an effect. Why are there many identical, unknown-cause diseases nationwide and globally that困扰 and harm human health?
If everyone carefully reads this book and understands disease through TCM, there are no incurable diseases in the world. Nationwide and globally, any disease cannot escape these three causes. Today's various civilization diseases—Hypertension, Diabetes, Hepatitis B, Cancer, AIDS, and any other incurable malignant diseases—are symptoms resulting from improper treatment of the three causes and damage from therapeutic drugs. Understanding TCM meridian pathology and Six-Meridian transmission, any incurable malignant disease can be resolved, restoring health. Let us unveil the true meaning of science!
III. Why Do We Catch Colds? What is a Cold?
Sunlight, air, and clean water are the three elements sustaining our life. Changes in these three elements causing physiological maladaptation are one of the main causes of sickness.
Sunlight, air, and clean water (Water, Fire, Wind) produce temperature changes, manifesting as the rising, falling, expanding, contracting, and stabilizing of qi, known as the Five Elements.
The Confucius Family Sayings, Chapter 24, Five Emperors: Confucius said: "Formerly, Qiu heard from Lao Dan: 'Heaven has Five Elements: Water, Fire, Wood, Metal, Earth. They transform and nurture in turns to create all things. Their spirits are called the Five Emperors.' The Five Elements of Heaven—Dan (Red), Ling (Green/Cyan), Cang (Blue/Green), Su (White), Yuan (Black)—become Five Qi. Through the transformation of the Ten Heavenly Stems, they descend to earth becoming Cold, Summer Heat, Dryness, Dampness, Wind. The classics say: 'Heaven has Five Qi. Entering the nose, they store in the Five Zang, flourishing on the face and chin.' That is, Heaven's Five Qi (Wind, Summer Heat, Dampness, Dryness, Cold) enter from the nose. Wind Qi enters the Liver, Summer/Fire Qi enters the Heart, Damp Qi enters the Spleen, Dry Qi enters the Lungs, Cold Qi enters the Kidneys. Stored in the ordinary person's Five Zang, accumulating essence, flourishing on the face."
Suwen: The Five Zang reflect in the Five Orifices: eyes, ears, mouth, nose, tongue. The Five Elements load each other, waxing and waning, generating all things, operating ceaselessly, hence called "Xing" (Moving/Traveling). That is, whether the mutual coordination of the Five Zang (Liver, Heart, Spleen, Lung, Kidney) regarding the rising, falling, expanding, contracting, and stabilizing of qi, and their generating and overcoming changes, is harmonious, can be diagnosed through the eyes, ears, mouth, nose, and tongue.
Chunqiu Fanlu says: "Qi of Heaven and Earth are arranged into Five Elements. The Five Elements are indeed 'Xing' (Moving)."
Suwen, Tian Yuan Ji Da Lun, Chapter 66: "Heaven has Five Elements, governing five positions, generating Cold, Summer Heat, Dampness, Dryness, Wind. Man has Five Zang transforming Five Qi, generating Joy, Anger, Worry, Pondering, Fear." From birth, humans breathe through the nose, and skin pores also breathe. The classics say: "Lung qi connects to the nose," and "Lung governs skin and hair." That is, lung respiration through nostrils and skin is the same.
The role of nostrils and skin in breathing air is the Five Zang operating Five Qi. That is, the roles of rising (Fire), falling (Water), contracting (Metal), expanding (Wood), and stabilizing (Earth) of human qi are produced by the regulation of Wind Qi entering the Liver, Dry Qi entering the Lungs, Damp Qi entering the Spleen, Cold Qi entering the Kidneys, and Summer/Fire Qi entering the Heart.
Inside the mother, the infant uses the umbilical cord to obtain nutrients and air from the mother. Respiration through the navel is called fetal breathing. The navel is the root of the fetus's life, hence Daoism calls it Tai Yuan (Fetal Origin), regulating Five Qi. This is prenatal respiration. At this time, lung alveoli are folded like parachutes, and lung respiration is still glandular and electrical.
After leaving the mother's body, cutting the umbilical cord allows air to enter through the nose. Lung alveoli expand like parachutes filled with air for respiration. This is postnatal respiration.
Postnatal respiration is the beginning of the Five Zang operating qi. The contracting action of Metal Qi allows the Lungs to bring air into the body. Using the expansion and contraction pressure of the Heart's beating (Heart and Kidney both belong to Shaoyin Meridian), air is delivered to the Dantian (navel). This connects postnatal respiration to the prenatal respiration of fetal breathing, facilitating air exchange among internal organs, external skin, and meridians, strengthening the postnatal respiratory function of the lungs. Fact: Breathing air does not just reach the lungs, but reaches the Dantian.
Everyone can observe carefully: For twelve hours in the morning, air enters the left nostril, circles the navel, and exits the right nostril. For twelve hours in the afternoon, air enters the right nostril, circles the navel, and exits the left nostril. Daoism calls this breathing "Regulating the Green Dragon, Subduing the White Tiger." When sitting quietly in meditation, we can see the qi current breathing on the left is blue-green—the Green Dragon (Liver Wood). The qi on the right is white—the White Tiger (Lung Metal). Their functions differ.
The infant's postnatal respiration connects to prenatal respiration only after the fontanelle on the top of the infant's head completely heals. The thymus is the exchange device for pre- and postnatal respiration. Only after the thymus completely disappears is the task of connecting pre- and postnatal respiration achieved. Therefore, the infant must wait for the fontanelle to heal before the navel stops the function of fetal breathing. Thus, cutting the umbilical cord has a huge impact on the infant's lifelong health (see section on Cutting the Umbilical Cord).
