The Lung Qi connects with the pharynx. The Stomach Qi connects with the larynx. Generally speaking, the pharynx is used for expelling air, and the larynx is used for receiving food. This is a critical passageway of the entire body. If it becomes blocked and unpatent, then the pathways are obstructed, making it difficult to swallow food and drink. Life and death, safety and danger, all depend on this. This is the most urgent condition for humans. If not treated early, it cannot be saved. Among symptoms of throat pain, only Hou Feng (Wind Throat) is still more acute, followed by Ru E (Tonsillar Hypertrophy). If both left and right sides have Ru E, this is also Chan Feng (Entangling Wind). What is called Chan Feng refers to the throat being tightly entangled and constricted, with only a thread-like passage remaining. What is called Ru E refers to the swollen area resembling a silkworm moth, with a shape that still leaves some room for passage. Investigating the cause of disease, all result from contracting Wind-Heat pathogens in daily life, accumulating over time, lodging in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner), not manifesting immediately, but acting when opportunities arise. After drunkenness followed by heavy drinking, or after fatigue followed by continued labor, the Ministerial Fire (Xiang Huo, the functional fire residing in the Liver and Kidneys) is stirred. Once the Ministerial Fire blazes, the Wind-Heat accumulated daily rises all at once. Phlegm and blood surge upward like a tide, knotting at the throat, unable to be vomited out externally, nor able to descend internally, causing swelling and pain, bitter groaning, inability to eat when hungry, inability to drink when thirsty. Decoctions struggle to achieve results quickly, how can pills and powders exert efficacy? The disease momentum has already pressed close; one can only stand and watch them die. One must use knives and needles to pierce and drain, so as to vent the toxin and save from heat. Only then can treatment with medicine lead to recovery.
The pulse of Hou Bi (Sore Throat): Both Cun positions (wrist pulse positions corresponding to the upper body) are surging and overflowing, presenting as Excess above and Deficiency below. The pulse should avoid being fine and hidden (Wei Fu).
Qu Huo Tong Guan Yin (Fire-Expelling Pass-Opening Decoction) treats Hou Bi obstruction where food and drink cannot pass down.
Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Scrophulariae Radix (Xuanshen), Sophorae Tonkinensis Radix (Shandougen), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), Arytenoid Seed (Niubangzi), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhishi) (each 2 qian), Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang), Natrii Sulfas Crystallisatus (Xuanmingfen), Trichosanthis Semen (Gualouren) (each 3 qian), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Ginger, 2 slices). Decoct in water and take warm.
Li Xiao San (Immediate Dissipation Powder)
Borax (Baipengsha), Ash of Junci Medulla (Dengxin Hui - made by packing Junci Medulla into a jar, sealing it, heating until red), Natrii Sulfas Efflorescens (Fenghua Xiao), Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai), Indigo Naturalis (Qingdai), Borneolum Syntheticum (Bingpian) (equal parts).
Grind the above into an extremely fine powder. Use a reed tube to blow the powder into the throat.
Emetic Method
Channa Argus Gall (Qingyu Dan, one piece), Chalcanthite (Danfan, 2 qian), Bovis Calculus (Niuhuang), Borneolum Syntheticum (Bingpian) (each 5 fen).
Place the latter three substances into the fish gallbladder, tie the mouth with thread, hang in a ventilated place, dry in shade, and grind into powder. Dip a chicken feather in the medicine and touch the throat; immediately large amounts of phlegm and blood will be vomited up, leading to immediate recovery.
Another Prescription
Alumen (Baifan, half jin), stir-fried together with fifteen seeds of Croton Tiglium (Badou Rou), then remove the Badou.
Use a goose feather dipped in aged vinegar, Baifan, Ginger Juice, and Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina (Zaojiao Mo) to induce vomiting, leading to immediate resolution.
Another Prescription
Achyranthes Bidentatae Radix (Tuniuxi) crushed to extract juice and administered orally; vomiting phlegm leads to resolution.
Moxibustion/Fumigation Method
Crotonis Fructus Pulvis (Badou Mo, 1 liang), spread on coarse grass paper. Place Badou at one end, no Badou at the other end. Roll tightly into a cylinder, about two cun long. Ignite the end with Badou, then immediately blow it out. Have the patient hold the end without Badou in their mouth. Someone else gently blows towards the fire end, allowing smoke to penetrate into the throat. Immediately breaks pus and blood, providing relief.
Repeatedly Effective Prescription for Chan Feng and Bilateral Ru E.
Make a hole in an Elm tree. Cut the fingernails or toenails of the patient. If the lesion is on the left, cut nails from the left hand and foot; if on the right, cut nails from the right hand and foot. For bilateral Ru E, cut from both sides. Use a small amount of Sodium Chloride (Yan Shi), put it in a pot, stir-fry until processed, grind into powder, and blow into the affected area. Pat the back of the head/top of the head with your hand. If the Ru E is on the left, pat the left side; if on the right, pat the right side. For bilateral Ru E, pat both sides. It will rupture immediately, phlegm and blood will flow out, and recovery will occur.

Acupuncture Method (Chan Hou Feng Shui [Water-Throat Wind] where water and qi cannot pass leads to death. Pierce one needle at the neck, and it heals immediately. Pierce Shaoshang (LU11) acupoint. Located at the medial end of the thumb, approximately the width of a leek leaf from the nail, in the depression of the white flesh. Pierce both hands until blood flows; water and rice can then pass. This acupoint belongs to the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and directly connects to the throat. The acupuncture method uses a triangular willow-leaf shaped thin needle.)
