Chills and high fever, aversion to wind with spontaneous sweating, fullness and oppression in the chest and diaphragm, qi rushing upward, without dizziness or headache, and without stiffness of the neck. This is known as Jia Tan Syndrome (a syndrome complicated by phlegm). For those with heat, Xiong Su Yin (Cnidium and Perilla Decoction), Jin Fei Cao San (Golden Whorlwort Powder), or Chai Hu Ban Xia Tang (Bupleurum and Pinellia Decoction) may be used. For those without heat, Er Chen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) and Wen Dan Tang (Warm Gallbladder Decoction) are generally applicable, or Jia Wei Dao Tan Tang (Modified Phlegm-Resolving Decoction). If there is phlegm knotting in the chest, He Ding Dan (Crane Crown Pill) or Zhi Jie Er Chen Tang (Aurantii Fructus and Scutellariae Radix Modified Two-Cured Decoction) should be used. If there is dull headache due to phlegm rising, Gua Di San (Melon Seed Powder) should be administered to induce vomiting.
Jia Wei Er Chen Tang: Gan Cao (Licorice Root, 8 fen), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 1 qian), Fu Ling (Poria, 1 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1.5 qian), Nan Xing (Arisaematis Cum Bile), Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma). Used to resolve phlegm; take this prescription subsequently.
Gua Di San: Gua Di (Momordicae Fructus), Chi Xiao Dou (Vigna umbellata seeds) (each 5 qian). Grind into powder, mix with salt water for administration. After taking the medicine, lie down for a while. Endure the urge to vomit; after some time, use a finger to stimulate the throat to induce vomiting.
Additionally, there are cases of fever resembling the initial stage of Shang Han (Cold Damage), but without headache or body pain, without aversion to cold, and with a pulse that is not tight and rapid, but only floating and weak. One must be cautious not to attack the heat directly; otherwise, removing the heat will generate cold.
Ren Shen Zhu Ye Tang (Ginseng and Bamboo Leaf Decoction): Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 5 qian), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 2 qian), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, 7 fen), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, 1.5 qian), Dan Zhu Ye (Lophatheri Herba, 4 slices), Jing Mi (Oryza Sativa, one handful). Decoct in water, add two spoons of Jiang Zhi (Fresh Ginger Juice) before taking.
If there is Qi deficiency with extreme thirst, double the dosage of Ren Shen. If sweating is excessive, add Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) and Bei Mu (Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus). If diarrhea occurs, add Bai Zhu and Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma). If Yin deficiency causes night-time vexation, add Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), and Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba). If vomiting occurs, remove Shi Gao and add Chen Pi and Fu Ling.
Jia Jian Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Modified Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction): Due to labor-induced Shang Han, presenting with headache, fever, and aversion to cold, but with slight thirst and spontaneous sweating, and soreness and weakness in the body and legs. This is caused by internal injury to Qi and Blood combined with external contraction of Wind-Cold.
Prescription composition: Ren Shen, Huang Qi, Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Sheng Di Huang, Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Chen Pi, Gan Cao, Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Bai Zhu, Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus), Cong Bai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus). Decoct in water and take warm.
If Yuan Qi (Original Qi) is insufficient, add a small amount of Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma). If coughing occurs, add Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum). If sweating does not stop, remove Xi Xin and add Shao Yao. If there is vexation and heat in the chest, add Shan Zhi (Gardeniae Fructus) and Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia). If dry retching occurs, add Ban Xia stir-fried with Jiang Zhi. If there is fullness and oppression in the chest, remove Sheng Di Huang, Gan Cao, Huang Qi, and Bai Zhu; add Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus) and Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix). If phlegm is abundant, remove Fang Feng and Xi Xin; add Gua Lou Ren (Trichosanthis Semen) and Bei Mu. If abdominal pain occurs, remove Bai Zhu and add Shao Yao and Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma).
