Zhenjing Wan (Calming Fright Pill) calms fright and soothes the spirit, reduces fever, resolves phlegm, and stops coughing: Zhenzhu (Pearl, 1 qian), Hupo (Amber, 3 qian), Jinbo (Gold Leaf, 10 pieces), Danning (Arisaema Cum Bile, 5 qian), Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis, 2 qian), Shexiang (Musk, 5 fen), Tianzhuhuang (Bambusae Sabla, 3 qian each with Xionghuang (Realgar, 3 qian each), Chensha (Cinnabar, 3.5 qian). Grind the above into fine powder, make pills with ginger paste, size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take 6 pills per dose, administered with a decoction of Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) and honey-ginger water.
Da Tian Nanxing Wan (Large Arisaema Pill) treats Ji Jing (Acute Convulsion) and Man Jing (Chronic Convulsion), with symptoms such as tidal phlegm causing spasms, locked jaw, and deviation of mouth and eyes. Ingredients: Danning (Arisaema Cum Bile, 5 qian), Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma, 2.5 qian), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 2.5 qian), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 2.5 qian), Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis, 1 qian), Ruxiang (Olibanum, 1 qian), Zhusha (Cinnabar, 2 qian), Quanxie (Scorpio, 14 pieces), Shexiang (Musk, 1 qian), Naozhi (Borneol, 5 fen). Make pills with refined honey, size of Euryale seed. Administer with a decoction of Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica) and Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba).
For Ji Jing (Acute Convulsion) and Man Jing (Chronic Convulsion) presenting with fever, locked jaw, latent heat in palms and soles, phlegm-heat, phlegmatic cough, and phlegmatic wheezing, employ the vomiting method. For severe cases, use Gudi San (Melon Trichosanthes Powder); for mild cases, use powder of Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix) and Chixiaodou (Adzuki Bean), mixed with sour vinegar juice for administration. Subsequently, administer Tongsheng San (Universal Salvation Powder) as honey pills. Meanwhile, use Sang Niu (Silkworms on Mulberry Trees), dried in shade, ground into powder, and taken to pacify wind. Sang Niu is distinguished from Yang Niu by its yellowish-white color.
To treat pediatric fright with heat, decoct Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Baishaoyao (White Peony Root), Jiuchao Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma fried with wine), and Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens). In summer, add Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Sheng Gancao (Raw Licorice Root), and Zhuye (Bamboo Leaf). There is a folk remedy claiming to treat both types of fright; it must not be used recklessly. Fright has two syndromes: one is Ji Jing (Acute Convulsion) caused by Phlegm-Heat, which should be purged; the other is Man Jing (Chronic Convulsion) caused by Spleen Deficiency, which is often fatal and requires tonifying the Spleen. Ji Jing (Acute Convulsion) requires clearing fire, resolving phlegm, and nourishing blood; Man Jing (Chronic Convulsion) requires Zhusha Anshen Wan (Cinnabar Calming Spirit Pill), seeking efficacy within blood-nourishing herbs. Li Dongyuan stated: "Treat Man Jing (Chronic Convulsion) by first strengthening Spleen Earth, then dispersing Wind pathogens."
Heilong Wan (Black Dragon Pill) treats both Ji Jing (Acute Convulsion) and Man Jing (Chronic Convulsion): Danning (Arisaema Cum Bile, 1 liang), Mengshi (Lapis Malachitis, 1 liang), Chensha (Cinnabar, 3 qian), Lvhui (Aloe, 5 qian), Tianzhuhuang (Bambusae Sabla, 5 qian), Wugong (Centipede, 1.5 qian, calcined), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus, 5 qian), Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis, 5 qian). Mix with licorice paste to form pills the size of a chicken head. For Ji Jing (Acute Convulsion), dissolve in ginger-honey-bohe decoction; for Man Jing (Chronic Convulsion), dissolve in Jiegeng Baizhu Tang (Platycodon and Atractylodes Decoction).
If an infant under one month old suffers prenatal fright and shows signs of stroke, death is imminent. Apply thick Cinnabar paste dissolved in fresh water to the Five Shen points to test efficacy.
For convulsions, take one Scorpio (Quanxie) without wings and feet, wrap it in four leaves of Mentha (Bohe), roast over fire until leaves are charred, grind together into powder, divide into four doses, and administer with decoction. For adults with Wind-Phlegm, take one dose. For prenatal fright manifesting under one month, grind Cinnabar finely, add a small amount of Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang), dilute with pig milk, apply to the mouth; adding Musk (Shexiang) is excellent. For initial fright, use Fangfeng Daochi San (Saposhnikovia and Gardenia Decoction): equal parts of Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), and Gancao (Licorice Root). Use 3 qian, decoct with Bamboo Leaves.
Subsequently, use Ningshen Gao (Spirit-Calming Ointment): Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, 1 liang, heart removed), pure Shexiang (Musk, 1 qian), Fuling (Poria, 1 liang), Zhusha (Cinnabar, 1 liang). Grind into powder, make small cakes with refined honey. Dissolve one cake in Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) water before sleep, once nightly. Old physicians stated that pediatric convulsions are mostly Heat syndromes. If Jingfeng medicines like Bai Fu Zi (Typhonii Rhizoma), Quanxie (Scorpio), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), or Chuanwu (Aconiti Radix Preparata) are used immediately, it leads to complicated/deteriorated conditions. Later medical practitioners used Daochi San (Gardenia and Licorice Decoction) added with Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) and Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix). After three doses, Heart Fire pathogenic heat is guided out, and convulsions cease. Then administer Ningshen Gao (Spirit-Calming Ointment) for miraculous effect.
Dueming San (Life-Snatching Powder) for Ji Jing (Acute Convulsion) and Man Jing (Chronic Convulsion) is used when Phlegm-Tidal obstruction blocks the throat, life hanging by a thread. It is universally effective, miracles unspeakable. Prepare by placing 1 liang of Mengshi (Lapis Malachitis) in a crucible with 1 liang of Yan Xiao (Saltpeter), heating with charcoal until red hot, until saltpeter is exhausted. Cool, the medicine turns golden, grind into powder. For Ji Jing (Acute Convulsion) with Phlegm-Heat, mix with Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) and natural juice; for Man Jing (Chronic Convulsion) due to Spleen Deficiency, mix with Qingzhou Bai Wanzi (Qingzhou White Pills) decocted into thin paste, sweetened with honey.
For Ji Jing (Acute Convulsion) and Man Jing (Chronic Convulsion) patients near death, moxibustion can be taught. For males, left hand; for females, right hand. Moxa burn three cones at the point halfway between flesh and nail on the thumb, size of a chopstick head. Subsequently, use: Chensha (Cinnabar), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Qingfen (Calomelas, half qian each), Quanxie (Scorpio, one, wingless), Badou (Crotonis Fructus, one, oil removed). Grind into powder. Take half a zi (approx. 0.5g) per dose, mixed with rice cake crumb decoction. If the jaw is locked, pry open and pour in. Recovery occurs upon expulsion of phlegm-saliva and abdominal diarrhea.
If slow convulsion follows vomiting and diarrhea, with lethargy and limb spasms, mix 5 qian of Jin Ye Dan (Golden Liquid Pill) and 3 qian of Qingzhou Bai Wanzi (Qingzhou White Pills), grind into powder, and take 3 fen with ginger-rice drink. For convulsions, mother and child may both take Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) combined with Er Chen Tang (Two Aged Things Decoction), plus Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), and Quanxie (Scorpio).
Riyue Dan (Sun and Moon Pill) for pediatric Ji Jing (Acute Convulsion) and Man Jing (Chronic Convulsion): Zhusha (Cinnabar, 1 liang), Qingfen (Calomelas, 1 liang), Wugong (Centipede, one). Grind into powder, make pills with insects found inside Qinghao nodes (Artemisiae Annuae Caulis), size of millet seeds. One pill per year of age, taken with milk.
For pediatric Ji Jing (Acute Convulsion) and Man Jing (Chronic Convulsion) with excessive Phlegm-Heat and fever: Beibohe (Northern Mint Leaf, 1 liang), Hanshuishi (Stalactitum, 1 liang), Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis, 1 qian), Bai Jiangcan (White Bombyx Batryticatus, 1 qian), Chensha (Cinnabar, 1 qian), Quanxie (Scorpio, two, stir-fried), Zhu Ya Zao Jiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus, 5 fen, stir-fried), Huai Jiao (Sophorae Tonkinensis Fructus, 5 fen), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix tip, half qian). Grind into powder, mix with Dengxin Tang (Junci Medullae Decoction) and milk for administration.
For opisthotonos and fixed gaze caused by fright, administer Nanxing (Arisaema Cum Bile), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Zhuli (Bambusa Sap), and Jiangzhi (Zingiberis Juice). Moxibustion at Yintang (Ex-HN3).
For Ji Jing (Acute Convulsion) and Man Jing (Chronic Convulsion) leading to near-death state, chew one Mudingxiang (Eugeniae Caryophyllata Flos) thoroughly, scrape some Renzhongbai (Human Tooth Ash), mix with blood from the mother's middle finger, and rub on teeth to revive. Another prescription: apply blood from a white male black-bone chicken to the lips for immediate revival.
